  1. Fantastic show and marvellous finale.

A Shakespearean tale for a modern audience.

Also loved how the Tom-Greg relationship ended.  While I assumed that the main characters would end up hating each other and estranged, it was nice to see “The Disgusting Brothers” keep their thing going.  Would love to see a spin off that focused on these two going forward.

This show also had one of the best theme songs and overall score in a ling while.

Not much to dislike about this show (other than it being over).

As for artists being pushed by labels. It's less about radio and more about securing artists slots on to the key playlist which then generates more plays etc. On top of this they are literally everywhere you look if you use social media... Even if you aren't a fan you are somehow aware of these people. They've just switched mediums. Of course they still pay (in one way or another) radio stations too to play this music.

Yeah, I get how that factors in.  But it feels like labels only really matter to established acts (for the most part).  There's less risk taking with labels these days, with little or no support for up and coming artists.  If we look at the top 20 artists on Spotify (according to monthly listeners), only three (Bad Bunny, Post Malone, Dua Lipa) released their debut album within the last ten years (I'm not counting Harry Styles, since he was a known commodity when he went solo).  Part of that is having a larger discography, but it's kind of striking that most of the top 20 artists getting regular plays have been around for a decade plus.  Also interesting is the fact that there isn't one artist who reached the top ten who has fallen below the top 25 (Sam Smith peaked at 7 and is now at 21).  It's a nice reminder (for the few who still need it) that were GNR to release a new album, it likely wouldn't propel them to the top 10 (or even the top 100).  Things feel very static when it comes to overall listenership.  It will likely take another 5 to 10 years before we see any real movement.

In all fairness Drake can turn a couple of sentences in to a full 4-5 minute song. Christ, the amount of lyrics in Locomotive, Drake could create enough songs for a double album with just those lyrics alone 😂

Further evidence of why he's terrible :P

Yeah, I guess a lot of rock fans are listening to their music with cd/vinyl because the numbers don't really match up with the touring numbers.

Possibly.  Another difference is that older folks just don't listen to music as much as they use to.  I know I don't.  And I'm honestly tired of hearing the same artists over and over again.  But if I were to attend a concert (particularly at the prices many artists are charging these days), it's for an established act like GNR, Metallica, Pearl Jam or Radiohead.  Otherwise the tickets have to be dirt cheap or the new artist has to be someone I want to see before they (potentially) blow up.

All those top acts are all young and being pushed to the moon by labels.

I'm not really sure what that means anymore.  It use to mean getting airplay on terrestrial radio and album promotion via magazine and radio campaigns.  But that doesn't really exist anymore in any real way that would affect Spotify streams.

My guess would be that many of these artists get a lot of spins because they're current and because they release a lot of material (particularly dance, latin, and hip hop).  Many have teams of songwriters that can churn out new songs regularly.  A friend of a friend is on Drake's writing team (of which there are 15-20 people).   This will come as a surprise to no one, but according to him Drake is not involved in any of the music composition.  He's handed 20-30 tracks and just raps overtop.

Astounding numbers but 20/40 years later will they have 26million listeners? I find it it incredibly difficult to see that happening.

I do agree with this.  I don't see The Weeknd running laps around artists like Prince or MJ thirty to forty years from now.

120million + plays a month... I think I've heard 3 Weeknd songs?? ha! I'm so!!! happily out of the loop.

I'll give him this: he's one of the few artists these days that bothers incorporating actual hooks and melodies in his music.  I'm not a big fan of that kind of music, but I respect the fact that some of his songs are popular because they're catchy.  Same with Rhianna.  Taylor Swift is a decent songwriters, but a hell of a storyteller and lyricist (even if it sounds like every song is about an ex-boyfriend).  We might dig these artists or their music, but I think for most of them there are reasons to justify their popularity.

  4. Just to expand the topic a bit in regards to GNR and Spotify, what interests me is how GNR stacks up against all other artists on Spotify for monthly listeners.

You can check out the list here:

    https://kworb.net/spotify/listeners.html

Right now GNR is ranked 150 out of 500, with nearly 26.9 million monthly listeners.  To put that in comparison, The Beatles have 30.7 million monthly listeners, Metallica has 26.1 million monthly listeners, Nirvana in at 27 million, Rolling Stones at 24 million, Led Zeppelin at 18.9 million, Elvis Presley with 17.7 million, Pearl Jam with 13.2 million, Prince with 10.9 million, and the Foo Fighters with 20.9 million.  GNR at 150 is one of the top rock acts in the monthly listener charts.  There are only a few other "rock" acts that are above them (Imagine Dragons (18), Elton John (43), Queen (47), and Arctic Monkeys (53), and Lincoln Park (84)).  The rest are pop, hip-hop, or EDM.

The truth is that rock just isn't a big factor when it comes to overall listening habits.  The number 1 streamed artist on Spotify is The Weeknd, with over 121 million monthly listeners.  Lana Del Rey, who most people over 35-40 likely couldn't name one of her songs or pick her out of a crowd, has 43 million monthly listeners.

Here's an interesting summary on what's going on with Spotify's monthly listeners:

  5. I've been following the developments of AI for the past few years and it feels we're at a tipping point for its use and the arts.

Have a look at this video:

This got me thinking about the possibility of some very astute engineers and anyone with the least bit of proficiency with AI to make music in the style of any artist they like.

While there are some really great Axl impersonators, with the advent of AI, all you have to do with write a song and have AI convert it into Axl singing and/or Slash playing.

I'm not really sure artists will be able to do much to stop it under current copyright law.  Impersonation is largely permitted under law.  It will be interesting to see how the legal system handles the advent of AI.  I'm not sure current laws are capable of tackling the current tsumami of AI created works that sound almost identical to our favourite artists.

I guess the good news is that for GNR fans the wait for "new" GNR sounding music isn't far away.  I've always felt that Axl's vocals could take a decent song and make it a great one.  Imagine having the ability to have Axl sing your song or Slash perform your guitar solo.

Not great for the artists who like to control their likeness, but possibly great for anyone who wants to create their own music in the style of their favourite artist.

Imagine hearing Axl singing the entire Zeppelin or Stones catalogue...

That's what's coming and way more.

tell me then, what metoo has done to benefit the sexual freedom of women? In what ways, has metoo made it easier for women to find a sexual partner?

The flower power movement, you know, your parents, have taken care of that.

what has metoo done to improve on that?

how are company guidelines, that forbid sexual relations on the workfloor, in any way benefitting the liberty and freedom of choice of women?

metoo seems to present, that women are asexual beings who do not want sexual relations with colleagues. This is hopelessly out of touch. This is only only one example of a direct shift to a more conservative society where women are restricted.

If that's what you're getting from the MeToo movement, you're not reading the room right.

It's not, nor should it be, a binary choice for woman.  Reducing sexual harassment does not and should not come at the expense of finding a mate.

If you're incapable of letting a woman know you're interested without her feeling threatened or coerced, you're not a good option for her in the first place.  The only people who are really losing out in this scenario are the assholes who can't relate to women in a healthy way in the first place.

there is nothing progressive about the metoo movement, it's really a conservative, backwards movement. the net result is less sexual freedom, the freedom that women fought for in the late 60s. We're straight back to the 50s. If Elvis came on television today, they'd film his from the waist up again. And then, they'd call him a sexual predator on social media.

    Worst. Take. Ever.

Unsurprisingly, you must not be familiar with W.A.P.

Do yourself a favour and go watch literally any hip hop or pop video from the last five years.

Hmm interesting so if for example the states were to break up as someone like Marjory Taylor Green has suggested into blue and Red states then the Blue states would be fine and the Red ones would struggle.

Not to mention that geograpiclly it just couldn't work.

I wouldn’t say that.  Just pointing out that crime doesn’t follow a left or right politics.  Fentanyl, meth and the new synthetic drugs that are crushing people everywhere where doesn’t care about the partisan leanings of one city or state with another.

See now were talking. Actual statistics.

That's why I asked him for a link to the "growing" crime rates. Because facts matter.

Most people don't care about those.

You'll often hear Republicans chastise Chicago or San Francisco as crime-ridden hell scapes that are the product of woke progressivism run amuck.  Then you look at what cities actually have the worst rates of homicide, rape, assault, theft, etc. and it's more often than not cities in red states (Memphis, TN; Birmingham, AL; St. Louise, MO, etc).  Even the most dangerous city in America by most metrics, Detroit, was largely run by Republican administrators appointed by the Republican governor at the time.

Too often take complicated and nuanced issues and wedge them into whatever narrative they want to spin.  And if/when you challenge them on it, they'll either question the legitimacy of your sources, resort to name calling, or bug out completely and ask that you no longer talk to them.

  10. Alright, enough.

It’s really simple.  If you don’t want your points of view to be criticized, don’t post them on a public internet forum.

If you don’t like other members, put them on your ignore list.

If you can’t follow the rules, find somewhere else to post where the rules are more to your liking.

Life is too short.  Don’t waste it on making arguments that you can’t stomach being criticized by people who see things differently.

It sounds like "Goodbyyyeeee~" DUFF VOICE: THE NEW TUBES ARE HERE! "Man in the sea/ Tennessee / amber sea / embassy " . something along those syllables with an long a or e, a shorter follow up a or er, and a long ee.

are we allowed to upload and share audio files on this site, or is it not allowed? i was thinking of sharing an audio file where the parts before and after THE NEW TUBES ARE HERE are loudened, and a version where the audio is slowed down, for the convenience, but if it isn't allowed, i guess it's pretty simple modify the audio yourself if you want to hear it more clearly.

Unfortunately we can't allow posts of this kind due to copyright enforcement.  It would be great to have and for everyone to hear, but unfortunately we live in a world where stuff like this needs to stay off the forum for the time being.   Thanks for your understanding.

About November Rain, it's WAY too long. It's an almost 9 minute song when it should have been a 4 minute song. The Don't you need someone," part is amazing with Slash grinding on the guitar, and Axl's excellent piano and vocals, but it still is way too long.

    That’s crazy talk.

Next you’re going to tell us Stairway, Free Bird, or Hotel California are too long too.

    November Rain is a masterpiece.
