  2. Thanks for all the broad perspectives and different approaches to the question so far!  Based on such incredible responses I think I can ask a better question then I did in my original post:

Is the NITL media silence inadvertently highlighting nuGNR with in the hardcore fanbase?  And wouldn't it be typical the GNR circus if it was the case that during nuGNR no one could discuss Slash in order to highlight nuGNR, but now that Slash is back but Slash cant talk, its actually still highlighting nuGNR?

Axl just not going on tour likely wasn't an option at a time when GNR was the biggest band in the world.

    Agreed.

Axl has stated that Alan Niven booked the tour with out his permission and that the reason he didn't want to tour at the time was because he was struggling and doing thereby everyday.  Niven pressured saying that Slash would die of addiction if he didn't get on the road and straighten out a bit.  Niven suggested that would be partially Axls fault.  Axl even has suggested that Slash knew how vulnerable Axl was and wanted to somehow damage him by making him tour.

I cant track down the best version of Axl staying this, but here is one.  Sadly with less details:

Axl:  "As I've said before, I shouldn't have been on tour when we started in '91. That had a lot to do with Alan Niven, our then manager, and Slash. In my opinion Alan wanted money and Slash wanted the touring to get the better of me given my circumstances at the time. My safety and well-being were not their concern."

  4. Theres so much that can be discussed based on these excerpts.  The Izzy stuff... I think theres a lot there.

Axl talks about Izzy having "demands."  And dismisses them saying that they "weren't going to be met."  Almost dismissing that one can give demands?  But then goes right into his "stipulations" to Izzy.  Why did he see Izzy as obviously having no say?  Or at least that everything Izzy said was ridiculous and can just be ignored?

Well, it seems that Izzy wasn't doing some actions that Axl thought were what made the band what it was.  Izzy not moving on stage - instantly shot down by the interviewer - is something Axl thought warranted a pay cut?  To me this screams that Axl had a fundamental lack of understanding about what made the band so popular.  It wasn't that they danced around like pop stars!!

Or Axl also complains that Izzy only brought in demos of incredible, legendary songs.  What is that?!?!  Izzy isn't in half the mixes on UYIs anyways!  Axl seems to demand of others what he himself wont do.  He didn't show up for most sessions with nuGNR.  It may very well be that Izzy put in the required effort and Axl was simply confounded that Izzy wouldn't want to hum and ha over it for a few years and have a series of IT guys re-amp it with the arrival of every new piece of technology?

Anyways it all sounds to me like it could be summed up as 'Izzy wouldn't do everything I said to do, including the weird stuff like my demand that he shake his ass.'

  5. I just wanna celebrate the fact that he does fully acknowledge that he has emotional and psychological issues.  He talks openly about having at least one therapy session per day.  I think thats incredible.  Both that he took responsibility to get help and also that he shared that with the world.  Thats brave and it helps to de-stigmatize therapy and mental heath struggles.  So good for him!

Elsewhere in that interview (pretty sure this one or at least another RS feature) he talks about being a victim of childhood sexual abuse.  Again, so brave.  He states his purpose for sharing this as an effort to help others who suffered, to build awareness.  He states a desire to work with an organization that works with children.  He's consciously using his real life story, blended with his rock star legend to seek to help others.

Of course attacking a biker whilst sporting sweaty lil' bicycle shorts and a boa probably presents some barriers to joining the board of a registered charity.

Impacted by trauma, insulated by fame and handlers, I believe he's done all he could.

I shared it a while ago here when I first thought I finished it.

It started off as just recreating Axl's piano part, because I had no idea what he was playing because there's too much stuff going on, then I did the orchestra, then the guitars.

    Some notes:

-The main piano melody is 99% correct, including the phrasing, although some chord harmony parts in the 2nd half of the 2st verse may be missing (but I can't tell since there's too much stuff going on)

-The guitar overdubs are mostly right, except for most of the bends, since its difficult to do that on GarageBand iOS. Also side-note, the left main rhythm guitar is using "full chords" (don't know what the correct name is) instead of power chords just to improve stereo imaging.

-The orchestra melody is right, but the harmonies are the best that I could hear from the multitrack.

-I didn't do Pitman's digital farts, although I'll probably do them later just for the hell of it.

-The ending of the song sounds way more somber with only the piano (at least from what I "transcribed"). Link to only the piano: here

Its nice to hear without the farts:)  This is really wonderful!  And on garage band?!  Nice, man!

I use garage band often too and I hope it wont bother you if I ask for advice from time to time?

I agree about the end of the song.  Was very cool to listen to it with piano only.

This songs been in my head for a while now and it was meaningful to connect with the song this way.  Thank you.

  7. oops missed a few days!  didnt see that the voting period shortened.  I was tempted to go with Somebody Knockin' again, but with no other votes going there yet, I was gonna vote Time Gone By.  But when Downliner talks Izzy, you gotta listen!

So I will go with Somebody Knockin'. Not only because I know it in my heart @downliner, but because I wrote a thesis on Somebody Knockin' in the first round of voting!  Haha!

    In first place...

What media can talk about? This is just a nostalgia act

Im sad that I have to agree that your point seems fair enough.  I hold out some hope though, but with out disagreeing with you.

I guess there is a bit of an answer to your question:  Boats and bike politics.  But Im more interested in hearing Stinson repeat the same GNR talking points in 5 interviews then I am in hearing Duff talk boats.

  9. It seems to me that there is a general consensus here on the forum that there is some form of contractual agreement for NITL participants to not speak with media about GNR business.  Adler seems to have spoken directly to it on Mitch Lafons podcast.

A lot of new interviews with former members are getting plenty of attention from us hungry fans.  And we are sometimes finding ourselves looking back to that era.  Maybe just because theres media to consume, even if its been discussed before.  Plus the regrouping probably brought a lot of fans back, so they are learning about the Chi Dem era for the first time.  With so little to discuss of NITL GNR theres even more time to check out the previous era?

I personally like the CD era as well as classic era(s).  Happy enough about NITL and thrilled I saw it.  So, basically I like it all.  But I would find it so ironic if the current bands silence is promoting nuGNR and its individual members careers, when Axl fought so hard against promoting classic GNR or its members during the nuGNR era.

This is my first time starting topic, sorry if its been discussed or if this post in unclear, short sighted or what ever else!

    What do people think?

Thanks man! The music and the art were all a solo effort on this track, the music and vocals are my own work and as for the art; I've always liked Edward Hopper's work, particularly Nighthawks, but the bar always felt lonely, so I added various well known pop culture icons and wall decorations (apart from the yellow man, that was a photo I took). I do enjoy making the covers for the songs, the cover for the track High Hopes (shameless plug) was taken from the 36th floor of a building in Canary Wharf at sunset and is another favourite of mine:

incredible, thanks for filling me in!  I love your additions to the work as well as your motivation!  I'll have to check out Hopper as well.  Great photography too!  Really impressive stuff!

This is kinda sorta music related. I made a "almost" shot for shot parody video for Poppy's "Doritos Monster Energy Drink" video. The music (and all of the sound effects/foley work) for the parody is what I made.

    Here is the original video

    and here is my parody

Hahahahaha!  This is awesome!  Ive never heard of Poppy before so I will have to check that out more, but this alone is fantastic!  Thanks for posting!

Here is one of my tracks that was put on a compilation album last year; I have made the grand total of fuck all on the royalties so far! I think I have already posted it on here before:

It's also on itunes, but I don't have that so I can't get a link.

Here is the Soundcloud low quality version:

yes!  This is my personal favourite of the little Ive heard from you so far!  And I love the dadaist art on the soudcloud widget - is that what your band picked or maybe even designed?

I have to admit I have spent the weekend doing that, and though I enjoy it a fair bit, I try to replicate it note for note on GarageBand. So far I've only completed Prostitute. So you got one person here who would appreciate it

Thats awesome!  Have you/ will you share that on here?  Id love to hear it!

side note, Im feeling the weight of my description of my recordings.  They are not as good as the 89th layer of chi dem isolated!

Thankya! Glad it wasn't total overkill from the repost :) lol.

When it comes to the Slash style... me personally (Disclaimer; *in MY opinion only* as there will always be a billion and one people that'll tell you I can't sound Gunsy whatsoever at all ever ever ever and that I suck) apart from the major and minor pentatonic scales being way prevalent in what he always did the weirdest tip I can give you is concentrate on his vibrato. Obviously he has some super smooth vibrato (November Rain etc) when he wants, but for the most part especially on the bass strings its a pretty prominent "shaking" sound compared to say Neal Schon or Steve Vai (instinctively anyway, not saying they don't do that ever.

The key to getting that vibrato (apart from recognizing it) that i've found is literally in the strings. The 11 gauge Ernie Balls that he uses and that I use on my Les Pauls are heavier and tighter than the 9's I use on my strat and even though physically I know how to get that vibrato on my strat, it NEVER sounds the same because the 9's don't kick back on the fingers as hard as the 11 gauge strings do so your fingers don't work as hard to get the vibrato and the tension isn't there to push back against you from the strings themselves.

Maybe thats all obvious...but it hit me kinda late that with all the gear in the world and practicing the scales... his vibrato is so unique that it gives a lot of the sound...and a lot of that sound is in the strings.

Oh, and the fact that he's Slash helps too :).

(btw @SoundOfAGun - that is fucking cool! thanks for posting that. Hope the pickups worked out for ya!)

Thanks!  Thats totally the type of hints I was hoping for - the vibrato especially.  Its almost overkill if you go by the book.  Im more of an Izzy player for sake of comparison, so it sounds to my ears like the vibrato is almost like 'peacocking'

I'm not sure rockstar is the word haha but hey thank you for that..... I definitely play music and try not to suck (note; I said that I *try* not to suck :) )

Seeing as this is GNR world I thought i'd (re)post this on this forum in case you're interested, This was a video I did for Guitar World Magazine based on my Use Your Illusion tone... To anyone who has seen it posted before, Sorry! :)

I hadn't seen this, thanks for reposting!  Totally nailed the tone.  Any quick tips for achieving Slash style riffs - on the technique and feel side of things?
