Death of the video rental store!

Recommended Posts

I've just spent the last week or so staying with my parents in my home town over the holidays and got all dewy eyed yesterday noticing that local Blockbuster has closed down meaning that there's now no more video rental stores anywhere in the area. I mean I know that might sound daft to anybody under 30 on here but I actually miss the days before everything was only a click of a mouse away and I'd make a night of it going down to pick up a couple of VHS tapes with some nibbles and the like.

Used to fucking love it when I was younger back in the 80's going to some of the local independant stores with all the shit straight to video b movies. Before the internet was about it was total pot luck and all the more fun because of it. All you'd know about a movie until you got it home was what the back of the box said and whatever you could glean from the (usually terrible) artwork on the front. As great as Netfilx and all that are I think having access to anything you want at your fingertips takes a lot of the fun out of it. :(

Dunno why I'm ranting about something as innane as this but I'm hungover and having a bit of a nostalgia attack. Anybody else miss the days of VHS vs Betamax or am I just a dozy old whinging fart?

Not at all, in the early 90s as a kid I loved going to the library with my parents and renting a few videos to watch that weekend. Now I hardly watch anything as I know it is only a click away so can watch it whenever and never really do.

My dad's buddy used to own a couple of smaller rental stores back home when I was little and this was before anybody really got all arsey about age restrictions and the like. The guy used to call my house to ask my parents if it was okay to let their dear little 8 year old rent A Nightmare on Elm Street 4 or Exorcist 3.

Yeah that's exactly my point as well as the fact that with google and the like you can find out everything about a movie online at the click of a mouse before you've watched a second of it. Back then I used to watch a fuck tonne of films all the time but now with unlimited access to as many films and TV shows as I could ever wish for I very rarely take the time to sit down for a couple of hours and watch anything.

Fuck that, i'm glad it's more convenient, whats great about having to go out in the freezing cold and budget your tenner over what movies u prioritize when you can just download the whole fucking lot for gratis now  Fuck the video rental store, thats my feeling, £3.50 to have a film overnight, bollocks to that.

And yes, you are a whingeing old fart  And you smell too. And you're fat

I agree with Dazey, it is kinda sad. I remember me and my friends used to giggle at the porn section, man those boxes looked really 'handled'.

The only thing I don't miss is having to return the fucking thing next day. God knows how many fines I would get for that. Sometimes I'd just change video stores to avoid the fine.

Get fucked you curry munching cock botherer! I liked all that shit cuz it added to the fun of it all and you actually had to go out of the house rather than wallowing in your own filth you 'orrible cunt! Used to love a trip out to the video shop to pick up two or three movies to watch over a weekend. Grab some pop and a takeaway and make a night of it. Also actually browsing up and down shelves of new and old releases was just much nicer than typing something into a search engine. Like how I much prefer browsing in a record shop to hitting a download link.

You enjoyed a trip down to the videostore when you were 8 because at 8 yrs old even a trip down ASDA was a laugh for ya, that don't mean the same translates into this day and age when you're 30 something. What you miss is being 8, not the videostore.

No i'm just realistic and I have an accurate memory of life that doesn't like, blag me into thinking something was something it wasn't just because some time has elapsed  Santa and the Tooth Fairy and just historical figures, their existence is indisputable!

Considering the amount of gear you've done over the years that is highly questionable

Our local one shut down recently too. I'm more bummed about our HMV's closing down though. They had everything, and it would have been good this year for Christmas shopping . If I wanted to buy a CD I wouldn't know where to go now, obviously online has everything, but nothing beats looking through and having a good rummage. Everything is slowly moving to digital. I wouldn't be surprised if in 5 years Blu Ray will be phased out.

I just think there's something totally soulless about all this digital mullarky. I mean it's convenient and all but it's got no obvious value to me. These days I'll come home from work and the missus and I will sit down to watch a show or a movie and we'll still be sitting there two hours later trying to choose something.

No i just think a better way of going about expieriencing joy is in the moment, harking back to the past ain't joyful, it's depressing and wistful and a headfuck. Like the idea of reaching for the unobtainable, if the bastards unobtainable, who gives a shit? Oh the 90s, the 90s, do you remember the 90s?!?! It was shit, i was skint, i had to get the bus to school and wear a bottle green uniform, I had to wait outside cornershops asking builders and housewives to buy my fags for me and i couldn't get a fuckin' drink, the 90s was shite.

These anecdotes you remember, 'that time when me and our kid did this this and this', however plentiful they are, are not the bulk of what even you were doing in the 90s I'm sure. I'm not trying to depress you young lad I'm just saying, compared to now, the past ain't shit, can you remember your fuckin' past properly, growing up in a fuckin' council gaff...look at you now, you got a proper good job, making good money, you got a crackin' bird...and you're harking back to thursday nights crackin' one out over a copy of Razzle and going down the video shop to get Ghostbusters out with ya mum?

I never rented one more than once, i wanted to see as MANY AS POSSIBLE!!! I'm obssessive like that. If i wanted em to watch more than once i'd take it to the nice lady 4 doors down who had two vcrs hooked up together so you could copy em. Picture came out a little less than perfect but it was watchable :)

I thought what with you being an Arsenal fan you would want to hark back to the days where you actually won trophies.

I had a Betamax rigged up in me gran's dining room to do that. Used to make much better copies that I could get a fiver a pop at school for.

If anything, I feel it's making the film industry less capitalistic. Films are becoming less about the product and more about its artistic merit.

Instead of buying a film and deciding if it's good; you now have the option of watching it online before you make any decision to buy.
