Richard Black/Shark Island interview

First off that Video with Axl and Tracii was from April 26th 1986 and I shot it. The reason I was there is because I knew Axl was going to be going up on stage with them and I was filming everything Axl did because I knew it was important to have it. Since I was there I shot the whole show. I gave Axl a copy of it and thats why it ended up in Axl's apartment. Axl had plenty of moves before he had even heard of Shark Island. Axl liked Richard and thought the band was very professional because they used to play 200 gigs a year. The Snake move was something that Richard did do and Axl must have been a bit influenced by it and picked up on it and at some point worked it in with all his other moves. It doesn't mean that Axl ripped him off. Lots of Rock Stars get influenced by something they see and use it somehow. Mick Jagger got a lot of them from Tina Turner. Axl is very natural and is mostly one of a kind in everything he does but I'm sure some of what he does came from something he saw somewhere and just starting doing something like it because it felt right. Joe Perry took a lot from Jeff Beck, Slash took a lot from Joe Perry that's Rock N' Roll and there are kids out there that took something from Slash. No big deal.

The only difference here is Richard never made it so no one really knew who he was. I think he is just jealous that Axl and GNR made it all the way to the top and he got left behind. Infact I think I remember reading somewhere where Axl talked about Richard and said nice things about him when the GNR first started doing well maybe 1988 or so. No way did AXl ripped him off or stock him.

Lol i always thought that Shark Island was a venue...

It's interesting that he cllaims Axl plagiarised his stage antics, but the end of the day, this band can't even manage to get more famous, while Axl and GNR was at one point is one of the biggest bands of this world... because they've got actualy talent, lol
So how come Axl didn't do anyíthing original in his life? give me a break... this dude is a bitter 80's glam metal musician
and was forgotten as fuck

So go figure

Interesting interview. I wasn't around for the 80s rock scene, but it looks like it was such an incredible time, something truly amazing to have seen and lived through.

As for Shark Island, from what I've heard of their music, I think the reason they never took off is because the music really is nothing special. It's not like they would've become world huge legendary if GNR never happened. Good music is good music, and it will always find an audience.

That being said, I'm putting their music on my iPhone right now and will give it a thorough listen! And it's via spotify, so if you're reading this morning Mister Shark Island, don't worrying you're getting paid.

Cool. Thanks for clearing that up Marc...

No matter what moves that guy had, as soon as he started singing nothing could save him.

Axl on the other hand could stand still onstage and still would be one of the greatest singers and voices we ever had the pleasure to hear on this world.
