The James Bond Thread: RIP Robbie Coltrane

James Bond

Guy Ritchie is apparently in the running to direct, but I'll take that with a grain of salt. Logan also said in a new interview that he will likely stick with the tone of Skyfall because he feels it captures enough Fleming while staying true to what audiences expect from a Bond film. I like this guy!

About to watch On Her Majesty's Secret Service, because I trust Georgy.

Do it! Georgy is a good cardinal.

Won't be disappointed. One of the finest Bond films.

She might be if she can't get by George Lazenby's amatuer acting but I felt he was natural at some things. It is pretty cool if it is going to be her first Jame Bond.

Logan is awesome. Which Purvis and Wade would come back.

Where do you get the info that Guy is in the running?

Seems like pure speculation. Look at some of the other apparent names. James Cameron and Martin Scorcese?

I'd go see a Scorcesse Bond film purely out of intrigue. I'd outright skip a James Cameron Bond film.

I don't necessarily think Scorsese would do a bad job, but I doubt they'd ever even consider him and it's also unlikely he'd do it. You never know. A Cameron Bond? If it's Terminator 2 Cameron I might consider it.

Wyatt is an interesting choice, but I don't think his resume is quite enough for them to consider him. Definitely someone to keep in mind for the future though. The only time they've gone with a small resume director was John Glen who had never directed a film, but he kind of moved up the ranks from editing to the second unit and so on. Peter Hunt too in that case.

No, I'd even pass on a T2-era-Cameron Bond film. For fuck's sake, he has continuity errors within the same sentence in T2. It's a great action flick, but he should get his shit together. And admit he fucked up when people call him out on his mistakes - not blame it on "time travel".

But we'd have John Logan taking care of the script. ;)

As far as pure directing goes, if we got a T2/True Lies Cameron then I think it'd be doable - provided Cameron doesn't alter the script of course. Still, we'll never see him direct Bond anyways.

I still vote Martin Campbell. Screw somebody new. Campbell guarantees a good film.

I don't think Logan was solely responsible for Skyfall's quality. A big part of that was Mendes, Purvis & Wade. The cast too, especially Craig. Campbell might be good, he seems to find his mojo with James Bond. GoldenEye was the best Brosnan film and Casino Royale was a successful reboot.

Skyfall seemed largely collaborative, but Logan was indeed a factor so having him on board for the script if Purvis and Wade are out is a good thing rather than somebody completely new. Purvis and Wade just wanted a break. Maybe they figured they gave Skyfall their all and are drained of ideas. Mendes is the biggest loss.

Luckily though, we had a lot established in Skyfall. Whoever directs has a new M, Q, and Moneypenny and the rest of the formula set up to go with Logan fine tuning the plot and script with likely influence from Daniel and the producers. No writer's strike either. That's enough to at least guarantee a good film, regardless of if it tops Skyfall or not. With all that material, Campbell could no doubt work his magic again. Campbell would also mean we'd get some more of the usual crew like David Arnold, Daniel Kleinman, and so on. He's pretty open to what the producers want too.

He's pushing 70, but I don't see that being a problem. Michael Wilson is up there too.

They have a great crew too. Mendes has never directed an action film and he gives a lot of credit for the crew and second units for the incredible action sequences in Skyfall. He admitted he had no idea what he was doing. Sad to see him go, he is a great filmmaker and he has very little ego. Campbell seems to fit in well. They have everything they need for Bond, Campbell would have more a challenge in Casino Royale when he is expected to direct a reboot. Basically not do what he did in GoldenEye.

Michael has been around a long time. Barbara is still young though, at least looks it. I don't believe they are showrruners like Cubby and Harry, it wasn't until Casin Royale they seemed to find their footing. I think it will be a long time before we know more about The Brosnan Age like we do about the Connery to Dalton years.

Barbara was born in 1960 I think, so she's got plenty more years with Bond. When Michael retires from it I could see his son stepping up. He's done some small work on the last few films I believe.

I agree about Campbell and Casino - his job was to establish a new Bond in a film that would reboot the series. Definitely a challenge. Come to think of it, that's basically what he had to do with GoldenEye too. Both times he nailed it. Now everything is in place so there would be less pressure and it'd be a walk in the park in comparison.

Thinking of it that way, no wonder he felt so exhausted after both films.

Campbell is called whenever they need someone to bring everyone up to speed. Bond 24 would be his first normal Bond film. His only challenge would to be make it as big of a success as Skyfall. Skyfall has set the bar high. What has Michael's son done? Does Babara have any kids? We should take over.

I know James Bond has been making a presence at Comic Con over the past few years, they had the QoS car there and had some stuff for the Bond 50 last year, but don't know if they had anything planned this year.

There prob. should be some sort of Fleming/Bond museum by now, they must have warehouses of props, outfits, manuscripts, etc.

Best Bond themes that do not match the title of the movies?

The following themes:

Nobody Does It Better

All Time High

You Know My Name

Another Way to Die

We Have All the Time in the World

Are you asking which is the best song, or which is best at not matching the title/film?

My vote would be You Know My Name, with Nobody Does It Better second.

Count me in for us producing. There'd be zero conflicts. We seem to all agree.

Georgy - Michael's son has been involved since GoldenEye. He did some tech behind the scenes stuff. Since Casino Royale he's been "Assistant Producer" or some similar credit. I don't think Barbara has kids or has been married.

I'm surprised they don't have a Bond museum. Instead of Bond props going to private collectors it'd be nice to collect them together for fans to see.

About to watch On Her Majesty's Secret Service, because I trust Georgy.

Do it! Georgy is a good cardinal.

I watched it and I loved it. It's the first James Bond film I ever watch so I can't say if it's one of the best or not but I thought it was brilliant. (Now I gotta watch others). I don't know why I always thought I wouldn't like this kind of movies... but I was wrong. Thanks Georgy for the recommendation!

Really witty script and dialogues, with sarcastic moments and awesome action scenes. PLus there are really nice moments such as the scene in the beginning when he saves Tracy and when she dies.

I really enjoyed it.

I don't know the rest but We have all the time in the world really suits the film. It doesn't match the title, ok, but it's perfect for the movie!!

Glad you enjoyed it! If you're gonna watch more/all of them, I'd recommend starting with Dr. No and going somewhat in order. That, or watch one film from each Bond, to get a sampling of what each actor is like ;)

On the topic of the non-title themes, my list best to worst:

You Know My Name

We Have All The Time In The World

Nobody Does It Better

Another Way To Die

All Time High
