Well, doesn't Guns n' Roses still owe the label an album for their contract?

As we know, Axl is very good at keeping grudges. So maybe he doesn't want to give the label a full album, because they fucked up in the past, and/or rejected his finished products before.

Just talking out of my ass of course. Probably it's not the sole reason, but it could add to the mix, with stuff you've just posted.

If I'm not wrong they had a six album deal:

    • AFD
    • LIES
    • UYI 1 & 2 (count as one)
    • LIVE ERA
    • GREATEST HITS
    • CHINESE DEMOCRACY

So I think they are not tied to the record label.

but maybe Axl doesn't care that much about this shit, he did release Absurd as the first song with this lineup and stuff did get released, even if it's slow as shit and not to our liking as hardcore fans. Like I said before, I think there's a chance Axl is mostly doing it for himself, he worked on the Chinese project a long time after all and invested a lot of material and emotional resources in it, it seems.

so I think it's possible he's just enjoying the ride and figuring out what he wants to do as he's doing it. Maybe there are broad lines of a general plan and he makes changes depending on his mood. We know there is enough material for at least an album, so it can still happen, regardless of what some fans might think of it.

I think he's aware not everyone will be pleased one way or another, as you say, but I believe that if he wants to do it, he'll still going to do it, again, just like he released Absurd and even said from the stage that even if some people don't like it, they are still going to play it or something like that. Same can be true when it comes to the rest of the Chinese era he might be interested in releasing.

But do we have enough material for a mediocre album? I guess so...

yeah if Gn'R manages to release a cool product like a song, an album, a box set, that will be nice and in most cases, a nice surprise, a bonus on top of what we already have. To expect Axl to be dependable when it comes to releasing new product would not be a great idea imo.

They are too afraid of anything leaking again! The industry is afraid of leaks, so we'll never have a real "date", if something happens it will be "today at midnight" or "on friday".

At the end of the day we got so used of waiting and having expectations on this band that it will be impossible to them to fullfill it.

No matter this band does or release, at this point in time, there wil be complaints, complaints, complaints.

By saying that I understand will Axl doesn't want to release anything, why bother. Everybody will complain: chidem leftovers, not having Izzy or Adler, where's Ashba or Fink, Ferrer's drumming, Melissa doesn't have a real role, Dizzy's belt buckle, Axl's voice, not rock enough, not rasp enough, Slash butchering the songs, another song begining with Duff's bass or a whistle, The General not being the magnum opus everybody tought it would be, where's the ChiDem remixes, McDaddy being released, and the worst the empty feeling of a news record not being "greater" than ChiDem and the worst of the bunch.

Complaints up to the year 2079!

They threw together a 30-second montage to announce Hardschool, I don't think it would've cost them a lot of money to make a full video like this. They record all their shows and could've got whoever edits the Selects to do a live video.

But instead they waited a few months to release a lyric video... :shrugs:

As far as new music, it seems like it will only be CD leftovers. Slash said last year(?) they haven't written any new songs.

You got me on that video thing!

I don't care about Chi Dem leftovers, I just want them, to buy back Crash Diet and release it properly LMAO

Are people really expecting GNR to act like a normal band if they release an album? The "album" that will just be a compilation of years-old singles?

They'll probably never release another music video - their last one was released almost 30 years ago. (Or 23 years ago if you count Live Era). Any album that gets released will likely have the same amount of promo as Absurd and Hardschool, Slash will talk about it in a few interviews but Axl won't do anything.

Thinking they'll act like RHCP when they release an album is just... absurd.

There's no place for rock videos on the current rock / hard rock scene, it's just a waste of money.

To me, the fact that we will have any, and I mean, ANY recycled track is absurd! No pun intended!

Release everything new and let the ChiDem leftovers to b-sides or the ChiDem anniversary.

And also, where's the UYI boxset? Another empty promisse?

And I can't argue with the fact that ABSURD'S lyrics are horrendously hilarious, and yes I am aware that most people hate that song, but anyway, I just don't think that a reworked 20 y/old song we've all heard a long time ago it's the worst disgrace of the band's history or something like that.

I'm not a conservative, but "pussy full of maggots" always makes me cringe! In my head I force myself to understand "pussy for a maggot", as I am Brazilian it's easier to disassociate from that.

I like If The World way more than Absurd, it's got a good solo and vocals and it was awesome live.

I'll never get over the fact that Crash Diet, Perhaps or Atlas were never released as a GNR song, but they prefer IFTW to be on the record.

I heard it was supposed to be on a Bond movie soundtrack or something like that... Am I wrong?

This is also what bothers me about the song. It's bad enough on its own, but this is what they use to announce to the world that they're back? This song?!

Even in the upside down, bizarro GNR world, this decision is baffling. And it completely obliterates any argument that GNR doesn't want to release an album in this age because it won't live up to their past work (which was already a stupid argument to begin with). If that were the case, this song would've never made it beyond the mid-2000s.

I really think the song is indicative of the thirst of the GNR fanbase for wanting something new. They could've put out any slop and just had people feast on it, and that's pretty much what they did. What's worse is that they followed it up with HS, which is the better song, but still passed like a fart in the wind because of how bad Absurd was and how it was the first thing the reunited lineup decided to unleash to the public. At least with HS, you could hear it and say, "Yeah, okay. This sounds close enough to GNR in the 2020s," and that would've been perfectly fine. And sane, for that matter.

But did they use the song to announce to the world that they were back? FIVE YEARS after the first reunion concert?

To me was like a "let's get it out of our systems and by some time with the die hards and maybe win new fans with something different, ops, that didn't work so here's Hard Skool" type of thing.

We think too much, but I think it is simple, not a big deal.

But GNR has a dilluted (30 years spam) and small catalogue, so anything they release will sound different, or bizarre, or out of place.

Current GNR has bigger problems than just a song, the Ferrer's drum sound and style, for example, it's not a power house like Matt's or as groovy as Steven, thus making the band sound non-cohesive and with no punch.

Absurd is their worst song by far, and the response from fans indicates that it is objectively bad. I keep reading posts about how Slash made it better, but Slash barely changed anything. It's basically a cleaned up version of the mid-2000s demo.

It's got one terrible verse that repeats throughout the song, no real chorus, the editing is sloppy and the production, while slightly better than Hardschool, is still bad.

Of all the stupid decisions this band has made, releasing Absurd as the comeback single 5 years into the reunion might be the most retarded thing they've done.

I don't think it is the worst song by far, but casual fans don't identify it as a GNR song, just by the way Axl sings it. They expect a screaming-jungle-Axl voice like in Hard Skool, with full-on rasp.

ABSURD is more on a "Ain't It Fun", "Bad Obsession", "Black Letter", "Down on the Farm", "I Don't Care About You", "Sorry" vibe, songs really known by die hards.

I really do like ABSURD, I think it's a modern rocker, but HARD SKOOL lost its punch with the new guitars, I thought it was heavier and way cooler in its demo version.

To me, the problem is that they should have released HS first, it would've caused a better impression simply 'cause fans would relate more to a screaming Axl.

According to Gregg Buchwalter, who played in West's band The Outpatience, West wanted to join GN'R (didn't clarify when), but they didn't let him because he didn't have the right looks:

“Unfortunately in LA at that time, MTV was happening, and everyone wanted band members that had a look, and poor West. Brilliant guitar player, was really thrilled that his friends in Guns N’ Roses were playing some of his tunes, and writing with him and shit. They wouldn’t let him in the band because he was too short and fat. He didn’t look right.”

“His girlfriend told me. She said, ‘He’s asked them a bunch of times to join the band, but they told him, ‘No, you’re too short and fat man, you don’t look right.’ Isn’t that sick?”

“He was a great guitar player man, really good.”

It's the second interview in this video  (great interviews by @Gambit83):

"His girlfriend told me" is such a "my uncle's cousin's friend said"! He's not being on GNR because of his looks is sooooooooooooooo out of place.

They just didn't need a third guitar player.

But then I think all the new album comments are going to still be posted on unrelated threads

There will never be a release date, as soon as they drop a release date old demos will be leaked, or the entire thing will be leaked in a matter of hours or days.

IF, by a divine intervention, we have a new album will be something like HERE IT IS or tonight at midnight it will be available on Spotify.

Maybe, and I said that with a 5% chance, we have a "new-reworked-chidem leftover" like Atlas, OMG, Perhaps or State of Grace, during the LATAM run, we'll be lucky.

I just hope they play Locomotive instead of Coma, and deeper cut like DDM, BA, SB, GTR, TG, Perfect Crime, or anything different. But one just can wish.

  11. And then, today, I read that Aerosmith is releasing 5 pro-shot amazing concerts from their vault!

Why GNR? Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy do you guys treat us like that?

Ain't Going Down is not as strong as Shadow to be used as promotion for the box set, so I wouldn't bet on it being released as a single.

On the other hand, an epic with Slash's guitar (that would make it sound UYI-ish) could be more suitable.

Crash Diet would be perfect! The song is timeless.

  12. I think we expect too much...

There will be "really" new music once one of the big three dies. Unfortunately.

I think Ax had the worst experience possible with CHI DEM, and also a lot of never ending criticism: his looks, his weight, his voice, DJ Ashba, Team Brazil, the reunion, no new music, ABSURD, Hard Skool being watered down. One can undertstand why the guy doesn't want to release anything.

Anyway, I still think the band lost momentum with the CHI DEM Remix album, they lost momentum with a reunion news album, a live NITL album, the UYI Box, ABSURD would be a great second single if not the first material (just because it is too different, but still a cool song).

I don't see any new record, but maybe (and I say maybe) a new song during the LATAM run (Perhaps, Atlas?)

Then, a new album will not make sense with Absurd or Hard Skool, they are already old / dated songs.

Not to blame team brazil, 'cause at the end of the day they are employees and Axl is the boss, but so many good opportunities lost.

The only thing that makes sense now is a TSI (Deluxe Version) with "A Beer and a Cigarette" (Hanoi Rocks) and “Down on the Street” (Stooges), with the video for "I Don't Care About You" in 2023.

And in 2028 the Deluxe version of the CHI DEM record with the unreleased songs and the additional remix album.

Exactly. Thank you for the reasonable, well thought out response.

My whole point is this "GN'R is on top of the world" and "there's a huge demand for GN'R in the US" line of thinking is just false.

GN'R will most likely return to arenas and amphitheaters in the US and see moderate success with ticket sales. That doesn't make them the worst band in the world but it certainly doesn't make them the best, which is what my original comment expressed.

However, there's a few folks on here who don't like that the facts show GN'R just isn't the biggest band in the world.

They don't need to tour the US! They can have a AFD reunion for 30 dates and pack around the world, or just go the Troubador and Whisky.
