  1. Axl and GNR still had a massive following. Deal with it. Nirvana was a band that was not as big as people try to romanticize it as being. In large part because people went out and bought the second album and then said "wait, what is this shit".

Kurt tried to go street on the second album because (and this is documented) he thought Butch Vig had made nevermind too pop sounding.

people can say what they want but my ass was front and center on MTV during that time. I remember shit. Guns were not as cool according to MTV but they kept playing their videos for a while and people were still buying GNR related shit.

look at the damn sales of spaghetti and five oclock somewhere if you won't believe that.

not to mention that Duff AND Gilby were able to put out albums due to the demand for the band at that time

Think about that. everyone except Dizzy were able to put out albums. Let that sink in for a bit.

But as MANY people on here have pointed out, Justin Beiber sold more albums than Chinese did, does that mean he's better than Axl?, Is lady gaga better?, Chris Brown?...so on and so fourth. I never really cared for nirvana, i've always been a gnr guy. And just because somebody doesn't sell as many albums as someone else doesn't mean they are bad. It just means that the mainstream has tuned them out. Same thing that happened with gnr/nirvana.

The same thing that happened with gnr being tuned out in favor of nirvana probably would've happened with nirvana (if kurt was still alive) around 95ish-late 90's. People would've said "God, this stuff is depressing". Man I really wanna hear some happier type of stuff then they would've started listening to eve 6 or some type of pop-alt type of stuff.

It's just not realistic for anyone to say that guns weren't looked upon as a joke by mass media/general public during the grunge era.

MTV has done this for years and years (when they still played videos)...Mid 80's it was all whitesnake, motley, firehouse. Late 80's it was guns. Early 90's it was grunge. Guns made hairbands look like a joke,Nirvana made guns look like a joke. I remember november rain being played ALL the time on MTV, then a couple years later you couldn't turn on mtv without seeing that fat lady dressed up like cupid with kurt cobain rocking back and fourth in that chair yelling "hey way, i gotta little complain".

I like Lady GaGa *The Fame* and *The Fame Monster*. Her latested album I downloaded and I like all of one track from it. I guess GaGa's gone of the boil with her third (difficult as they say) album. Either she'll come roaring back, or she's kinda finished, apart from touring old material.

    Just found this:

    This is classic!

  2. Chinese Democracy - Anti-communist, directed at the countries leaders.

Shacklers Revenge - Over-coming things in life, just good rock lyrics

Street Of Dreams - girlfriend left me, woe is me

If The World - girlfriend left me, woe is me

There Was A Time - girlfriend left me, woe is me

Catcher In The Rye - About John Lennon getting shot

Scraped - Don't tell me what to do!

Riad N' The Bedouins - Presumably about the nomadic people in the middle east in ancient times who fought and killed each other. Their frustrations, their uneducated traveling, killing, taking over land and having land taken over from you, etc. OP you're wrong about "Rhiad", it's actually the place in Saudi Arabia he is referencing, hence the bedouins. It's just spelled wrong... for some reason...

    Sorry - fuck Slash

IRS - fuck people who sue me

Madagascar - Being brought down with the old band, the "only one left" attitude.

This I Love - girlfriend left me, woe is me

Prostitute - About old band or old girlfriend

    "Riad"

A Riad is a traditional Moroccan house or palace with an interior garden. The word riad comes from the Arabian term for garden, "ryad". The ancient Roman city of Volubilis provides a reference for the beginnings of riad architecture during the rule of the Idrisid Dynasty. The design of these courtyard dwellings in the coastal regions of Morocco were an adaption and modification of the Roman villa. When the Almoravids conquered Spain in the 11th century they sent Muslim, Christian and Jewish artisans from Spain to Morocco to work on monuments. These artisans brought with them the idea of arranging the rooms of the house around the central open-air courtyard that has become today's riads. The riads were inward focused which allowed for family privacy and protection from the weather in Morocco. This inward focus was expressed in the central location of most of the interior gardens and courtyards and the lack of large windows on the exterior clay or mud brick walls. Entrance to these houses is a major transitional experience and encourages reflection because all of the rooms open into the central atrium space. In the central garden of traditional riads there are often four orange or lemon trees and possibly a fountain. The walls of the riads are adorned with tadelakt plaster and zellige tiles. The style of these riads has changed over the years, but the basic form is still used in designs today. Recently there has been a surge in interest in this form of house after a new vogue of renovation in towns such as Marrakech or Essaouira. Many riads are now used as hotels or restaurants.

    Rhiad"

(Placename) the joint capital (with Mecca) of Saudi Arabia, situated in a central oasis: the largest city in the country. Pop.: 2 800 000 (1996 est.)

    "Riyadh"

Riyadh - joint capital (with Mecca) of Saudi Arabia located in the central oasis; largest city in Saudi Arabia

  3. A good bonus track for CDII

If Buckethead, Robin, Brain hadn't quit, then they just might have give the re recorded AFD free as a bonus disc / special edition Chinese.

I doubt teh current line up have bother to record those tracks. I doubt it will ever happen now. If Axl ever passed away, no doubt record companies would have a field day releasing a ton of stuff.

  4. I think Dizzy goes for perfect when he plays piano, its what's expected of him. That's why plays The Blues.

Axl on piano, seems to be more loose, and does what he likes. Being the leader of the band gets away with it.

  5. If they had stuck together they would all be showing up to the 2012 induction without any issues.

As it stands, my guess is, they will all be there minus Axl. If they do perform, they would use a stand in vocalist (maybe more than one ?)

  6. People seem to think GNR if they stayed together they would be this unearthly band. UYI was their peak. The Spag incident didn't do great and the grunge scene was taking over.

Original GNR will never be able to compete in the charts with today's music.

Neither can the current GN'R. The best thing about the current GN'R is the old songs.

  7. I liked the re-recorded Sweet Child and I'd love to hear it all out of curiosity. The only way we'll ever if hear it is if it leaked though - there could be legal issues, it features a long-gone lineup and it wouldn't sell and the media would have a field day. Even adding the re-recorded AFD it to a new release like KISS and Journey did with their re-recordings wouldn't work as it features different musicians to those in the band now. However, I do think it would be cool if the current lineup rerecorded some classic tunes and they put that out as a bonus disc.

I wonder if Chriss Pittman added anything to the suposed AFD recording ?

  8. The whole album is excellent!

I've never really been a fan of the song Civil War, although this is probably the best version ever. The intro sounds really heavy.

Slash is firing on all cylinders during this gig, and both Nightrain and Rocket Queen sound just like they should. His guitar sound cannot be emulated by anyone.

Beggars and Hangers On is a classic track, i've always liked this track.

I could never listen to Velvet Revolver, as Scott Weiland's voice wasn't my cup of tea. On this album I get to hear Velvet Revolver covers including Slither that sound better with Myles Kennedy on vocals.

Credit where credit is due, Myles Kennedy's voice is consistent - he performs without ever burning out.

He is quite funny to. At the start of Patience he says 'whistle if you feel free.. i can't whistle for sh-t..' :D

  9. If AFD were to be re-released, feat. Buckethead, Robin, Brain etc..

would they have used the same cover concept with a new set of Skulls ?

As long as they called it AFD 2001 or AFD 2011 (depending no the line up) I wouldn't have a problem with it.

  10. Riad N' The Bedouins - I had to Google *Riad* and *Bedouins*

    Riad - Moroccan house

Bedouins - Nomad Arab peoples of the Middle East

So is the song about Arabs's and their houses ?

Also: did you seriously not know what a Bedouin is?

seriously - i had never heard the word bedouin prior to the release of the song

I take you haven't graduated high school yet or from the deep south?

To be honest when I first read the word Bedouin, without knowing what the word Bedouin stood for, the first thing that came to me was Bedknobs and Broomsticks the Disney film. I thought Bedouin could be a character or some American slang word.

The today, while creating this Topic, it hit me that I did not know what a Bedouin was, and Google'd Bedouin to discovered:

    Bedouin, Beduin [ˈbɛdʊɪn]

    n

    1. (Social Science / Peoples) pl -ins, -in a member of any of the nomadic tribes of Arabs inhabiting the deserts of Arabia, Jordan, and Syria, as well as parts of the Sahara

    2. a wanderer or rover

    adj

    1. (Social Science / Peoples) of or relating to the Bedouins

    2. wandering or roving

[from Old French beduin, from Arabic badāwi, plural of badwi, from badw desert]

Guess I learnt something new. Up until today I had no reason to know about the Bedouins :shrugs:

  11. Riad N' The Bedouins - I had to Google *Riad* and *Bedouins*

  12. It may not be as present as it used to be, but I actually got into an argument with an uncle of mine today at christmas over the same subject.

I'm sure many of you have seen a line like this, or very similar, in various GnR concert reviews:

"Guns trio of guitars proved worthy throughout the night but it was disappointing to see that Axl needed to institute three guitar players to fill the void that Slash left in the band"

Now, obviously the argument is bad to start off with, because in most cases a lead, and rhythm guitar player make up the guitar sound of a band, generally. It wasn't like Slash created and played every guitar recorded for Guns prior to ChiDem.

Second, and this bugs me the most, is that people honestly state that, and believe it. To me, if you're job is to review music you should probably know that it doesn't take a combination of these 3 guitarists to reach and play to Slash's ability. Just because 1 guy plays the first solo in November Rain, and a different guy plays the 2nd solo, doesn't mean that a guitarist "can't handle" Slash's solo.

If you're reviewing music, and you honestly think that a guy that plays a guitar as his lifelong profession and career, can't play the solo to November Rain etc etc that any 13 year old taking guitar lessons for a year could handle, then you're just not allowed to be associated with anything in music again, ever.

Sorry for the rant, but I just wanted to bring it up..maybe create a discussion thats a bit off the norm around here.

I agree. Axl has 3 guitarists to give the band a powerful sound not because he needs 3 guitars to cover slash's parts.

For the sake of this argument lets throw DJ out of the picture because he is not essential in covering any of the parts...

Bumblefoot and Fortus can cover all the Slash/Buckethead/Finck parts --- but on the flip side, Slash and Izzy could not play all the Buckethead/Bumblefoot parts. So technically who is the better guitar lineup?? hmmm....

    Who's DANKER ?

    ..it rhymes with :D

  13. Ignoring the instrumental side of Chinese Democracy how would you sum up each song (lyrics) in a single sentence ?

Chinese Democracy - Views on China - anti Chinese Government

Shacklers Revenge - Cartoony - some guy (Eddie - Iron Maiden) roaming around with a gun - up to no good

Better - Self pitty, attempting to rise above that feeling

Street Of Dreams - What was once has and now gone

    If The World -

There Was A Time - Looking back - someone you would do anything for (back then)

Catcher In The Rye - ?

Scraped - Don't tell me what to do!

Riad N' The Bedouins - I had to Google *Riad* and *Bedouins*

    Riad - Moroccan house

Bedouins - Nomad Arab peoples of the Middle East

So is the song about Arabs's and their houses ?

Sorry - Feeling sorry for someone - for whatever reason ?

IRS - Sounds like one huge rant

Madagascar - Being brought down by a deep situation

This I Love - about an Ex

Prostitute - Selling your self for the bling in life

  14. The original Rio 3 mix feat. Buckethead and Robin was as good as this song got.

It is better than the album mix, which contains extra shoehorned in layers, and unnecessary additional lyrics at the end.

The Blues is the best track on Chinese Democracy, although the Rio 3 mix is the best version.

I'm not a huge fan of Chinese Democracy. It has its moments, but all too few. The film like intros of some of tracks take too long to get going - I don't have patience for that. Chinese Democracy does not sound good in a car. It sounds like noise a lot of the time. In the home, the guitar work from Buckethead and Robin is the most impressive aspect of the album.

The subject matter (the Chinese Democracy sogns) isn't all that much fun either. Its actually quite depressing.

Appetite for Destruction is full of Get up n'go! - fun, adveture - the wild side of life!

Maybe underneith it all, Chinese Democracy paints a picture of Axl's 10+ years of doom dealing with all thats on the album.

Maybe this goes some way to explaining why Axl has choosen to start adding so many cover songs during the current 2011 gigs.

Can't say I agree with the bolded. AFD is mostly an iconoclastic social experience album about the hopeless situations in street life, and maybe America in general. This comes out directly in songs like WTTJ, My Michelle, and Out Ta Get Me. Paradise City and Rocket Queen are about a need to escape the madness, either physically leaving or mentally/inwardly.

All of the 'party' songs have some irony to them. The speaker in "It's So Easy" cannot be pleased and fades into the night. The speaker in "Nightrain" is going to crash and burn. Compare the first and last verse of "Mr. Brownstone" and consider if the speaker is better off. The hope and ideals of "Think About You" completely fade with the experience in "You're Crazy" and the perversions of "Anything Goes".

I think the main difference is the way that the ideas are expressed. AFD is angry and energetic, a battle cry to rally the troops. The mood in Chinese Democracy is mostly resentment, an individual slowly being consumed with hatred for those who've betrayed him. Both albums have gloomy subject matters, but the method of expression in Chinese Democracy is much darker.

You summed up AFD well. GN'R summed up life through AFD. I think a lot of people relate to AFD and GN'R of that era.

Ignoring the instrumental side of Chinese Democracy how would you sum up each song (lyrics) in a single sencence ?

Chinese Democracy - Views on China - anti Chinese Government

Shacklers Revenge - Cartoony - some guy (Eddie - Iron Maiden) roaming around with a gun is up to no good

    Started a new thread here

(did not want to derail this thread)

  16. Axl was playing a lot of lead guitar and

experimenting with sounds, and was a damn

creative player. Occasionally he would pipe in 'you

hear that Lusk guitar there?!!' - Pittman

Axl's lead guitar - did any of it make it onto CD ?

If Axl can play guitar, wht dosn't he live ?
