  1. Its always interesting to hear other peoples opinions but its never gonna change my own. Also the problem with music critics is that they usually have some kind of agenda and have to go along with the vibe of the publication they are writing for.

    this is true

  2. I prefer to specialize rather than spread. So I listen to my music a lot, getting to know my favorite artists, albums and songs very well, but keeping their number very low. A critic, on the other hand, by the very nature of his job has to listen to a lot of different music. So he doesn't to know that music very well. He needs to make an assessment after just one or very few listens.

    excellent observation.

    and...

Most of my favorite songs took a long while to grow on me.

a lot of those songs that hit you instantly tend to become annoying soon enough. Very often the better albums are the ones that require more listening to before you can appreciate what the artist was trying to do. i love it when that happens. it's like you're sharing in a well kept secret.

  3. Sounds like an insane gig. You always get your monies worth out of PJ. It's so cool that they never stick to one setlist and they can probably play 3/4 songs from their catalog at any given time, which is huge. Seeing them in Brisbane on Wednesday. It is going to kick ass. Btw why are they back in australia next year?

this is from a review on the PJ gig in perth on saty night: Vedder touched on the recent Britney Spears lip-synching debacle, which

sparked calls for artists to declare if they would be lip- synching

    during concerts.

"I have a public service announcement to make -

there will be some lip-synching tonight," Vedder joked. "Not... so I can

dance or change outfits, it's so I can drink and smoke. I just thought

I should declare that because of the new rules."

    Then later on...

"I'm lip-synching," Vedder joked as the crowd carried Better Man

ha ha that's funny, i would've loved to hear that. i was shocked when i heard brittney would do that, why would you pay to go see someone make a goose of themselves.. but plenty did and said it was good. i don't get it. sounds like a money-grab.

btw - are they coming back next year?? i dunno.

Have a good one on Wed.

  4. This probably doesn't deserve its own thread, but heck, I just wanted to have a rave about Pearl Jam, whom I went to see last night. I can't remember the last time I was at a concert where the headliners (or anyone for that matter) rocked so hard for so long. Eddi & the guys belted, and sweated and poured out their soul with songs old and older for two and a half full hours. They played in a huge footy stadium at the end of a freak, week-long heat wave - and event management chose to keep the roof closed. Eddi made more than one remark about that; it would have topped the night had we been under the stars, with a cool breeze. There was only one tiny short 10 minute break, before PJ came back on with Eddi on acoustic.. and soon joined by Ben Harper (who played support earlier)

Eddi jumped off stage, walked through the crowd and gave out a few tambourines. We don't have barricades here, separating the fans from the band. And (luckily) we don't have a mass of bodyguards and security visible everywhere, though there are bouncers (security) around. Everyone was cool, cause we aussies don't mob celebrities :D Eddi just casually walked among the crowd. The guys then kicked several footballs (egg-shaped ones :P ) into the crowd after Eddi had rolled back onto the stage. They just rocked, and had a good time along with us. After Daughter (where they threw in a few short impromptu bars of The Wall at the end) Eddi yelled out - 'good singing Melbourne!' Nothing much makes a good concert better than when a stadium crowd belts out the tunes in one very loud voice. Then the guitarists (& band minus Eddi) had their shot at freaking out on a few solos, they were all soaked. PJ wound up the night with Baba O'Riley - teenage wasteland (which is when Eddi thanked us so profoundly and so humbly) and then it was all over. And about 50 000 people filed slowly (very slowly) out the stadium to the only exit to the train station next door. Lucky everyone was cool, even though we just had a sudden stinking heat wave after a long cold winter.

I'm so rapt to have been able to catch this band live. AC/DC is playing the same venue next year - in summer too. Hopefully they give in and open the roof.

  5. I've always had trouble with Wolfmother. On one hand, I recognize their rebellion - that nostalgia of classic rock - bombastic, repetitious, almost to an obnoxious level, and that's their appeal, they defy status quo, if only by taking up the same torch as those they admire then running in circles. The problem is that they don't bring anything new to the table in my opinion. They are similar in appeal and structure as, say a band like Black Mountain, except that the aestetic is simpler, stripped down, and thought as genuine. But genuine to what? The statement about music is negated by the fact that they're working within a framework which lends itself to experimentation, and yet, they completely ignore the experimental aspect, and keep to well trodden paths. It's not necessarily bad per say, but it is frustrating.

Other modern bands are able to work in a similar vein, though they mix it up a bit. Wolfmother is just stubbornly conservative.

they can do whatever they want, they like it the way they do it and so do tons of fans. who said they were working within such a framework anyhow, is that just a public observation thing?

  6. Lindsey Buckingham deserves credit for turning a lot of her songs into more interesting arrangements. His absence on her solo material is a big reason why those albums are so disappointing..

    -Kickingthehabit

i have to totally agree with this, but add also that without stevie's magic, lindsay's arrangements would have been lacking in the final result. It was one of those magical collaborations between them two. and also, as has been said, Christine's voice added the deep shady tones so needed to their sound. Mick's drumming, too is timelessly classic. Honest raw beats.

  7. went to see these guys at a small pub venue by the bay last month. small venue, small crowd, the floor was rocking. they were in your face, powerful, full of energy. the pit was moshing ..and i was so impressed this high profile band still did gigs like that. Paid forty bucks. ouch.

it's great, isn't it? They did a gig at a 250 capacity London venue in August...I think tickets were about £11. They actually prefer smaller venues. Forty bucks though! I hope you got your moneys worth!

i actually thought forty bucks was cheap. your pound is worth over double our dollar. and besides, most gigs go for the hundred dollar mark over here. the night was essential. great atmosphere. it was the final gig of their aussie tour, before they headed off o/s.

sonny_1313 they played some of their new songs, but i haven't heard the entire album through yet. the first time i heard their new single on the radio i had just pulled into the carpark at the mall. i couldn't get out of the car till the song was over. i thought it was awesome.

  9. I agree. I only get e-mails for comments and PMs. E-mails for thread replies is just too much.

On topic: You should be able to go into your settings and check to make sure if everything is how it should be. If it is, trying turning it on and off and seeing if it resets itself then.

I've tried turning it on and off and logging in and out, to no avail.

Oh well I hope the mod checks it or something.

try deleting all your cookies and clearing your cache and history etc. then empty your trash, restart, then re-set the email option :shrugs:

  10. if not for the credits in panic room, i never would've known that was him. i only ever saw him in his early music career and missed the years in between. but i agree he wasn't a well known figure over here either. i always found him particularly intriguing, without really knowing why. maybe it was the fact that he was attractive and talented, and yet remained somewhat obscure.

thanks for posting the links. i now have a reason to actually look a little deeper into him.

  11. pink floyd sound awful when you are high.

yes to each their own, but most would disagree with you.

and apart from Syd Barret, pink floyd were never ever a drug orientated band.

true, which just makes their music all the more powerful.
