While I like Gilby, for sentimental reasons, I wouldn't really say he's charismatic. Really, they could have put anyone in his position. Still prefer him over Fortus though.

As you like Gilby too, I will explain you very easily.

Back in the day, in about every country you had like 10 magazines coming out on daily basis with GNR members on the cover or GNR posters inside (I didn't even get to mentioning fanzines that you could buy at any airport in US, Europe, Australia...).  Being a MEGA fan, before every flight I popped in at a news stand and I clearly remember there were shelves full of different magazines and 10 had GNR as cover story.

Now, about weekly, Gilby was on the cover of at least one with GNR sign or his poster was inside along with others.  I remember tons of Gilby interviews with Gilby under GNR moniker.   Now that is a huge difference compared to podcast where they mention Fortus as a GNR guitar player.    That being said, everyone who just vagualy followed music knew every band member from every band by heart.

People slept in front of record stores to get records at midnight....People  stayed up globally to watch Rio '91, Paris '92....People made thir plans for the month around Paris gig, waited for weeks for Tokyo vids...

It is different times.  Not 1% of the people from the 90's know who Fortus is.  Probably not 50% don't even know Slash and Duff reunited with Axl.

I never saw a magazine with Fortus under GNR moniker, furthermore, nobody outside of Slash/Duff/Axl circle is allowed publicly to be labeled as 'GNR'.  Far less ppl listen to podcasts than that read the  magazines in the 90's.  Podcasts are at around cople of thousand at best.  I mean, with all due respect to Brando and his work, how many listeners does he have?  And I don't mean to be rude to Brando in any shape or form, just respect to all his work he did in all these years.

There are far more ppl today today who think Gilby still plays in the band than the ones who know there is some dude Fortus  Even the bow they take...First everyone, then just the 3.

Ppl today don't stay up to see Rio, Buenos Aires or whatever.  It is different times where ppl remember the ones from the past but the new stars are not created.

Aside from that, the charisma topic..Gilby and his cowbay hats, fit far better with Slash and Duff and their images than shirtless Fortus.  Fortus looks like he ran out of some EMO band.

He's still just a hired touring hand without any creative inputnor say whatsoever. Which after 19 years makes his existance even sadder. Other then concerts he got nothing really to show for and it could be over any day. Would be, if they weren't too cheap to pay Izzy what he wanted.

I'm sorry, but Gilby is not important either. He may be a sentimental favourite, but other than that he's on the same level as Fortus.

I was not talking individually, but about majority.

Gilby played when the band ruled the world,  Not to mention Gilby waaaas way more charismatic than 4tus ever will be...

  3. let's be honest, the level of importance in GNR

    1. slash

    2. Izzy

    3. Gilby (as Iz's imminent replacement)

Everyone else, just one of the double diggits in the revolving door band.  what importance or level of remembering does a replacement of a replacement of a replacement of a replacement have!?

Jizz Da Pit on IFOCS, I think.

    Axl called it "Red Neck".

hmmmmm...I would not call Jizz southern rock, don't know what Slash demoed by that time, but I would think that Neither can I, maybe Beggars and hangers on were more i that direction.  Although in general I really can't hear much of southern rock there and I am hard core GNR and The Black Crowes (who are pretty much souhern rock) fan

True, I was referring to their heroin addictions. Slash stopped using but continued to drink heavily. And I assume he was still doing coke, maybe someone who read his book could answer that.

Slash was using on and off all the way into Snakepit 2.  Up to the point he had that tour cancelled and had a defibrilator

I do agree but they, meaning Slash and Izzy compared to Steven, were at different points in their addictions. Slash and Izzy were starting to pull out of it as where Steven was spiraling. They were at such a crucial point as a band that they felt they couldn't continue with Steven. It's a question of bad timing for Steven to be at his worst.

i'd say they were on 3 different levels

    Izzy became sober

Slash was always workable, he was a user but never allowed usage to get in his way to the point he couldn't play.

Adler was a wreck and Duff  not too far but also workable

  7. I know Slash always remembers, also never fails to wish HB Izzy, Gilby, Matt...Basically, we can say he is in good terms with them, now for GNR, I don't remember they ever wished Adler HB but could be wrong...

Reunion is inevitable, for that is te trick Axl pulls when tix sales soar.  Is now the word? Possible.   That Australian skull poster was quiet odd too

I dont  think TBC southern music........album would not have sounded good without Marcs contributions had he have joined guns.

Well..TBC had that southern rock vibe/sound on all their albums, it was their trademark, both on the albums before Marc and after him, that depended much more on Robinson brothers, it would have probably not sounded same as it did, how it would - it is up in the stars

  9. I did know about Marc Ford earlier, but not even I (as ahuge Gunner and TBC fan) knew this.

If I did, I would have asked Rich about it earlier, will do next time and will write here what he says.

As for Marc, yes, UYI band would have been an interesting fit for him, but Nu Guns had 0 to do with rock and him being rock or blues rock guitarist I just don't see how he would have fit in that band.

Izzy wasn't GNR, he was one member of GNR and he helped write / wrote a lot of songs. If Izzy was GNR then his solo material would be far more well known.

If we're going to talk about single members of the band as 'GNR' then the only point that stands up is brand value and that's Axl or Slash, preferably both together. Most people on the street with GNR t-shirts don't know who wrote the verse riff to this song or that song, they barely know any member outside of the singer and lead guitarist.

Izzy was clearly important to GNR though, but let's not overplay things! If he was still in the band now he'd probably be relegated to the Brad Whitford role 'Rarely heard from and quite unknown'.

As for Gilby...Gilby gets a buy through from people because he was on an iconic tour with the band and he appeared in a few videos. I like him, I liked him in the band but he isn't any better or worse a fit than Fortus. Personally I'd be happy to see Gilby back in the band, I'd prefer Izzy! but I'm also just fine with Richard... even if he has said a few dickish things in recent interviews.

Iz was GNR, as is Slash/Axl/Duff/Adler.

Matt/Dizzy/Gilby could be considered GNR in a way too, as one replaced the one leaving on his own terms and the other replacing founding member who was unable to play on, after that it became a replacement of a replacement of a replacement.

Gilby fit the band perfectly not only playing but also image wise check ie. Ashba, Bucket, Robin....

  11. over the years there were a lot of ppl who heard that the relationship between Slash/Duff and the hired guns was not all roses.

then there were some pro Frank minorities who got really offended, up to the point they couldn't get over that and even banned ppl who were not to keen on Frank for 'where is your proof'.

Well here is something that I don't recall being discussed here, from Fortus himself.   Enjoy!
