  1. I sent an email to the GNR webstore last week to see if they were going to sell any of the current merch on the website and they replied back with there has been no communication from the band on selling on the website. Ive always seen some of slash's left over European tour merch on backstreetmerch.com and in the US rockabilia.com. Maybe they will wait until the tour is over and then try and get rid of it online somewhere.

i hate everything about Guns N Roses in 2017. Overpriced , shitty merchandise. Overpriced tickets to a nostalgia tour.  No new music .

Chris Pitmen was right , it's a fuckin cash grab

Apart from new music, its what KISS has been doing since their reunion tour in 96. However im not ready to be negative yet. Once this tour wraps up in November will be the telling story. If 2018 will be about more touring and no new music then ill be done as well. I cant see them touring and living out of a suitcase next year for another 2 years without new music whether its an album or some sort of an EP. Slash would be bored without making some sort of new music. His life is record music-tour-repeat, so im holding out for info once the tour finishes. This tour has been about establishing relationships after 25 years, we just need to be patient until the end of the year.

Essentially from what you're saying, their drama/image had begun to overshadow the music in the minds of young people in the UK. Therefore, even if they had released an Appetite style record, GnR would still have been perceived as "out of touch" and rejected for all their rock star trappings.

correct ronin. The band by then looked and came across as an like an inflated version of the stones and they looked so far removed from their appetite days. When sympathy for the devil came out in 94- 95 that was pretty much the nail in the coffin.

They just looked like a lot of egotistical wankers and people hated Axl really - similar view as in America with the grunge movements.

I will say one thing which might be pertinent. Britpop was a rejection of 'Americaness' (and this included grunge as well as Guns). Bands like Pulp, Oasis and Blur spoke about British themes and dressed like British ''mods'' so people could relate to them. Slash looking like a swaggery rock dinosaur and Axl with his multiple costume changes and big budget videos and teeth implants - well, how were the British people supposed to relate to this any longer?

Agree DD. I remember seeing a special about Britpop on ABC tv a few years ago and one woman who would have been early 40's and was probably a teen during Britpop ers said the reason why the bands like oasis was their generation was because the lyrics was a representation as to what young people in England were going through at the time. Whether it was about relationships or getting older or about life in general, the lyrics where a representation about what UK teens were going throughand those kids could relate to the bands so well.

So is there any truth to GnR becoming massively uncool by 1993 with teens when grunge was at it's peak in the US? I've had friends in the UK mention that GnR's fall from grace there was sudden - they became an uncool band soon after grunge hit there.

Post-grunge and alt rock were a subset of Grunge though - a lot of those bands mentioned were influenced either partially or completely by the Seattle movement. They're even sort of grouped together by streaming sites like Spotify.

GnR on the other hand are grouped with a lot of the shitty hair-metal acts of the day on Spotify which makes me wonder if their algorithm is weighted heavily on Appetite and less on Illusions.

As a teenager during this time period, I think by 94 is when people lost interest., the same would be said for metallica as well. In 93 the band where still on their Illusions tour so they still had a lot of interest. In 94 you had a lot of other grunge bands really making an impact, and other alt bands such as danzig, faith no more, heavier music by pantera/prong making an impact as well. I think Pantera were a lot in music magazines at that stage. So from memory between 94-96 grunge/alt rock was still making an impact. I think people lost interest in guns as by 93 they were well known for coming on late, riots and I think grunge/alt rock bands tended to treat the fans better. Such as coming on stage ontime and doing record store signings. Then you had other major artists like jeff bucklley as well. Brit-pop was big in Australia but that didn't start until 95 and Oasis was the leader of the pack.

  6. ' And it was not just the music. All the great things about that band were not there. I saw those guys in 1992 twice, they were 10 feet away from me, and there wasnt much left from the band i spent years watching and listening and adoring. What was left of it? Maybe Slash! Even fucked up he still played like an animal. But Axl... What the fuck happened to that guy? I am stilll baffled and I dont understand what happened. By 1992 (he actually showed signs of that in mid-1991) he started moving, sounding and looking like a fucking robot. Like a fucking malfunctioning clone of himself. Complete autopilot. Predictable. Boring. The exact opposite of who he was, who he used to be onstage. That guy, onstage, during GNR days, he seemed to have music going through him during the shows in the GNR days. It was all over by 1992. By then he became a performer or an entertainer or whatever you wanna call it. Very rarely he let loose like he used to do on GNR days. Very rarely he seemed to be "into" the songs. It was only on special occasions that he was "on", like when he played with members of Queen, Aerosmith etc.

I often wondered if it was his depression potentially being an issue. It was also during this stage when axl hired his sister and stepbrother to manage the backstage themed parties, so i just think axl went just plain nuts. Maybe management was in axls ear telling him one thing and maybe wanting axl to break away and do his own thing. Slash talks bout it in his book that all advice had to go through doug goldstein first and then 'massaged' before asking axl. He complained about going on the illusions tour because his head wasn't upto it, i think it could have been just mental issues axl was experiencing and the band/management probably didn't want to raise it and keep the band going and the money rolling in......except the band were pissing the money down the drain with their late appearances.

  7. having a look at the video for the first time, my own observations are the poor fans musn't have had any idea who or what members were going to come on stage. The internet wasn't mainstream back then so you couldn't go onto GNR website and have a look to see what band member was still in the band or not. So the poor crowds were probably thinking they were getting the 93 era band, that's if they hadn't kept upto date with what axl was doing in the media and if Slash was touring Snakepit part 2 back then. But I admit watching the show I would have thought whos the fuckin clown with the KFC bucket on his head and doing the nun-chucka moves, WTF is this?. Listening to Axls rant where the interpreter is also talking he was pissed off and sad with what happened to the old band, but you could tell he wanted to really move forward and he had the money, the record company backing to achieve this - really there are no excuses. His insecurities is what made him fail. But like most other forum posters here, he should have just got the monkey off his back in 01-02 and released whatever music he had whether that would be an album or an EP to test the waters. But he should have done it as a solo record. Releasing under the GNR name showed that he was relying on the name to help give the music profile to the fans and that's plain lazy. Theres no way this music is an extension of where guns musically were going. That's something we would never know because the band dynamics were at an all time low as far back as 96. If he released it as a solo move he probably would have gotten abit more respect and more favourable reviews and old getting part of the old band back together may have been more easier.

sweet child and patience (and even knocking on heavens door, that was in a Tom Cruise blockbuster movie Days of Thunder) brought them a huge mainstream audience long before november rain and whatever they did later.

    huge

anyone will tell you that sweet child o mine and patience (and, again, even knocking on heavens door) were among the most played songs on radio on the late 80s and 1990 (when GNR wasnt really doing much). believe me, it is very likely that every human being on the planet was exposed at least once to those songs durinng the 1988-1991 period.

These songs actrated pretty much very same audience that fell in love with November Rain much later.

Of course a zillions of kids who were too young in 1988-1991 only discovered GNR later and obviously NR (the song, the video) must have a huge impact on these people that discovered GNR post-illusions

that doesnnt change the fact that GNR was the biggest band in the world before the illusions were released.

Just check this shit in Brazil, pre-internet, seven months before the illusions were released

The early 90's I love was watching the music channel and seeing YCBM and watching Terminator 2 and hearing the song when the kids on the motorbike. T2 was a major movie back then, 7 or so years after the original. Good fuckin times!:headbang:

Which makes me ask the question what music video was released first November Rain or YCBM?

Just got up.  Here's some thoughts on last night's show :

     positive :

    - longer set and a couple of different songs compared to what I got in Werchter.

    - highlights for me were 'New Rose', 'Yesterdays', 'Coma', 'Sorry' (yeah, I know), 'Whole Lotta Rosie', ...  Not a coincidence that these are the 'rarer' songs, I don't need to hear 'LALD' or 'KOHD' ever again ...

    - Axl was in a really good mood, lotsa laughs, overall he sounded a lot better than in Werchter.  This might have been the first show since '93 where I actually enjoyed songs like 'November Rain', where his singing is usually cringe-worthy, it didn't sound all that bad today.  Don't get me wrong, he still sounds nothing like his former self, he still uses that ridiculous technique/voice, but at least it was listenable for this show.  He also looks a lot better than he has for the last decade, he now actually looks like a 55-year old version of Axl, and not so much like a fat Elvis-type thing.  If he'd lose more weight, and skipped some of the jackets/hats/whatever he'd be looking less like the jackass he's been for so long now...

    - better spot (golden circle) and better crowd than in Werchter, which was a festival crowd, full of drunk morons not interested in the band, talking to each other with their backs to the stage, being loud and obnoxious ...

    - I don't know where those clowns on this forum got the idea that the ticket sales for this show were a disaster, the crowd was massive, not sold out and not totally full, but this is an enormous stadium.

    - I was on the rail next to the PA tent, just next to Fernando (I think) and his TB entourage (Vanessa ?) in the tent, I laughed out loud when I saw that apparently, one of Del James' jobs is to escort Fernando 'Yoko Ono' Lebeis and his posse with a flashlight to and from the rest rooms !  What a job description, you really made your mark on the world man !

    - funny as hell that nobody gives a shit about the CD songs.  I looked around me during 'This I love', and I kid you not, the ONLY people singing along were the girls with Fernando in the tent.

    negative :

    - one things keeps on sticking out like a sore thumb, the worst part of this 'band' is the drummer.  God, it was awful.  This man has no place being associated with GNR.  He just doesn't have the skills to pull it off.  Maybe if he just stuck to playing the songs correctly, but no, he insists on adding 'his own touch' and manages to completely destroy classic, trademark fills and patterns.  What a disaster.  It really takes a lot of enjoyment away from seeing this show.  One of the worst mistakes they EVER made.  And they've made a lot.  If Steven is undependable, and Axl hates Sorum, they should've gone with Brent Fitz, at least he has the chops and plays the songs correctly.

    - Slash's playing and tone leaves a lot to be desired.  He was actually on top of his game again during his solo years, I saw him several times, best tone since the UYI tour and amazing guitar work, better than the Snakepit and VR years.  But now, his tone has degraded, seems like it has less distortion and less bite, it's not massive anymore like on the UYI tour.  He also misses a lot of notes, plays sloppy here and there, gets stuck in certain solos, improvises too much on established solos like 'Yesterdays' for example ... A shame.  (Oh well, as long as he doesn't drop to Finck-like sloppiness !)

    - after I came home from Werchter with a blank tape, now my recorder died during 'Paradise City' and my recording went with it.  That's two botched recordings in a row.  Hope I have more luck in Nijmegen.

    - stuck in traffic in the Lille area, missed the first two songs.  But since they have opened with the same songs for the last 400 years, guess that's not too bad.

    - had to pee for the first hour and a half, didn't want to ruin my recording by going to the bathroom with it, considered peeing in a bottle for a brief moment :) but then I couldn't take it anymore, and I left my recorder with the girl next to me, and snuck out during Fortus' bit in 'WYWH' !

    - It's time to skip the covers, the songs that are played to death ('LALD', 'KOHD', 'SCOM', ...) , the Fortus solos, reduce the number of AFD songs ... and add some real GNR deep cuts !

If Steven is undependable, and Axl hates Sorum, they should've gone with Brent Fitz, at least he has the chops and plays the songs correctly.

    Agree with this 1000%

Slash owned the Vegas shows last spring.  Esp with Axl in the chair, Slash really steppe dup and dominated.  Hard to imagine the clowns Axl used from '95-2015.  They couldn't hold a candle to Slash.  Even the CD songs sound pretty damn good with Slash.

for the guitarists that were in Axls version of guns n roses, slash was-is- and always will be  - the benchmark.

Have always seen slash solo when he has toured in Oz since 2010. He certainly is the star of the show and you can see when he plays with SKMC band that he gells with all of them and in his mind I think he feels hes happy to be playing with a bunch of muscians on his level - he's found the right group of muscians to help push his solo material. However I think GNR is different . I think he is serious as wanting his playing to say "axl this is what guns could have been if you didn't push the band members away". Its his way of putting a stamp on GNR at this point in time and for him I think Guns has always been a case of unfinished business not only for himself but for all of us. Those of us who loved the AFD/Illusions line up and yes I agree that certain old band members should be there except for Richard and frank. Frank just comes across as having no rock n roll swagger and just a drummer for hire.

It's clear they (Axl/Slash/Duff) all get along, although obvious that Slash/Duff are still the tightest.  The Slash/Beta thing is odd, but it bodes well for any GnR future.  Lets be honest- as Beta goes Axl goes.  GnR is more $$$$$, so most likely Beta will steer Axl that way.

Really pisses any fan off. If Beta could have talked some sense to Axl and seen the situation from a fans perspective we could have had axl and slash reconvene sooner. Instead of the nanny and her son getting into public spats with Slash when the whole situation is none of her business. Sorry to derail and otherwise good show review.

  12. Like everyone I hope for new music, but would have liked to have been a fly on the wall when axl invited slash to his place for dinner to originally discuss Coachella. Im sure when the whole tour started Slash and Duff thought about new music. Im sure Slash thinking ahead at axl's place for dinner would have thought and raised to axl if they all tour and its a success and if the band can last 12months or more with each other touring and not coming to blows, the question would be what next?. Could we possibly do new music or did Axl just think tour only and nothing more and say to duff and slash lets tour and see how we go. If the tour is a success lets then think about whether new music could be a possibility but lets get through the tour first. I think the reason why slash and duff have not given any indication of new music to allow them to get comfortable with the all whole band members and see if any future stuff feels right. If not then they can say "thanks for the tour and period of letting us play, its not the direction I want to take" . Slash and duff have lost nothing and have not given any fans the expectation of anything more than a tour and everyone can go their separate ways and back to their solo careers.

However I think the success of the tour for both slash and duff has given them a feeling of unfinished business. If they kept their heads together and separated after the illusions tour done a solo record and reconvened after a couple of years and see where their heads were at it could have been a different outcome. But with all of these guys feeling comfortable during the tour and enough time passing and now being more mature in their 50's and if being open to do new music then all they need is some sort of an outlet to test the waters. I just don't think any of the band wanted to commit until after the tour to assess whether they wanted to continue under Axls version of GNR depending on the success of the tour. I think new music in some shape and form is now a possibility, and we should know by November what the direction now is and something public advertised. When GNR played in Australia slash quote was "we'll be back soon" so im hoping it will be a tour with new music, I don't think they would do a NILT tour again, especially as Slash likes to tour and play new material.

Back then it was lucrative in the way that it was promoting the upcoming album using the biggest movie of that year... very smart marketing.. if they plan to release an album, they need the lead single featured prominently in a blockbuster movie.

well VR did that with the hulk movie so its not out of the question if GNR go down that path again.
