Axl as he's aged compared with Robert Plant

I thought it would be fun to compare Axl at different points of his career with Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin.

Axl Rose, age 21 (1983):

Robert Plant, age 21 (1969) -

Commentary: Both singers are pure youth and energy.

Axl Rose, age 26 (1988):

Robert Plant, age 27 (1975): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ML1rYz3d5c

Commentary: Both singers have great control of their voices here after a few years of touring. This is their prime.

Axl Rose, age 31 (1993):

Robert Plant, age 31 (1979):

Commentary: Both singers are powerhouses at this point. Ironically, both Led Zeppelin and the original lineup of GNR would have their last shows when their singers were 31 years of age.

Axl Rose, age 37 (1999):

Robert Plant, age 37 (1985):

Commentary: Heyyyyyyyyyy they both sound like shit here. Plant trying to salvage his voice in the first unofficial Zeppelin show since John Bonham's death in 1979, and Axl struggling to belt out one of GNR's classic hits in his first studio material to be released since GNR's breakup.

Axl Rose, age 44 (2006):

Robert Plant, age 44 (1992):

Commentary: Both singers have regained their craft here. Axl struggles on a few notes, and Plant doesn't challenge his range miuch, but they have regained control that was lost in the years prior.

Axl Rose, age 50 (2012):

Robert Plant, age 50 (1998):

Commentary: Plant has a voice here that rivals his prime and perhaps surpasses it. Axl is holding back for some reason, as there's not much power behind his voice.

You would have to have 5-10 snapshots of each singer from different venues each given year to judge properly, to be honest.

However, the post is respecting the fact that voices do change over time, and that is respectful.

Led Zeppelin did a reunion concert in London, and I was there.

Robert Plant was 59 for that, and the band had to tune all the songs down a step because Plant didn't want to (couldn't?) sing them in the original key.

Is that in Axl's future - Welcome to the Jungle....downtuned? -

There are lots of circa 50 year-old singers out there that are still in their prime vocally, like Jon Bon Jovi, Bryan Adams, Anthony Kiedis and many others... Age is not an excuse for Axl, it's something else...

Jon Bon Jovi?! Prime?!

:rofl-lol:

Have you heard Jon in the last decade? He sounds so nasal it's ridicilous, he's lost all power and he's become incredibly annoying to listen to.

Robert Plant pretty much blew out his voice before he reached thirty. Pulled too much chest. His voice has never been the same and by no means does he rival his prime right now.

That said, I love Robert Plant and would love to see him live. I'm a big Zeppelin fan.

neither is bruce dickinson, because he's just so great it's not fair to compare.

:rofl-lol: Too true.

Off these videos, and my obvious bias, Axl easy wins all but 99 and 12. Man, his 88, 93, and 2006 voices were so fucked. Vicious, menacing, evil almost, powerful, screechy, raw, terribly un-professional sounding in the most professional way.

Sorry to put a negative spin on this but shit... 2012 Axl is baaaaad but 1998 Robert looks like he's about 70 haha

You can't compare Axl really with anyone!!! And for that matter compare one vocal style to another.

There is not one singer that sings with rasp, high end, low end and those screams and being able to change for each in a split second there is just no one out there that has all of that, and that gives the singer alot to live up to over time.

I think he is holding back on some songs or vocally to save his voice. Yet here lately he seems to be letting go alot more that on the North American tour.

Can you count on one had who sings like Axl and then pick popular vocalist and I bet you get alot more that sound like them.

Axl couldn't sing to standard tuned guitars when he was YOUNG, let alone now lol. But that's not a knock on him. Some people just have lower voices than others.

It all depends on the style you sing and HOW you sing.

There are exceptions in the rock world like John Farnham and Paul Rodgers who seem to defy time itself, but that is because they are so technically proficient. Most rock singers scream instead of sing, which eventually burns you out.

Anthony Kiedis? You have to be joking. http://stadium-arcadium.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=27087&sid=a45c4b270f8b76d532ab30d9bab7a1f8

He's the reason they invented auto tune. He does put on a great great great show - but you aren't seriously saying he's a great singer, unless you are being sarcastic and saying that he's still in his prime, because he was never in his prime.

At least Plant doesn't run around as "Led Zep" or "Nu Zep". He kept it classy as kept the integrity/legacy of Zep intact vs being a total joke.

He actually had such integrity and respect for the music that even though it was "just" the drummer that died they ended the band. Really, as legendary as Bonham has become, they could have continued and had a few successful albums at least. They didn't, though, and now Zeppelin are in the highest notch of rock stardom. GNR would be there if it ended in 1994 definitively instead of a slow long death and a half re-birth that lasted way too long.

I'm not saying Anthony is a GREAT singer, just that he stayed in incredible shape and his voice is pretty much sounding the same as ever.

Now about Jon Bon Jovi....one more guy in his 50's in great physical shape and saying that he lost his (great) voice is ridiculous since I've been to a live show just last year and he sounds great. OK maybe not exactly like in 1985 but still pretty good and definitely better than Axl of '11-'12 era...

That's why CD should've been released as a new band's album. Would've worked better off for everyone, IMO.
