  1. "If you’re running a fansite, you’ve gotta ask yourself who you’re doing it for. Are you doing it to get closer to the band? Or are you doing it to serve the fans? Johnny Firecloud [Antiquiet co-founder] and I ran a big fansite back in the day for A Perfect Circle. We pissed that band off so much, posting shit we weren’t supposed to, refusing to take said shit down until we got a substantial statement in return for the fans to chew on. But once you start censoring yourself, then you start becoming little more than an extension of the band’s cocktease “official ” site, only you’re not getting paid. You know what? No matter how close you may get to the band, you’re still going to be the fanboy (or girl)... unless you sell drugs too, I guess. The relationship you build with the fans is way more valuable in every single way. They’ll be there for you at the end of the day." - Kevin 'Skwerl' Cogill.

Running a fansite for the fans does not = fucking the band by (illegally) releasing things that they don't want to be released. Don't get me wrong, I think it's ridiculous that there's a plethora of nearly finished material sitting on Axl's harddrive somewhere. But that doesn't justify someone taking it... The point of a fansite is not for it to be against the band by working every avenue it can to claw information from the group, that's childish. Grow up, and deal with the fact that "GNR" doesn't really tell you anything. That's the way it's been since the late 90's, and it's not going to change. If you don't like it, forget about new GNR. The band ended in 1996 anyway.

  2. OP, I appreciate your decision to make 1st sentence so thick in bullshit. Saves the trouble.

    This.

I stopped reading at '2000's'. This gotta be the stupidest thread of the year.

This. And you missed the best part of the first sentence, right after "2000's," he claims that he is doing this "objectively."

  3. Yeah but that wasn't the best show of all time.

And personally, I don't think people should be allowed to vote for shows they were at. They tend to grossly overestimate them.

Wasn't voting for it, was just mentioning it, guess I didn't mention that clearly. It's definitely in the top 5 shows I've been to, but as its already stated here, the best show was likely an old Guns show.

  4. I know I'll probably be ostracized for this but, I never liked Rocket Queen that much. I mean it's okay I guess, but it's perhaps my least favorite song off of AFD. PTU gets the vote.

EDIT: Also there's a new section for these polls, a sub forum of this section.

  5. All I care about are rocking guitar riffs, superb arrangements, and fun vocal melodies (and some cool bass stuff from Mr. Kerns). Myles could sing about cheese (which is something I don't particularly like) for all I care it wouldn't change my opinion of any Slash album at all. Slash makes them because he likes to rock (like April Wine), not because there's some message he'd like to impart onto the world (though he may do this secondarily, its not the priority). I think with CD it was more of a priority, and that worked well right? Wait.....

  6. He's a dickhead like Heath Ledger was a terrorist and Brando was a mobster. By which I mean he does a hell of a job portraying something he's not.

This season started out as weak sauce, but it's brought itself back the last month or so. Totally worth the slog of an opening 4 episodes to get to the last 5. Looking forward to next week's.

I just caught up to 3.10 today, did the whole season (so far) in the last 4 days, and that is a 100% accurate statement. Took some time to kick into gear, but once it did it was just great.

I dislike the argument that Sammy Hagar more or less started about VH using old material. So what if they didn't write anything "new". Us gnr fans would shit a gold brick of Axl and Slash someday finished up the illusion leftovers and 96' sessions and released that. So thats complete BS for me or any other "fans" to use that arguement against VH.

I want to say that I agree with that completely now, but I'm not sure I do yet. On the one hand I want to say that's completely right, and I don't have exigence to my argument. I don't have a good argument against it other than that I simply like everything GNR (85-96) did. I would with full confidence say that I would love/like all of those UYI leftovers and unfinished 96 session work (though perhaps by then the band had changed too much). Basically, I like VH a lot, but there are songs I don't like/think are not that good.

So I guess I'm saying the "using old riffs/compositions" thing depends on the band and how you feel about them. I don't think VH should have done that because of how I feel about VH in general. Don't get me wrong, I saw them twice during the reunion tour a few years back and had a great time. But there's really nothing that the classic GNR lineup did that I can say I don't like. Yeah so... you're right, but I still feel the same way. :P

Big River used to be called Big Trouble or Trouble, something like that.

    From Wikipedia:

"The songs on A Different Kind of Truth were described by Roth as "a sort of collaboration with [Van Halen's] past."[7] Seven tracks that appear on the album are based on material which Roth notes, "Eddie and I generated, literally, in 1975, 1976, and 1977",[7] and Eddie added that some tracks were written "when I was still in high school and even junior high."[3] "Blood and Fire" dates back to 1984, when it was an instrumental known as "Ripley" featured in Eddie's score for the movie The Wild Life.[8] The original title was inspired by Eddie using a Ripley guitar on the demo, and he sent the guitar back to Steve Ripley for fixing to use it on the album version.[3]"

So 7/13 is less than I thought. And I know you weren't trying to change my opinion, I do genuinely appreciate you guys pointing this out to me.

EDIT: Yup, Zeppelin posted that as I was typing this, didn't see it until I posted. And relistening to those demos posted above, they sound great to me. I know they are sonically not as high quality, but I much prefer them over the ADKOT versions.

I always thought this one didn't get the attention it deserved:

Wasn't ADKOT a compilation of old unused riffs? This album won't live up.

I didn't like ADKOT for that exact reason. It seemed like they took a bunch of songs that didn't make any albums in 78-84, and basically recorded them with a few changes. That's verifiable on some of the tracks which have unreleased/demo recordings. I liked a few of the songs, Outta Space, and a few others that I don't remember the names of. I'd much rather hear what VH 2013 original material would sound like rather than ten songs that for whatever reason never made an album.

We haven't heard a new Eddie riff/composition since VHIII (which should in now way be the template for this next album, nor am I worried of that since it's been over 15 years), I'd like to see what 2013 EVH riffs sound like. I know ADKOT got pretty good reviews and was well received by fans, but it seemed lazy, overproduced, and just not that good to me. I'll give it a re-listen to it in the next few days though, since this thread has sparked my interest.

  7. Oh, absolutely. They werent THAT good live tbh...

I've heard it depended on the night.

This was raised earlier but this is a tough subject because how do you measure "better"? My favorite band of all time, is GNR, to me they are the best band I listen to. But, I could easily see the argument (as made above) that Zepp, Stones, etc. are "better." I guess I'll arrive at the conclusion already stated here: it's personal preference.
