  1. What would you rather have? Axl going into retirement instead of a reunion tour? . I thought the retirement would happen first. After a lot of things that axl said about the old group (his nu version of guns is what should have originally been guns), slash is a cancer. I thought no matter how many dollars would have thrown at axl he would have said no, as accepting the reunion meant he has gone against everything he said and he would have looked like he sold out and more importantly meant that the effort he put into CD was just a waste of time.

See that's the thing, if we're going by actual songwriting credits - even Paul Tobias has more legitimacy to be given the rhythm guitar slot than Fortus. Fortus is a really skilled guitarist and can execute the vision of Axl and Slash, but can the guy bring anything substantial to the table creatively? Remains to be seen. He has the least influence on Chinese Democracy out of any of the players despite being in the band the longest aside from Tommy. Not the strongest endorsement of his skills.

Agree. Wondering if maybe richard was only hired as a touring guitarist only?. Considering he has been in the band for a while im sure hes brotched to axl if theres any room in the band for any songs he has written and whether axl may like them for any future release.

Just because Izzy was essential to the success of Appetite doesn't mean that they can't create an amazing album without him. I mean some of the best songs on UYI were written without any Izzy input.

No disrespect to Izzy and before I get a smh emoji response I know exactly what songs Izzy wrote/co-wrote and I love them. But he's not the be all and end all of GN'R. This line-up has the potential to do great things without him. But yes, it would be cool if he was also apart of this but it's not the end of the world if he isn't. Far from it.

I have no doubt that the three of them could put together a great album, maybe even a classic. The question here is, would that album be even better with Izzy involved? Ofcourse. Arguably the lack of enough Izzy involvement hurt the quality of UYI - this seems to be an opinion that has gained a following in recent years.

Then if there is new music,  richard and frank need to pony up and prove they can either write a song or have musical direction/input to create a song from scratch and not from one of the CD2 leftovers.... and it had better be good if not better than the songwriting of izzy if people feel we can do without izzy.

Axl leveraged enough power over the last 25 years that he is in a position to do what he wants.

If the AFD5 reunites, it's because he wanted it to happen.

If they don't, it's because he didn't want it to happen.

    The End.

completely agree. Im sure music people who interview the band will be asking this same question and I hope the gag order is off steven to tell the truth!.

If Axl is being honest with himself (and we are with ourselves), his career as an artist peeked in the 1986-1988 time frame.  How many of us would want to live with the fact that our professional high point was reached between 24 and 26 years old.  For this reason, I think he's been trying to bury that period and somehow reinvigorate his cultural relevance for years.  Getting on stage for over an hour with Steven and Izzy to play the entire AFD album isn't going to help his fragile psyche.

His songwriting hit its peak with the illusions stuff.

    Nice!

    Fascinating era..great documentary...

Every GNR fan should watch this.

Ah no. I have zero interest in the CD era, I wish we could go from 96 to 2015 and wipe out the CD era entirely. It proved to axl that people who were into CD were only going out of interest not because CD was better than AFD,Lies, Illusions material.

This thread is really making me wish Skid Row would reform.

So do I and im sure Seb does to. I know there was took in media sites that him and the other members of skid row were hashing things out, but I think Sebastian leaking to the media which pissed off the other guys and they kabooshed things straight away. Sebastian put out a press release saying he didn't care but im sure skid row would make a good pay day. Not as much as guuns are getting but more than what Sebastian would be making under his own name.

  7. they got on well and guns and skid row had history and both bands enjoyed touring together in the late eighties early ninties. Sebastian mentions it in his book that he had not seen axl in a lot of years and suddently they contacted each other around 2006 when axl started to make public appearances.  Sebastian made axl feel good to be out in the public eye again and seb never had an agenda with axl.

I wasn't gonna go to that show 'cause I had already seen Axl in 2010 and 2011 and felt I was disrespecting myself by going for a 3rd time to see the Chinese Democracy tour and supporting Axl's terrible use of the GNR name. Six days before the show it was announced that Duff was gonna be coming instead of Tommy and the next day I was buying my ticket to see him and Axl together.

It was a great show (Axl's band was always great IMO and I'm one of the few who doesn't hate DJ so even he wasn't a problem for me) and I never saw a bass so loud in the mix as that night. You could literally hear every single note Duff was playing and that was awesome, he owned every song, some that he hadn't played for decades and some that weren't even his. It was unreal!

Shackler's Revenge was definitely the worst part of the show, biggest moodkiller I've seen. People was overexcited, completely crazy and then that song started and the whole crowd shut down.

Richard did a really badass solo in his solo spot. As much as I don't see him as a great fit for the 2016/17 band, I think he was the MVP of THAT band.

As a side note, Axl got to the stadium pretty late as usual and so Ron came out to entertain the crowd and threw some picks while we were waiting. That was very nice of him.

The most disappointing thing was they played So Fine on the soundcheck but not on the show :max:

I'm not sure how much Duff had to do with Slash's return to be honest. He was VERY close to Izzy and he's not back in the band so it looks like good business had a bigger role in the reunion than Duff. I'm very happy to have him back nonetheless, the more original members there are in the band, the better!

Duff coming back was the start. This would have made Axl think with enough time that had gone by and with the public spats about slash (hes a cancer), made him think it was time to maybe bury the hatchet with slash. Hence the questions axl started to ask Duff about why slash said certain things duiring the time with the band and in slashs book, and duff explained to axl through slashs eyes why certain things happened and were said. This then from the interview axl and duff diid about axl calling slash and inviting him around to dinner . This could all be wishful thinking or Axl coming to a point that he can only tour CD so much and was probably becoming bored around the 2013 timeframe with the whole CD touring. You can only ignore the truth for so long which was if guns had to move forward it was time to swallow some pride and reconnect with the other members of GNR that made the band as good as they were and he would have known there would be plenty of dollars to be made....if he was willing to compromise with how to progress with a reunion and raising to duff and slash what he could accept (main band players plus those in current GNR axl would consider loyal) and what he couldn't accept ( stevens possible unpredictability -  im sure those bad feelings still run deep for whatever reason).

The thing about Axl is he seems genuinely caring. It might manifest itself in him calling the band drug addicts on stage because he's concerned about it or him cutting someone out of his life because he felt they wronged him somehow but the guy cares, for better or worse.

What stood out to be in Duff's book was Axl coming to visit him and wanting to do sober things like biking, trying to be supportive. And then years later, in 2010 when they go out for dinner, ordering a virgin whatever it was, to not drink in front of Duff.

that surprised me the most was how axl was when duff and axl reconvened in 2010 from duffs book. It makes me wonder if Axl was ready for a reunion or was seriously thinking about it by this time. The garb axl wore from 2002 onwards is pretty forgettable , though 2006 is not to bad - just never liked the braids and oversized shirt like he was trying to be eminem. Its now that he is wearing the clothes appropriate for his age.
