They could play major shows in New York, London, Berlin...film a music video...play on television....do something on YouTube...promote the album...call Buckethead...thousands better things to do than playing to a bunch of fashion people calling it a "secret gig". Surprisingly, the band can NOT ignore the laws of time and space and play ath the same time on five continents. So they have to start somewhere and then work ther way round the globe. They are for the Band, friends, family and a few lucky people. You are getting pics, video and reviews the same as any other show. What the hell more do you want? As far as I know the band loves to play, ie the two and a half hour to three hour sets. I don't think they care if they are playing in front of 50 people or 50,000. They play for the music. The CBGB show might have been done as a favor to a friend and just because it was a historic venue they did it, but when I read the tequila company sponsored the show, then there was prob. a lot of money involved. I would never criticize GNR if they played a "corporate gig" if they did it just like any other show they play at. Been to the Southern Comfort Experience shows, which were free to the audience - what if GNR played those shows? They get paid the same as if they were playing anywhere else, no one would censor what he said or did, plus it opens the door for all sorts of people to see them, and people have more money to spend there on T-shirts and concessions. I wouldn't hold it against them. How is that stupid? They're in a high end hotel,AND LOTS of models around NYC this week. It might be a little too "exclusive" but it wasn't like the audience didn't want to be there. The typical "corporate gig" show comes across as the band as background music .That's not the case anymore. The biggest bands in the world do it, even Bob Dylan isn't above taking a paycheck to play a corporate show. McCartney played an anniversary to some wealthy couple in San Diego for an easy million. Just him and a piano, for 20 minutes, all expenses paid, to a "crowd" of 20. Sometimes these make their way into the bootleg circles. All the bands that play Dubai - serious money being made. I know in Vegas, when there's a party in someone's name, like Paris Hilton or Kim Kardashian, they make at least 6 figures just to make a 15 minute appearance.
