  1. I watched The Wolf Of Wall Street this morning. Liked it a lot more than I expected to. Leo was great in it, definitely one of my favorite roles of his.

I don't think he's had a bad movie since The Beach.

Selma - Very well done and definitely a travesty that Daniel Oyelowo wasn't nominated for Best Actor. However, I was a bit disappointed that the movie didn't really explore King's life to the exhaustive extent of some recent biopics like Lincoln or J. Edgar.

  2. Debating whether I should watch The X-Files. I've never seen an episode

You definitely should. With the exception of the pilot, and four or five other eps, the first season is entirely skippable though.

As are the final 2 seasons, really.

So does it work just watching s02-07 then? Meaning I'm not missing anything important?

X-files is pretty much a new case every episode right? Or are there longer plots and "mysteries"?

Edit. Shit 200 episodes are way too many, don't think I'll ever get around to see it.

The pilot, Squeeze, Ice, Eve, Beyond the Sea, Darkness Falls and Tooms are about all one needs of the first season, then your'e on solid ground until the end of S7. At it's best, it's one of the finest shows network television ever produced.

"Home" from Season 4 is probably my favorite standalone episode.

I love Home, it's so dark and graphic I still can't believe it aired on network television. Clyde Bruckman is still my favorite, I love the earlier, funnier episodes.

Is the movie connected or is it just like a long standalone episode?

I'm pretty sure the movie takes place between the end of the sixth and the beginning of the seventh season.

That's another good one. I also completely forgot about Drive which we probably have to thank for Breaking Bad

I'd focus on exploring Season 1-7 and then 8 if you're really enjoying the show.

While the bulk of the show is a new case each episode, there is the overarching storyline involving aliens that stretches throughout the entire show and some other highly enjoyable storylines like the disappearance of Mulder's sister that is revisited every once in a while throughout the first 7 seasons.

"Home" from Season 4 is probably my favorite standalone episode.

  4. The Prestige - Highly enjoyable, though Christian Bale's fake Irish accent gets rather annoying after awhile.

King Kong - Also highly enjoyable and visually spectacular. Couldn't help but think Jack Black was miscast, however.

Inherent Vice - Very well done. Joaquin Phoenix is fantastic in this film, but I think The Master is a bit stronger/more cohesive film overall.

  5. I've started getting principal and vice-principal supply work. While I enjoy the feeling of slowly but surely moving up the ladder, the truly endless paperwork and dealing with problem children is rather stressful.

That's cool, man. I still haven't decided if I want to go that route myself, or continue with a PhD and start teaching at university level after a while.

Best of luck, Sir. Part of me kinda' thinks I should at least do a Masters, but I'm rather burnt out after BA and BEd.

  7. In 2012, a proactive Australian anti-vaxxer named Stephanie Messenger self-published a children’s book called “Melanie’s Marvelous Measles.” With the book, Messenger endeavored to “educate children on the benefits of having measles and how you can heal from them naturally and successfully.” The book’s illustrated cover features a girl frolicking in a meadow with her stomach exposed, revealing a number of measles pocks all over her body. The whole thing is truly grotesque — so much so, that Amazon has put a disclaimer on the book’s description, noting that it is “provided by the publisher/author of this title and presents the subjective opinions of the publisher/author, which may not be substantiated.”

The book is made all the more relevant, now that a massive measles outbreak (due to the steadily growing vaccine “trutherism” movement) has infected more than 100 people in 15 states, including five babies at a Chicago daycare center.

  8. I still think this is probably the strongest post-UYI cover and it'd be a real shame if we never get a studio version. I don't think it would have sounded terribly out of place somewhere on the first half of Chinese Democracy either. What do you think?

  9. As I've said a billion times I LOVE Star Wars. Without a doubt my favorite media franchise of all time and its made a big impact on my life. I still cannot believe we are getting an Episode VII, and its something that I've been waiting for, for like 15 years.

That being said, The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones are just bad. They are poorly executed, written, disappointments unlike any other piece of media out there. There will never be something as hyped and then let down as much as Episode I ever again in movies. That being said, I still often watch them and have come to accept them- flaws and all- as a part of the greater story because that is what they are. With that mindset I have found things to like about them, but they are still objectively terrible.

I've always thought Episode I was infinitely better than II. The Phantom Menace has the awesomeness of Darth Maul, podracing, and an epic final battle that holds up to anything from the OT, IMO. Episode II, on the other hand, is nonstop painful dialogue and horrible acting from Anakin and Padme.

  10. The survivors get fewer and fewer every year. Now I am well versed in the subject but I do believe people need to be reminded of what happened because when the survivors are all gone so will their memories. Every story needs to be heard.

One of the highlights of my undergrad was interviewing a survivor (Sarah Ginaite-Rubinson). What have you found to be the best books on the subject?

Gitta Sereny's Into the Darkness, Helene Berr's diary and Ronald Headland's Messages of Murder were the best one's I've encountered, aside from Noakes and Pridham's Nazism.

  11. I have never seen a 3D film in my life, but then, I go to the movies about once every three years. Have you got to put stupid looking glasses on?

Avatar was definitely worth seeing in 3D. Load of shite in 2D but worth seeing in 3D.

Without a doubt the only worthwhile 3D film experience.

For me the two best 3D experiences I've had were Avatar and Prometheus, both shot native 3D and looking sharp and benefitting from the format. So few movies are shot in native 3D that most movies advertised as 3D look terrible.

I completely forgot about the 3D remake of My Bloody Valentine. Even though the film was laughably bad, it was a fun experience having axes flying out of the screen at me
