  1. One thing about today's music that I don't like, even with most of the underground unsigned bands that are otherwise great.... is the singing. I haven't been able to find anybody that is at all unique or interesting with their voice. Most of it is rather annoying singing, and it can ruin a whole band for me.

That's something that was great about the popular and even not-so-popular bands of old... every band had a singer with a distinctive voice.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

listen to Capleton, Sizzla, that song Dont Blame I...can't remember who did it but its a lee perry song...they got orignal type voices

  2. The message (Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five)

    Broken glass everywhere

People pissing on the stairs, you know they just

    Don’t care

I can’t take the smell, I can’t take the noise

Got no money to move out, I guess I got no choice

Rats in the front room, roaches in the back

Junkie’s in the alley with a baseball bat

I tried to get away, but I couldn’t get far

Cause the man with the tow-truck repossessed my car

    Chorus:

Don’t push me, cause I’m close to the edge

I’m trying not to loose my head

It’s like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder

How I keep from going under

Standing on the front stoop, hangin’ out the window

Watching all the cars go by, roaring as the breezes

    Blow

Crazy lady, livin’ in a bag

Eating out of garbage piles, used to be a fag-hag

Search and test a tango, skips the life and then go

To search a prince to see the last of senses

Down at the peepshow, watching all the creeps

So she can tell the stories to the girls back home

She went to the city and got so so so ditty

She had to get a pimp, she couldn’t make it on her

    Own

    Chorus:

It’s like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder

How I keep from goin’ under

My brother’s doing fast on my mother’s t.v.

Says she watches to much, is just not healthy

All my children in the daytime, dallas at night

Can’t even see the game or the sugar ray fight

Bill collectors they ring my phone

And scare my wife when I’m not home

Got a bum education, double-digit inflation

Can’t take the train to the job, there’s a strike

    At the station

Me on king kong standin’ on my back

Can’t stop to turn around, broke my sacroiliac

    Midrange, migraine, cancered membrane

Sometimes I think I’m going insane, I swear I might

    Hijack a plane!

    Chorus:

My son said daddy I don’t wanna go to school

Cause the teacher’s a jerk, he must think I’m a

    Fool

And all the kids smoke reefer, I think it’d be

    Cheaper

If I just got a job, learned to be a street sweeper

I dance to the beat, shuffle my feet

Wear a shirt and tie and run with the creeps

Cause it’s all about money, ain’t a damn thing

    Funny

You got to have a con in this land of milk and

    Honey

They push that girl in front of a train

Took her to a doctor, sowed the arm on again

Stabbed that man, right in his heart

Gave him a transplant before a brand new start

I can’t walk through the park, cause it’s crazy

    After the dark

Keep my hand on the gun, cause they got me on the

    Run

I feel like an outlaw, broke my last fast jaw

Hear them say you want some more, livin’ on a

    Seesaw

    Chorus:

A child was born, with no state of mind

Blind to the ways of mankind

God is smiling on you but he’s frowning too

Cause only God knows what you go through

You grow in the ghetto, living second rate

And your eyes will sing a song of deep hate

The places you play and where you stay

Looks like one great big alley way

You’ll admire all the number book takers

Thugs, pimps, pushers and the big money makers

Driving big cars, spending twenties and tens

And you wanna grow up to be just like them

    Smugglers, scrambles, burglars, gamblers

    Pickpockets, peddlers and even pan-handlers

You say I’m cool, I’m no fool

But then you wind up dropping out of high school

Now you’re unemployed, all null ’n’ void

Walking around like you’re pretty boy floyd

Turned stickup kid, look what you done did

Got send up for a eight year bid

Now your man is took and you’re a may tag

Spend the next two years as an undercover fag

Being used and abused, and served like hell

Till one day you was find hung dead in a cell

It was plain to see that your life was lost

You was cold and your body swung back and forth

But now your eyes sing the sad sad song

Of how you lived so fast and died so young

    there ya go person-who-likes-changes.

u think its a crock of shite? how comes peg?

and luvaxlforever...how much hip hop do u actually know of that makes u qualified to pass judgement on MOST of it? and ur a guns n roses fan, talking about videos being ridiculous? most videos are ridiculous if u watch em...

  3. Im not a fan of hip hop, but if you want an example of hip hop thats not the norm then checkout Changes by Tupac. Examples of the good things from hip hop and rap can be found in the lyrics of Tupacs songs

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

actually, theres like....a TON of stuff in that changes vein if u look into hip hop...in fact, theres been an overabundance of that since Tupac did it

  4. Mainstream Hip Hop (the stuff most of you are talking about)  = garbage

    Underground Hip Hop = amazing

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

the underground shit is good, it's great...that whole sage francis angle...what kinda, makes me wonder though, about a lotta underground scenes, is this weird kinda, snobby mentality where it's like, if u sign with a major ur a sellout...it seems to me that if u got somethin u think needs hearing you'll want as many people to hear it as possible...thats how u make a difference...a lotta underground folks really need to straighten out their thinking caps. to my mind, it's just that childish thing where u seperate urself cuz somehow u think ur different in a way no one else is

  5. I don't like hip-hop

    reasons:

I personally think its sounds shit, also i don't respect the artists as alot of them do not write their own material.  Although i do acknowledge that the professional people that DO write the songs behind the scenes ARE talented.  Also i find Hip-Hop sexist, all those film clips, very deorgritory to women.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

sexist is actually a really good point...u got long live rock n roll down there, and rock n roll is sexist as fuck, but thats not to excuse hip hop. a lot of them don't write their own matierial? where'd u come by that? *not agreeing of disagreeing, just asking*

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I got the "Long Live Rock N' Roll" from the Rainbow song of the same name, and Rainbow are not a sexist band. Yes i admit there have been alot of rock bands that have songs that are sexist, but it seems that EVERY Hip-Hop film clip is the same thing.

My brother-in-law is loosely tied to the pop-industry, he does accounting for certain people in that industry etc, and he eventualy wants to get into producing. He knows people who are Professional song writers for pop and hip-hop artists, some might even be writing songs for up to 6 artists, now thats talent. It is much more common in the rock genre to find artists who right their own music.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

i agree to a point...except when u say its MUCH more common, i don't think it is much more common...sexism i think is a societal problem so it crops up everywhere in all art...but see a lot of hip hops sexism has a line of reason behind it to serve as justification (whether u agree or not is up to you but they give reasons) where rock doesn't a lot of the time. but yeah, songwriters, unsung heroes, my man elvis never wrote a song in his life (still love the dude)...Indian movies have like, songs in em, and i heard somewhere that a different guy sings em a different guy writes the music a different guy writes the lyrics and a different guy *star of the movie* lip-synchs the shit...thats an interesting dynamic cuz the west doesn't have that, we're all hung up on ownership and authenticity as opposed to disgregarding such quibbles in the name of decent music.

  7. interested to see peoples opinions here, cuz seems to be a lotta hip hop-o-phobia, just wondered as to the reasons behind it and those that like it too, why you guys think theres so much dislike for it out there...

  8. its dismissive of music to answer that question...no one heard ALL the music nowadays to be able to tell, and stuff in the charts is always crap anyway. theres a lot more music out there than what mainstream

  9. Gene Simmons.

I was watching a KISS DVD, and they had a couple interviews, and I'm like woah...that guy is RETARDED. I actually think their all retarded, but gotta love the music :P

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

u know how they came to being? they saw a new york dolls gig and said "we'll never be as pretty as that" hence the brainwave of instead of tarting themselves up, to look like monsters. personally i think they're dreadful but thats just my opinion

  10. So your saying that any music that is Honest and Passionate is punk? Sorry but i can't agree there. Punk in a musical sence has always come across to me as fake and as golddiggers. Where as Blues artists such as BB King and Stevie Ray Vaughan are extremely passionate musicains and honest men. They are defantly not Punk, they are bluesmen. I my self think for myself, have free ideas, im non comfortist, does that make me punk? no certainly not.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

not is punk, but can be called punk...can be aligned to a punk mentality...see, its been around since forever...it just took a while to give it a name...its really, um, it works outside of music genre, its more like an attitude relating to how you approach art. to quote Don Letts/Glen Matlock:

"the sex pistols didn't start punk, its been around forever, iggy had it, MC5 had it, the kinks had it, the doors had it, dali had it, right the way back to Mozart"

now thats not to say they spiked their hair and played 3 fast chords with a barked chorus...it means they had a free spirited renegade mentality towards their art. it really has so extremely little to do with music relative to its infinite connotations. its a way of thinking, its not to say ur a punk. i mean, hippies had it to begin with, when the whole thing was serious and it was protest music, until it became the shambles it ended up as complete with manson family stereotypes. reggae had it, the experimental dub music mentality. its more something relating to passion and freedom, it doesn't make u a punk because u r what u choose to be but if u r those things then it's easy to plonk that label on urself, personally i think its um...kinda contradictory to the whole philosophy to have labels but all it really amounts to is just a convininent definition. and i think you'll find if u look further back in the history of blues, theres a lot more honesty than that coming from stevie ray vaughn i.e. leadbelly, big bill broonzy, charley patton etc.

punk music as a genre, when defined is basically exactly the same as rock n roll.....and all that means is the label givers misunderstood the intentions of the people who made the "movement". rock n roll was just a good launch pad...its a music thing, period.

  11. I don't even like the Sex Pistols much and even I think "Never Mind The BOLLOCKS" is awesome.

But you have that already so oh well.........

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

thats cuz u have ears...sex pistols r the greatest band ever.

  12. there is a difference between a dress code and lifestyle...BIG difference, punk = lifestyle, metal = dress code...people seem to be trippin' up on this...explain a metal lifestyle/mentality that goes somewhere beyond "rockin' out".

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Ah yes but thats the beauty of Metal, anyone can listern to it and not be a metalhead. As you claim Punk is a lifestyle and therefore only real punks who live the lifestyle can listern to punk music. Metal is to be enjoyed and loved by everyone and anyone, they dont have to confine themselves to a specific lifestyle. Saying what your saying, Punk excludes everyone who doesnt follow that peticular lifestyle, Metal on the otherhand is much more inclusive not exclusive like Punk.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

but punk is a lifestyle predicated on personal freedom, which is an extremely large criteria. in fact, it's pretty much infinite relative to usual guidelines...the only guideline is that there are no guidelines, honesty and passion are the guidelines, which is a matter of interpretation...befitting a punk lifestyle u could be an Ace of Base fan...if u deemed that they fit that honesty and passion criteria.

    best solo? uh

Gallons Of Rubbing Alcohol Flows Thru The Strip - Nirvana

  15. i don't like metallica at all, their music, what they stand for, their attitudes, nothing. i think its like, possibly some of the most middle of the road trundle along not change for 20 years type bullsh it...and please, if ur gonna start on the "each album is groundbreaking within the bounds of the metal genre" stuff, then spare me cuz believe me, i have this conversation at work everyday..

  16. there is a difference between a dress code and lifestyle...BIG difference, punk = lifestyle, metal = dress code...people seem to be trippin' up on this...explain a metal lifestyle/mentality that goes somewhere beyond "rockin' out".

  17. wasted...ur one of few truly alive people on this forum...im fucking glad u exist...nice to see someone with an opinion they didn't read off the back of a cornflakes packet...i disagree on some of the shit u say but...i get where ur comin from and some of the stuff u go into is like a matter of, well could be right, might not...basically rock n roll is an amalgam of the black blues sound born in the bayous and backwoods and white folk music orignally bought over from europe...the rhythm and blues basically

  18. "obviously you are deaf"

uh, do u have to be insulting? i mean, d'ya think its smart? d'ya think its somethin i'm incapable of? if u wanna discuss, discuss...

"Metal defantly does not all sound the same, geez its vastly different. Using different scales and timings greatly change the sound of a song. Most metal artists know theory music, so they can actully right REAL music unlike Punk artists who come up with some boring crap"

where did i say metal all sounds the same? read my post dude...using different scales and timing does greatly change the sound of a song yes, but not drastically, relatively speaking, relative to a change in format...meaning using different instruments...how different can u be with the same instruments? its a boundary which encapsulates the music...u can hear a song and say, yeah, thats metal, but with punk, theres no definitive sound...a punk song can sound like anything, it is free and beyond bounds.

"Punk has come and gone, it was a fad, and now no one remebers it, Metal is alive and healthy and has been around alot longer than Punk. That tells you which is more diverse"

punk is a stance of adventure, discovery, attitude and pioneering, these things r timeless, but within the framework of the movement, well u can't compare, heavy metal was a genre, out & out...not a movement and hence metal can get away with immense unpopularity thru its chronology because its considered a genre and not a movement...movements r judged harsher because there is a undercurrent of revolt suggested in its title. there are more now, in the mainstream and outside of, that claim punk or punk influence....the same cannot be said (on the same scale) for metal. and being alive and healthy as a genre does not suggest diversity...explain that comment to me please because it makes no sense.

"As for you saying Metal is unorginal, well buddy it is THE most original style of music ever. There were no bands like Black Sabbath before them, they started from no where. Punk is an ugly child of metal that happened to be aborted a few years after its conception"

most orignal ever?!?!?! LOL turn rock n roll up, thats metal lol how is that orignal? how is it more orignal than free-form jazz or post-punk? explain that to me lol an ugly child of metal? lol no, i think not...how'd u work that out? their influences r cited as the stooges (rock n roll) MC5 (rock n roll) & The Velvet Underground (avante garde) how'd u figure metal into that equation?

"Metal is unique, is has grown into a massive force that it is now, it has had huge influence. There are more bands no days that use distortion than bands than play clean. Punk bands used distortion, defantly a Metal influence. Metal changed the entire face of music, music has never been the same"

ok, distortion and feedback, the beatles were doin that before metal was an itch in its daddys pants, so don't cite metal....and distortion did/does not change the entire face of music, it seems to be the only thing u cite in that paragraph...and i think music never being the same is something punk did, not metal.

listen to those bands i cited...THAT is orignal, u can't say no one sounded like sabbath...by their own admission they started off as just a rock n roll band.
