But I want the band I’m a fan of to do things optimally and be as successful as they can possibly be.

    But why?

How does or will the “success” of The General affect your enjoyment of the song?

Moreover, if the guy who helped to create the song and laboured for years to get it to where they want doesn’t care  about achieving maximum success for it, why should any of us?

Great decision by the band. Lose free publicity and additional streaming revenue in a trade off for fans listening to the song for free anyways with none of the above. Genius. Just absolutely brilliant.

Do you think Axl cares all that much about money and publicity at this point?

If I had to guess, and it’s just a guess, an initial physical only release likely works for Axl’s desire to do something different; the mystique of it all and a throwback to how music use to be distributed.

I think concerns over marketing, exposure, and generating income from a 20+ year old song are misplaced.

  3. Read this on Threads.  Makes a lot of sense considering the situation:

    *PROPOSAL*

    (1) Temporary humanitarian ceasefire.
    (2) Gazan women and children safely exit at Rafah for a UN refugee camp in Sinai.
    (3) Egypt agrees because IDF guarantees evacuees’ right of return.
    (4) Humanitarian aid to Gaza—food, water, fuel, electricity, medical supplies—resumes.
    (5) Hamas turns over all hostages.
    (6) Noncombatant Gazan men survive via new aid and hiding indoors.
    (7) IDF declares all armed Gazans combatants.
    (8) Airstrikes stop.
    (9) 360,000 IDF troops invade to fight Hamas.

This is a Dutch punk song from 2011:

This is Bite My Head Off:

I can't imagine the Stones even knowing this band, but the opening chords are still a very striking comparison. :D

Yeah, very similar.  Likely accidental, similar to Anybody Seen My Baby and Constant Cravings.

Either way, both songs sound like The Stooges.

This could be considered scaralige, unsure about word, but Paul + Ringo teaming up with others and playing  Beatles is a silly idea. 50% of team dead, who cares what other bands reform, they're not TB, and as Bono says, they're unworthy to touch the hem of their garments. It would water down/cheapen the myth/mystic/legend. But your right, it'll never happen.

It would still be The Stones...  Or it could be called something else.

People take this stuff way too seriously.  Why not have the two biggest bands of all time unite and play songs that everyone loves?  If it's not your thing, don't attend.  I'd go.  I'm sure many others would.

Not sure quoting Bono is helping your argument.

Same here, it's a very "standard" tune. Bit boring, actually.

As for the album, depends how you look at it, I guess. With the "they're 80 years old" thing in mind, it's pretty good.

Need to listen to the whole thing a couple more times probably.

I'm fairly lazy and apprehensive when it comes to new music.

In order to get me to listen to an entire album I have to really love the artist or the single that was "forced" upon me through marketing has to really hit.

I really like the first single Angry, but I'm little skeptical to listen to the entire album as a result.

I gave Bite My Head Off a chance because it features McCartney on bass.  It was good, but not good enough for me to keep going.  Only reason why I gave Sweet Sound a listen was due to the praise of others.

Listening to bad or mediocre music is akin to listening to bad stand up - I find it very hard to stomach it.  Truth be told it was six or seven years after the Illusion albums came out that I finally listened to both albums in their entirety.  I'm less like that now, but I still have a schism around new music.  Not sure what it's all about.  It might have to do with the fact that so rarely am I impressed with an artist's full album.  Wading through 8-10 mediocre songs for a few gems feels like torture to me.

It's why I stopped listening entirely to new albums by bands I use to love.  U2, Coldplay, Pearl Jam...  It's been so long since any of these bands released anything compelling that I can't bring myself to get excited or listen to their new material (save for whatever first single gets promoted).   It's been 30+ years since The Stones has released anything that caught my attention so I never gave much consideration to this album.

  7. I finally got around to hearing Sweet Sound of Heaven, after hearing so much hype about it.

It's alright, but doesn't do much for me.

It's not the most complicated song; basically follows the same three same chords while Mick and Gaga sing long sustain notes.  Feels like this song has been written many times over.  It's rather light on song ideas and leans heavily on vocalists to carry the song.   Seems like they want to do another Gimme Shelter, but doesn't have the same punch.

It's not a bad song, but not one that I'd be in a rush to hear again.

  8. I enjoy song writing as a hobby.  I'll turn off the radio in the car and make up my own melodies.  Most of it's worthless, but once in awhile something will get stuck in my head and I'll work it out on the piano when I get home.

I'm a big believer in the concept of songwriters being conduits for what's out there.  Really great ideas isn't "created," but discovered.  Some times it takes time; some times it comes immediate.

Don't put so much pressure on yourself.  If you're not enjoying it, take a break and come back to it.

  9. This song is fucking great.

Probably the best song since some of the stuff they released on Tattoo You in '82.

I think artists generally have a certain window to release material before their moment of relevancy closes.  This song, had it been released in the 1970s or early 80s would likely be held in the same regard as other classics.

Really liked the video; felt like this should have been something Guns did with the LA setting.  As much as looking at Syndey Sweeney isn't difficult, kind of wish they had just stuck to videos of the band.  But I guess the chick in the convertible gives the video a little bit of context.  Plus it's The Stones...  But yeah, favourite parts is seeing them reformulate old clips to match the new song.

    Great stuff.

might want to turn your bass up my friend exact opposite for when I listen in my car

I listened to HS and Perhaps on my friend’s $50k recording studio sound system.

After hearing Perhaps, I asked him if he had the bass turned down or off.  He then played a Queens of the Stone Age song and then Welcome to the Jungle and it was night and day.  Those songs you could feel the bass, the low end was present.  You can hear the bass in both Perhaps and HS, but there is no heft to them like how most songs are mixed these days.
