This upcoming tour

I 've carefully listened to all the rumours and found...could this tour be sort of like UYI tour leg with Izzy in '91? I mean like the first tour date is on 5.27, in 1991 it was 5.24 (If you exclude the warm up gigs...but which makes me think could they maybe throw some warm up gigs somewhere as well?). UYI albums together contain 30 songs....CD has been rumoured to have about 30+ if it does get released in a 3 Disc set.

Axl made his ballads then, and he specialises in them today. Gn'R back then in '91 did about 3 odd months of touring to surprise fans with new songs before releasing the albums...could they be doing that again this year? They also first showed up in '91 at Rock In Rio (however that was not part of the UYI tour but nonetheless the first concert after the last show which was in i think late '89....not quite sure as I am a UYI era fan not AFD)...this time 'round it 's starting from Rock In Rio. On a note these are not questions expected to be answered if anyone is thinking so, just wonderings and a comparison to '91.

Its funny you mention this, I went during the UYI tour about a month before the CD came out. I didn't have a clue what they were singing other than You Could Be Mine. I don't really think its the best way to tour, it really does leave the fans a little lost. But your point does make a lot of sence!

I think it's cool that they do things this way, something new to expect from the tour. And i think its kinda nice that they do it differently than other artists in nowdays. As for the negative side of it, you don't get so much from the show when you dont know the song but everything has its two sides......

HE did try to do that in 2001/2002. but using he same old setlist over and over at each concert. IF Axl wants to do the same thing now. He NEEDS to diversify the setlist with new material and UYI as well; (im talking about Dont Cry, Dont Damn me, The garden, garden of eden, yesterdays, locomotive...) :krider:

Don't Cry was retired to do with shannon hoon, i don't think it'll be played again, plus i don't think his voice could handle yesterdays anymore...

Don`t Cry didn`t make it to the setlist because of Shannon Hoon..I honestly belive so.

Shannon were in the studio recording that song and in the video,so after losing a close friend i can understand why Axl doesn`t do that song anymore..

If Axl starts doing Don`t Cry live again i think he will dedicate it to Shannon.

i understand, i love blind melon and i see why Axl wouldnt sing it no more. but in any case axl wrote this song way before he recorded with Shanoon right?

Yeah, but when it was layed down as a studio track for illusions shannon hoon added his vocals, plus he was in the video so it won't be played anymore, surf about and you should find the statement that axl said it in...

Unrealistic right here.

'Don't Damn Me' was never played once with the old band and other than 'Yesterdays', the others you listed each only got a handful of plays live.

Setting yourself up for disapointment if this is what you are looking for now.

Those songs won't be played, I would love to hear Perfect Crime of Double talkin Jive but I know only huge hits/ covers from Illusions will be on there. There will be less from AFD replaced by more from CD this time around maybe a little longer show who knows.

even though axl's got his "new" line up, i sure hope he plays some songs from the past, like:

Welcome To The Jungle

Nightrain (i actually think the new line-up plays this song better then the original....)

Paradise City

Sweet Child O' Mine

Rocket Queen

Patience

Don't Cry (though i understand why axl wont play it)

November Rain

Coma (can't see this song being played though)

Civil War (I heard a rumour that the new line-up actually sound checked with this song back in like '01 for one of their gigs, is that true?)

Knockin' On Heaven's Door

Estranged

They did play Civil War in HOB as a warmup. I'm glad they don't play it. The band sounded alright but Axl sounded horrible.

I always thought that the reason for not playing Don't Cry in 2002 was because GNR was sued in 98 or 99 over that song. I never heard what the outcome was (some Spanish dude claims they ripped off the chord progression, supposedly the songs sound very similar, but Don't Cry was the very first song GNR ever wrote so I doubt it's likely that GNR living in a one bedroom apartment together was listening to South American music, anyway). Perhaps there's legal/royalty reasons as to why they didn't play Don't Cry because yes, Don't Cry was around way before Shannon Hoon.

It was very strange that Axl didn't play "Yesterdays" in the last tour seeing how the lyrics seem to resonate well with where the band sits now ("Cause yesterday's got nothing for me, old pictures that I've always seen" and so on). Seemed to fit with what the band was saying, but hey, that's just me....

BTW, Yesterdays isn't that difficult to sing when you think of some of the songs that were performed in the last tour. As a vocalist, I think I could sing Yesterdays four or five times for every time I sang You Could Be Mine. In Yesterdays, the range spikes here and there and there's several vocal breaks to recoup, but You Could Be Mine never lets go, especially when you factor in the second bridge that requires some titanium vocal chords. There's a reason why Coma was only played once or twice; it's damn near impossible to pull off this song without wrecking your vocal chords. The outro melody is sustained for what feels like forever. (I think at one stop on the Illusion tours Slash and Duff started to play the into Coma and Axl shut it down saying, "If you want to play that, you're singin' it." With the exception of the last chorus to Yesterdays, it's not that taxing on the vocal chords.

As for setlists for this time around, I just finished posting in a different thread that we'll see tour very similar to the 2002 tour. I think this really is a warm-up to the albums release later this year. Remember, with exception to a few dates, European fans never got the 2002 tour that was heavy with AFD numbers.

Also, the 2002 was never suppose to be about showing off the material like previously posted. Axl mentioned at RIR3 that he wanted a tour to play a lot of those songs one last time. As he mentioned, he didn't want to deny the fans of something he thought they wanted to hear. Whether he was correct or not, who's to say (I think a lot of people showed up for the SCOM and WTTJs anyway).

With this new tour, I expect another AFD heavy setlist, with some of the fat removed. I'd be surprised if we heard both Live and Let Die AND Knockin' On Heaven's Door. Also, I'd be very surprised to hear songs like Think About You, Out Ta Get Me, Rocket Queen and so on. Expect those songs to be replaced by songs like Better, TWAT, IRS, CITR.

Cheers,

Andrew

Axl did not want to tour before UYI were out. He had no choice the album was not completed but the tour was booked and they would have lost a ton of cash if they pulled out so they went ahead. Having said that i don't consider the european dates a GNR tour. Its is a lot of festivals that would be there for the most part whether GNR showed up or not. I would think of these appearances as the warm up gigs and to get the media talking again. They should release the album while they are doing these gigs....late June early July. They would have had positive reports from the road and had time to work all the kinks out of their live performances and be primed for a real tour mid august through oct. in North America. By then the first single is in heavy rotation and the album has been out long enough for people to buy and sing along at the shows.

I would really like that. Hearing some new stuff for the first time and on a concert.
