  1. I got the job. I'll be teaching Norwegian and Religion (which also includes humanism, atheism, etc., in case anyone wondered if I've found Jesus). It's gonna be a lot of hard work these next few months, with both college and a steady teaching position, but I'll make it.

    Kiss your weekends goodbye, Sir.

  2. Female student: Mr. magisme, you should come to the gym at night.

    Mr. magisme: Why?

Female student: So you can work me out. [group of girls giggling]

    Mr. magisme:

    ....

Probably the only thing my students pull on me that I don't know how to handle.

I have no idea how to handle that either, so I just act like I'm dumb and don't pick up on the obvious flirting. I don't really mind it as long as it doesn't get out of hand.

    That's been my strategy too.

    Didn't you say you're a kindergarten teacher?

As of recently, but my teaching degree and majority of experience is with high school students.

  3. I can't seem to remember where I am in this show. Could have sworn I watched Season 2, but I don't remember what happened with Nate and why he was going into surgery. So, just to be safe I'm going to completely re-watch Season 2 and go from there I guess.

Finally getting around to doing this. Only watched the first two episodes, and some stuff is pretty foggy but I know I've watched those before. Going to continue to watch through Season 2, regardless of if I start remember things. I'd like to finally finish this show.

    You won't be disappointed.

  5. It's like that here too. Kindergarten and elementary school teachers are mostly female. I think it's because most men don't really enjoy the "raising kids" aspect of the job - to me, it's far more interesting to teach teenagers about WWI than it is to teach 8 year olds not to throw crayons at each other.

See, that's what I thought and why I went to teachers college to be able to teach Grade 7-12. However, I don't know if it brings out a maternal instinct in me, but there more time I log in a kindergarten classroom the more I like it better. The kids are always happy and always happy to see you compared to high school, just reading to them or playing with them means the world to them, and the lesson plans are far easier when you're simply teaching the kids the alphabet or to count to 10 instead of the history of WWII.

This would be a great thread if y'all weren't being trolled by the person that all the sudden dropped in and started it to target Mags... just my intuition that is NEVER wrong. Ask my husband about that.

I targeted someone I didn't even know prior to this thread? lolol

Paranoia to that degree is not healthy.

  6. I think rowdy kids are way easier to deal with for male teachers. Most women don't have the natural authority that men do.

There are definite benefits to being a female teacher though. This week while supply teaching kindergarten a female student didn't make it to the bathroom on time and asked for me to help her get changed and I definitely didn't want to be in that position and called a female co-worker to deal with it.

How is that a benefit for your female co-worker exactly?

    I guess it's not

I just meant that female teachers by and large have the luxury of not finding themselves in awkward situations with female students.

  8. I've done all of those except Babylon. Gatsby the past couple years for Fitzgerald. It's obvious, but it's obvious for a reason.

You sound like an excellent teacher :headbang:

If you ever run short on time for Fitzgerald, I highly recommend Babylon or Winter Dreams which is basically the 20 page version of Gatsby.

  9. What demographic of students do you deal with?

Mostly white middle class students from agrarian backgrounds or with parents who are prison guards or work in construction.

Does anyone know what it's like to be a shitty teacher who can't command the respect of inner city students? I always felt like that'd be such a sad existence.

Commanding respect isn't always the biggest issue. A lot of high school students simply have no interest in learning or being in a classroom environment, and that's often more soul-crushing than a student being disrespectful.

American Literature and one Mythology class.

Wow, you're lucky. Teaching a course on American Literature would probably be my dream job. Have you ever used:

"A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner

"Hills Like White Elephants" by Ernest Hemingway

"Babylon Revisited" by F. Scott Fitzgerald

"A Perfect Day for Bananafish" by J.D. Salinger

    "Cathedral" by Raymond Carver

I used these for a unit on short stories for a Grade 10 English class last year and the students generally responded to them quite well.

  10. If there's any fellow teachers on this board, I thought this thread might be fun to exchange lesson ideas, stories, etc.

Right now I can teach Grade 7 & 8 or high school English and History, but I'm going back to school in a few weeks so I'll be able to teach Junior/Senior Kindergarten - Grade 3.
