  1. Gilby... the guy who was brought in solely because he looked like Izzy.

    You mean Fortus?

It's funny, but he does look a bit like him at a distance. I remember seeing GNR in an arena, and I was pretty far back. Seeing 4tus with that similar black/dark hair and almost the same array of guitars Izzy played (white ES, black LPC) was pretty funny.

  2. Exactly.

Another thing that gets lost with Gilby is that the dude very well could have saved the UYI Tour for all we know. The guy jumped in, learned all the songs back when the set was pretty unpredictable and did a great job.

Not only did he learn the 30 or so songs being shuffled in and out the setlists, but he did it in two weeks (Slash I think said this on some GNR documentary). Knowing the ins and outs of 30 songs in a two week period is pretty impressive. I think he deserves a say on GNR matters. And the other point raised somewhere in this thread: the majority of people who know of current GNR probably don't think they should use the GNR name, it's not some outlandish opinion of Gilbry's... hell it's my opinion too.

  3. I am a Metallica fan, and a guitar player, and just, no, to all of that. He may have been good once, but he's a wah whore and mostly just lazy now. Basically he would learn a couple licks and over use them on an album, then learn a couple different licks and over use them on the next album. Kirk Hammett if anything is massively overrated.

And Hetfield? If anything, out of them two I'd say Hetfield (that right hand....) is underrated. Though, being the Metallica representative, I'd like to hear your thoughts on that.

  4. To me, 12.x lb's sounds like it includes shipping weight and the case, but I could be wrong. I don't think the extra wood on the neck/tuning pegs should make any Jackson weigh that much, but like I said, I don't know much about Jackson's. The RR model I played, I did not like that much. Just out of curiosity, why 8 strings? Is 7 not enough? :P

  5. Family Guy was consistently good seasons 1-7ish. After that it became hit or miss, and after that it became stupidly redundant and pointless. I was a huge fan when Adult Swim took the helm with FG back in the mid 2000's, I haven't bothered to watch a new episode since season 9? I think. Not to say there haven't been good episodes, but ratio of good:bad became atrocious.

  6. - For years, I thought Axl says "idiot" instead of "hit it" right before the band starts It's So Easy on Live Era

    - For years, I thought Axl says "take that wonderheart" instead of "take that one to heart" at the end of Out Ta Get me

    I think that's it.

  7. Wow, that's heavier than I expected. I tried looking on the first page to see what your guitar is but it seems this was started as a pedal thread. No Ibanez, ESP, Jackson, or Shecter that I know of should weigh that much, though I only assumed it was one of those based on the fact that those guitars more often than not are the ones with FR. Is it a LP with a FR?

  8. "17. A version of Chinese Democracy was completed and ready to be released in 2000; however, when producer Roy Thomas Baker was hired, he decided everything (reported to be up to 30 songs) needed re-recording."

So we have Mr. Baker to blame for the apparent 8+ year delay of the release after 2000? Axl must of hired/fired hundreds of people during the production of this album and he decided to listen to some random producer?? Like wtf.

Was just scrolling down to the bottom to post basically that. Also, I'd be really interested in hearing this 2000 version, can't imagine it's really that much worse than what we got in 2008...

  9. Have you seen the new Floyd sustain blocks? They´re making them in granite the "stone tone" block. I was looking for more information on it, the weight, that is. I wonder if it would get a bit too heavy if I installed one.

Should be fine I'd guess. How much does your guitar weigh now? Mine's 11.1 lbs with no floyd rose. I don't know much and FR, but guitars that have them generally are on the lighter side already, and I don't think they'd make a product that would be too heavy for too many people.

  10. Jimmy Page shouldn't be compared to Brian May and Robby Krieger (I get your point, but the three of them are not comparable). Page was light years better than they were and he's not really overrated because the guy was a monster. He knew how to play his shit. Compare that to Brian May, who generally played the same thing over and over again (not a knock to him) or Robby Krieger who, let's face it, isn't even on the same level as them.

Its fair to say the four you listed are better all around guitarists than those two, but none of them even touch Page. I don't think any of them are technically more proficient or all around better than Jimmy, who is legitimately one of the greatest guitar players and actually gets rated as such. Compared to the people he's usually rated with like Keith Richards or The Edge who so far below him.

Lastly, not a Metallica fan, but Kirk Hammett is extremely underrated. I think that fits the qualifications, as I'm not saying he doesn't get enough mainstream exposure, because he does, and his skills are still severely under-appreciated. Not saying he's some trailblazer, but he doesn't get as much credit as he should, and thats coming from someone that couldn't give two shits about Metallica.

I knew I shouldn't have put Krieger in there, Richards would have been a better example. Page was pretty sloppy, and he's still a bit sloppy, it's part of his style. Although I'm a bigger Zepp fan than any of the four I listed, I stand by my claim that all four are better than Page in terms of technical ability. Part of it's a difference in stylistic influence, Page was influenced by the blues and 50's guys. The four I listed were mainly influenced by Page and the 70's/early 80's guys. Different styles of music require different levels of technical ability to play. If you asked Page to learn a random BBF song or Doug Aldrich solo, I don't know that he could. Again, I like Page's playing better than those guys, but technical/guitar playing ability is different.

Part of this issue is in the definition of term "underrated." To me that means someone who is not acknowledged for their technical prowess in guitar playing. But to some it just refers to whoever wrote good melodies/riffs and more popular songs. I guess either can be the definition depending on your own judgement; no right or wrong answer.

I'm not familiar enough with Metallica's material to comment on Hammett. From the stuff I have heard, I know he's an excellent player in both lead and rhythm, but can't say whether or not he's underrated.

I'll also add Prince. He's not usually acknowledged as a guitarist.

I see that one a lot. He's good, but not underrated. Are people surprised to find out that he's a fairly competent guitar player? Yes. Does that mean he's underrated? No.

Not that either of these guys are majorly popular, but I do think Tommy Skeoch gets overshadowed by Frank Hannon (both of Tesla) in discourse because Hannon was always billed as the lead player, though it was more of a dual lead set up.

  11. Wow, didn't expect the hate. I love the show. Don't care about the staged stuff, the humor is often pretty good. The specials are great, they go to a lot of places that most people of the Western world would never see/know much about (parts of India, Vietnam, Bolivia, rural Africa, etc.). The show might have some issues, but it's a lot better than 80% of the garbage that is called modern television.

And I like cars, they have very interesting ways of testing them. Other shows do it more by the books, but if I wanted a run in the mill review, I'd read an online/print journalism review. Let the TV show be a TV show.

I only watch it if Porsches are on it.

Keeping my fingers crossed they drive the 918 next series... we'll see.

  12. Fuck, how have I not been to this section of the forum before?

My favorite guitar is my 2007 Gibson SJ- 100. She is a beauty! I'll have to post pictures sometime

    Have a great Stratocaster too

Yeah it's unfortunate that this section isn't utilized more often. I'm sure there are plenty of guitar players on this forum who have digital copies of their material/their playing that could be exchanged here. You reminded me though that I haven't posted any pictures of my gear yet, will take some quality pics early next week.

  13. A lot of you are confusing underrated with "not mainstream popular." 4tus, Gaines, Mars are definitely underrated. Almost everyone else listed in this thread is just not popular in the mainstream.

Doug Aldrich, Bumblefoot, Jake E. Lee, Steve Morse, they aren't underrated, they just aren't acknowledged as mainstream guitar heroes. I'd say all four of those guys are more technically proficient (and probably better all around guitarists) than Jimmy Page or Brian May or Robby Krieger, etc. But, people like Page, May, Krieger get rated so highly because the bands they were in became icons of the time. Not to say those guy couldn't play, they were/are terrific guitar players.

I'm happy to see that no one has mentioned Lindsey Buckingham as being underrated (as so many try to claim), because he is currently appropriately rated.

  14. Speaking of rushing things out before they're finished, Battlefield 4's release has been a complete shambles lol

Freezes on all currently released platforms, netcode is awful. but DICE have been patching the game in efforts to save the game..

they managed to accidentally put in the new weapons which should of featured in the first DLC pack with the patch to address the current issues.

How the fuck do you do that? It's still an awesome game though.

don't listen to me, i like cod ghosts

LOL, so that's what the MTAR and L85 were doing in those new assignments. The PC release was so buggy, still is a bit. Crashing seems to have mostly stopped, now there's a RGB blur that happens randomly. I've only gotten 1 patch since release I think, and that was a week or two ago. This is SOP from DICE though, BF3 was the same way. Though BFBC 2 was much smoother.

  15. Kim Basinger won Oscar for LA Confidential? LOL.

I thought your post was a joke so I looked it up.

  16. Stairway to Heaven is the song you play when someone tells you rock is nothing but noise and screaming vocals.

    Agreed.

And even though I went with WTTJ in the other thread, I have to go with Stairway here. It's the quintessential Zeppelin song, and possibly the quintessential "classic rock song." It has had so much influence on so many things (as SCOM has), but I think the arrangement and melodies in Stairway are a bit better than SCOM's. Don't get me wrong, I'm a bigger GNR fan than LZ, but sometimes you gotta know when to pay respect and admit not everything about GNR is perfect. Now Ain't Life Grand on the other hand... that was perfect. Though that's a different discussion, and I know most of you disagree. :P
