Songs to drink scotch and smoke cigarettes with

Dead Flower

Recommended Posts

I'm tryin' to put together a cool mix cd. Lookin' for mellow songs by dudes that have proper cigarette voices.

Examples of what I'm after...

One Hundred Days - Mark Lanegan

Are You The One I've Been Waiting For - Nick Cave

Idiot Prayer - Nick Cave

Shore Leave - Tom Waits

Downtown Train - Tom Waits

All Misery Flowers - Gutter Twins

I'm thinking some Leonard Cohen would be good, but I know nothing of his work. Suggestions would be welcome.

Here are my favourite Cohen songs. Don't know if they are what you're really looking for though. Still going through his catalog, so there may be better choices than these. But in any case they are pretty damn incredible songs.

Waits is on my list. Recommend me a good album of his to check out first. I don't know any of his songs.

I don't think he has the voice you want but what about Billy Joel? He has so many songs that evoke a smoke filled bar.

Follow You Down, The Killer - Twilight Singers

Everyone, Glad Tidings - Van Morrison

The Future, Anthem, Everybody Knows, I'm Your Man, Suzanne, Waiting for the Miracle etc - Leonard Cohen

Pale Blue Eyes, I Found a Reason, Sweet Jane etc - Velvet Underground

Rod Stewart all the way.

He said songs to drink scotch and smoke cigarettes with, not drink scotch and smoke cock with.

Read again?

I belive Rod Stewart has a cigarette voice and has produced many mellow tunes.

I like this song. Cheers.

If you want to do yourself a big favor just get Leonard Cohen's 2009 live album Live In London, recorded during his 2008 performence at the O2 Arena.

Give that a spin. You'll absolutely love this.

That is a brilliant recommendation, one of my favourite live records released this year.
