Axl n Gilby ?

Axl didn't like what he was hearing with what Slash and Gilby were coming up with. He wanted Slash to work with Paul instead. Thats all that I remember. I don't even remember if Gilby then quit because he wasn't going to be able to work on the record or if he got fired. I think he just walked away knowing that there was nothing for him left to do? I think his only chance was to maybe tour again which was nowhere in site at that point. Also when Slash decided not to hang around with Axl, Gilby went with Slash to start Snakepit.

There is no logic behind disliking Gilby Clarke. He filled Izzy's role, at worst competently, at best, with some inspiration - with a nice Stonesy technique. You look at Finck who has a fanbase here: bumnotes and off key meanderings prevail. You look at Ashba: the guy simply can not play guitar. Gilby: never, bumnotes, all solid. The guy did the role. He performed this role on a colossal stage, namely the Illusion tour, making a valid contribution to such events as the Paris PPV. He played well on TSI. He put out a solo album which was head and shoulders above what Duff and Slash put out during a similar period. He was treated like a sack of shit, by W. Axl Rose. He has continued to put out solid albums, play decent club shows and other things. You can literally not find a more innocuous guy than, Gilby Clarke. The fact people here hate him is proof that GN'R fans are mental.

Couldn't have said it any better myself. He walked into a situation that was completely out of control, on very short notice, and did a really great job. Played well live, with very little rehearsal time, in front of much larger crowds than he'd ever seen before, meshed with his bandmates, and had good stage presence. Definitely brought a Stones-y vibe to the group, and Pawnshop Guitars may still be the best solo album any of 'em put out.

Even those who look at everything through "rose-coloured" glasses can see that even Axl didn't hold a grudge. Gilby was the first guy he re-connected with in '99. Gilby rocks.

I agree with your points on Gilby. Tbh I couldn't really hear Gilby the majority of the time he was in the band. I agree he is relatively innocuous, but that's not really what I'm looking for in my rock n roll. I disagree on Robin, I don't really hear all these bumnotes you speak of- and when I really think about it I think he played in the tighest incarnations of the band, but I suppose he was a bit loose, but that was kind of the point- he was filling the Slash role... and you listen to the band early on-Slash was all over the place. The hype saved some of those performances from being complete disasters.

You have just described a boring, forgettable guitarist and that is precisely what Gilby is. Does anyone really 'hate' him? It'd be like hating rice or a light breeze.

Yes, because Stonesy blues licks are 'boring'. It is much better to have guitarists which go hysterically out of tune and key like Finck and Cashba. 'Arty', you see?

Stonesy blues licks are not boring. Gilby is boring cause he doesn't do anything interesting with his guitar and doesn't have anything interesting to say imo.

You're a big Izzy fan. Can't you hear the difference between the real deal and some shitty, artistically hollow guitar player like Gilby? yep.

Almost all guitarists of Clarke's generation are into Stonesy blues licks, so yes, they are boring - especially since he adds nothing to them.

And I never said he wasn't a better player than Ashba

Have you been at any of the 92 or 93 shows? Gilby moved on stage a lot and had great chemistry with Slash. With more charisma than Izzy. Sure when it comes to songwriting skills and talent he might not be what GN´R needs. But on stage he was far from being boring or bad. I take Gilby over Paul Tobias any day.

Yeah, Gilby was the perfect fit for 90's GN'R. But imo Tobias' songs on CD are very good, even if he isn't a good guitar player his songwriting skills are great and seem to fit with Axl's style. Still, it would have been great to see Gilby composing with Axl, it's a shame that Axl didn't want to

I wasn't talking about his stage presence. It was pretty good. He was a decent choice for a touring member. Other then that though, not good enough imo.

How the fuck would you know? I've read somewhere that if you took pawnshop guitars and combined that with its 5 O'clock, you'd have the direction guns were heading; both albums would completely blow the doors of Chinese Democracy with Axl singing. So don't tell me what a shitty songwriter he is when he never was given a chance.

What is he meant to add? He filled Izzy's Stonesy rhythm role when GN'R needed it. He was never given a chance by Axl to put forth his songwriting ideas. He is a bloody rhythm guitarist in a band with two of the biggest personalities to grace a rock band.

Songwriting, nobody knows whether or not he was 'good enough' considering he was never given a choice to strut his stuff by Axl and was replaced by a Yoko Ono character. Cure Me and Kill Me and Tijuana Jail are head and shoulders above Chinese Democracy and would have made great GN'R songs.

It's not any rock guitarist role to wait for their chance to prove themself. They have to get up in your face and show they can hack it. He failed.

Bullshit. Nobody but Axl wanted to even sack Gilby, nor were even consulted on the decision, so he presumably did 'show' he could 'hack it' to the majority of the band.

"After a few months during which everyone did their own thing and we got nothing done when we met, Axl fired Gilby without consulting anyone." (Slash, Autobiography)

"Gilby didn't deserve that kind of treatment - especially when he covered our ass so we could complete the world tour when Izzy quit." (Slash, Kerrang, 01/95)

Slash was even recording demos for a future Guns N' Roses album with him at the time. The sacking of Gilby was pure Axl, wanker-type behaviour.

I don't give a fuck what the band (who were likely just glad that the newcomer was in no danger of overshadowing them) think. I'm talking about the fans, numbnuts. He never made an impression on them. Ever.

Not sure I agree. He had a stage persona, slightly more active than Izzy, and seemed to come across well in interviews. I do not know what you expect him to do more? Increase his guitar heroics? He was not brought into the band to fulfill that role.
