Very cool read - thanks dude!  Sad to read that Izzy and Axl were in awe and thinking this is how amazing Guns N’ Roses could be in ten years time... or not.

And a bit harsh that the newspaper states that the Stones are geriatric when they were only in the late 40’s !

i must be geriatric too 🤪

There was a lot of that talk amongst the press, disc jockeys kind of making fun of them for being so OLD!!  Little did they know the Stones would still be here 30 years later.

  2. I hate to say it, but I'm afraid one of these days we'll find out Eddie has died.  Hope I'm wrong!  And I've been wrong in the past about Ed's health.  He got tounge cancer in 2000 or 2001.  But recovered, and is still alive 19 years later.  So who knows.  But I fear the worst.  Cancer is a bitch.  I'm sure all of us know friends and family members who have died from it.

  3. Bay City Rollers, The Monkeeys.   Just kidding, even though I like both.  Anyway, its fun to wonder who should be in.  But its not really up to us fans.  Besides, they will always put in some unknown singer from long ago.  Someone we've never heard of.  And bands that should be in will have to wait til next year.

It certainly was not happenstance, Axl was a prima donna.  That's not unusual, most great frontmen are.  But Lars summed it up perfectly, if things weren't perfect Axl couldn't or didn't want to deal with it.

Agreed!  You got 53,000 paying customers wanting to see a show with 2 huge bands and an opening act(Faith No More?). Metallica had to leave mid-set.  2-3 hours later Gn'R comes on and leaves after 45 minutes or so.  OK, the monitors weren't working right, but you gotta play thru it.  Give the fans their moneys worth.  Don't leave!

And I was there, it was something that I'll certainly never forget.  You could just sense something was brewing that night.  The heat, the free flowing booze, it was inevitable in a way.  I was really far back from the stage and was confused about what was happening.  But when Axl got back on stage and made his infamous "lame ass" comment, it became clear.  Everything was cool initially but once people realized that the band wasn't coming back it got ugly quickly.  Mob mentality took over and the feeding frenzy was on.  Luckily, I was far enough away that I could watch the insanity unfold.  I did not take part in any of the destruction that occurred.  A guy came on the PA and said the band would come back but it was way too late for that, it was already a free for all.  It was funny actually, he was on mic saying "hey man, stop throwing that shit" before he ran for his life.  The helicopter scene in the "Don't Cry" vid was accurate, they were everywhere. It was like World War 3 had broken out in the suburbs of St. Louis.  It really was a miracle that no one was killed.  My friend and I made it out in one piece and escaped back to the safety and refuge of the hotel bar.

I was there as well.  One thing that is never mentioned is when Axl threw down the mic., there was a LOUD feedback/buzz sound that went on for about 3 to 5 seconds.  Very loud.  That was an indication to the majority of the crowd that something was wrong. Not long after that, the house lights came on, and the piped in music started playing, a clear sign that the show was over.  The crowd got pissed right away.

Oh well, Axl came back and played in St.Louis in 2017, now the riot is just a footnote in GnR history.

  6. RIP Mr. Conway.  He was a funny guy!  Check out a couple of movies he did with Don Knotts in the 1980's.  The Prize Fighter and Private Eyes.  (Going by memory here on the names of the movies).

Yep, I was at the Arrowhead show also.  Hetfield was still not playing the guitar due to his pyro accident.  Do you remember Axl having a camera on his cap saying they were filming a vid?

I sure do.  They opened with "Jungle".  Which was a surprise for me at least.  Figured they'd play that later in the set.  And the inflatable stuff was not on the sides of the stage, it was in the upper sections of the stadium behind the stage.

  8. Axl was trying to get the naming rights to GnR.  He felt that things might be falling apart.  They got rid of Steven Adler, and Izzy got arrested for peeing in the kitchen of the plane , a felony.  By 91, Axl wanted the naming rights so if it all fell apart, GnR would continue with or without Slash,Duff etc..  So he used the crowd as leverage.  The rest of the band was there, but he showed up whenever he wanted.  And they had 2 riots and a few close calls.  Finally Slash and Duff signed it over and Axl was cool again.  But Slash in this interview was just trying to justify it, He didn't want to make things worse.  Axl's excuses about having to get his ankles taped and vocal warmups was just an excuse.  He knew what time the show was supposed to start.  Besides, the Lakers might have been playing!
