  1. Great interview Brando. I'm not really familiar with Mustaine's work or what sort of demeanor he carries when being interviewed, but I thought he was going to lose his shit when he repeated you by asking if you said that he idolized Slash haha. Keep up the outstanding work and thank you for all the efforts you go through to provide us with these podcasts.

For me, yeah. I'm not attempting to conduct an objective analysis of the relative merits of the various versions of this band that have existed over the years for the biggest number of people. I'm expressing a personal preference.

That was the band that existed when I got into Guns N' Roses, I was 15-16 years old then. Music is still really important to me, but it seemed to matter in a different way back at that age - when you're a teenager I think you latch on much more to the music you listen to and the people who make it.

So, I got into Guns (through the earlier line-ups' records), I started posting on this forum, I got really invested in the CD saga, all the news and intrigue...Most importantly, I went to what were (and probably still are) the best live shows I've ever seen.

I was blown away by that big beast of a band with three guitars, two keyboards, technical wizards on their instruments showing their stuff, trying to re-imagine something that had been so big (in another form) a decade earlier. I developed a lot of affection for the guys who'd stepped up to play those shows and deliver those performances against a wider world of critics that considered them illegitimate. It seemed really rock n' roll to me to say "fuck you" and do it anyway.

I had so much fun as a fan in those days, there were high-quality live shows, a sense of hype and anticipation around the (supposedly) forthcoming album, the leaks, the tour, the camaraderie, the inevitable dysfunction and drama, and the sense that the band had the chops and the willpower was there to make this something great and lasting (before laziness, neglect and more inexplicable forms of dysfunction set in and wasted all that potential).

So, for me personally, aye it was the best and anyone who wants to try and belittle that (despite me not passing judgement over what anyone else likes most from the band) can fuck off  .

I hope your team gets put in their place this Sunday, but this beautifully describes my thoughts and experiences throughout the Chinese era. There was so much mystique surrounding everything, the cancelled 2002 tour and hiatus that followed, the uncertainty of whether or not the band had returned to the studio and if the album would ever see the light of day to then fast forwarding to 2006, Axl and the band firing on all cylinders and arguably sounding better than ever, especially Axl, consistent night after night. There was a lot of optimism throughout the community that 2006 could be the year. What a glorious time, even though we had to wait another two years for the record.

Does 'Beautiful' by Christina Aguilera count as a proper cover? Probably not I suppose, but if so, that's got my vote. I remember being stood in an Arena thinking "what the fuck am I watching?" when that happened.

I fucking loved that, even better with how randomly out of the blue it was too. Showcased the talents of Finck and 4tus perfectly. Give me that over Wish You Were Here any day of the week! (as a guitar jam, I'm very much aware that Pink Floyd are vastly superior to Aguilera )

  4. 1. I don't acknowledge the earliest lineup as being anything significant to the band and feel the Appetite lineup was destined to happen.

    2.  Paul Tobias was an integral part in Guns N' Roses. He features on and wrote some of the best songs released under the GNR name.

    3. Chinese Democracy shows Axl Rose at his creative best - I also think as a vocalist, it showcases him at the very top of his game - as does the Live Era re-recordings.

    4. I believe Axl has done himself a grave injustice by the lack of material released over a period of time which would normally be deemed as a creative peak for most other artists. There is still time to put this right.

    5. Robin Finck's renditions of the Patience solo were better than Slash's. Finck is also my favourite guitarist to ever be associated with the band.

    6. Even though I loved the Chinese era and line-ups, I'm still beyond delighted that three fellas who struggled and grew together, through some of the hardest times they faced in their lives in their attempts to make a life out of the biz, were able to mend their differences and rejoin forces to give a boot to the ass of popular music and show to the world that they are still very much on the top of their game. The next few years will hopefully be some of the best ever that the band has experienced. Keep the faith. Rock the Rock

    No, he wasn't. lol

    This.

It did once fascinate me that it was actually a thing. I recommend checking out the series called Rotten Apple on YouTube. The guy even edited snippets of off the cuff McCartney tunes and made them into actual songs - half decent, even though his claims are bonkers.

Loved that cover. Also loved Tina and Ike’s cover of The Stones’ Honky Tonk Woman.

No one is giving any ideas for the next challenge....so I have to wonder if you want another one??:shrugs:

I can't remember off the top of my head what we've had on the previous threads, but have we done year by year? Even something including letter challenges e.g. 'A song containing 'ING' from 1973'

  8. I watched the second series of American Crime Story about the murder of Versace. I didn't know what to expect, my knowledge about him was very limited but it was a really enjoyable watch and very much of the same quality as the first season.

I'm probably going to start watching the series that's just come out about the disappearance of Maddie McCann next. Her parents, as far as I know, didn't want anything to do with it and social media has had a resurgence of all the old conspiracies regarding the disappearance and the parents' involvement. I do think those cunts have played a part in it though.
