I'd guess both will appear at the final show in LA whenever that is.  Or maybe sooner if Live Nation thinks there's money to be squeezed from a tour billed as the AFD 5.

I believe that would have been the case sans the constant touring. That’s definitely something that can be fruitful in the not-so-distant future as long as there is a long time off from touring. It would be cool to see those 5 guys play Appetite all the way through, I’m sure there’s a contingent of fans willing to pay a premium for that.

Fortus was on both “Hard Skool” and “Absurd” right? I think he confirmed as much when someone asked what guitar he used for the recordings. I’m sure he recorded other parts for songs in his studio too. That’s not him being vague or a yes man. He simply answered a question. That music will were be released, unfortunately.

Nah, he is being vague and rightfully so(he obviously cares about his job). He knows exactly what was being asked of him. I think his response points to the inner turmoil he probably feels about the entire situation. No matter what optics you are using to judge his response, the results are always the same…….

Statements made by band members (including Axl) and those associated with the band who heard/possessed material have said otherwise.

The 2008 album didn't contain all of the A listed songs that were completed at the time. The follow-up was planned to be released shortly after the 2008 album. They wouldn't and didn't put all their best eggs in the first basket.

I still need to see that. Thank you

I understand all these points and they have been accounted for in my sentiments. I have had this conversation in some capacity with some various GNR forum luminaries from the past. My “theories” also include conversations and email/Facebook exchanges I’ve had with artists. The consensus being lack of completed material.

there was a complete album who was ready to launch just before Slash & Duff rejoined, so yes, that was the plan. then, the reunion happened, which I'm pretty certain you're ok with, and plans changed. plus, we had 3 years of pandemic, it didn't help to accelerate things.

There was never a complete album “ready to launch” outside of CD which DID launch. What there was, was a retroactive excuse, just like the pandemic being an excuse of why material could not be released. If looking for excuses why things did not happen, there’s plenty of them in GNR. But the reason why things didn’t happen fall solely on Axl.

There may be enough material presently to fill an album but it would be an album of essentially all B sides. In other words, an album full of B and C level material. And I’m more than certain Axl is very well aware of this. I tend to believe that Axl never pulled off all the vocal recordings that he needed to complete all those tracks. Outside of the tracks overdubbed by Slash and Duff, there is nothing else in the wings that will ever see the light of day.

But you argued that he didn't have "musical intervention". The collaborative process of making CD, including bandmates helping him decide on the setlist (and including This I Love), suggests otherwise.

Sorry my friend, but CD’s release demonstrates that there was a lack of intervention. It’s just not very good. I’ve tried to come to terms with it over the decade+ since it was released. However, it never gets any better.

Axl doesn't really make songs on his own. Chinese Democracy was full of songs with multiple writers that had provided "musical intervention" to Axl's songs. And I think quite a few of the songs on CD had all the elements needed to make them great songs.

Axl has the final say. The material that got through was the result of Axl’s executive decision making, don’t confuse the fact that Axl was offered up material from other members that ultimately was incorporated into the final product as cooperation and creative collaboration.

It was basically Axl directing all the shots and either including or passing on this material. He had an entire vault of ideas at his disposal. He valued his vision above all else and ran with it. He didn’t have anyone who was a voice of reason he could listen to or would listen to. I believe that’s still may be the case.

Seems like it. I get the feeling as well that they thought the masses would go crazy about Absurd and HS, just because it's the big three. Might have been a rude awakening. :D

The fact that Axl is so attached to B and C level material is a greater indicator of what exists and the likely overall quality of it. Having said that, I would be fine with a release of any of it.

I just don’t believe Axl posses the musical acumen to complete one track of Appetite-Illusions quality material if he remains at the helm. Without some musical intervention, the songs will be lacking elements that are needed while possessing an over abundance of what is not. And I just don’t believe he is capable of making those executive decisions solely.

Yeah, I also don't think's a coincidence that Fernando stopped communicating with fans here and on Reddit after the Hard Skool flop. He only ever checked in during times when there was something to sell (after Locked and Loaded in 2018 and to announce the Hard Skool physical release in 2021). The fact that they released it on not only vinyl but cassette leads me to believe that Team Brazil overestimated the number of hardcore GNR fans left. Once they realized that they peaced out.

HS was supposed to usher in the “new chapter” in GNR. Unfortunately, they decided to burn the book.

Anyone remember that single Slash said was coming in a few months like 6 months ago? Fun times.

That was likely the initial  idea as Slash suggested they would release the material that was leftover from the CD sessions.

I’m of the opinion that with limited exceptions, it’s the only material that was “complete” including all necessary vocals. Obviously lack of interest in HS put a damper on these sort of piecemeal releases.

Many (including myself) feel the mixing and mastering on the two tracks are bad. Compare it to any song on the 2008 album, or even a Village "rough mix" from a sound quality standpoint. The songs are too loud, the instruments and at times even vocals are not balanced. Frank's drums on Hard Skool have an awful effect on them making it sound almost like a drum machine, the guitars are loud and overpowering, especially on Absurd and the drums are too low on that track as well.

This was a discussion we had some years ago on another forum focused around Marco Beltrami. But as the discussion progressed there’s more focus on the layers of sound that were recorded into the CD tracks. Anyway it’s an interesting read for those who care.

Not only can I guarantee this band will not record and release an album of new songs ...

100% you will never see a Chinese Democracy boxset containing all recorded '98-'08 material ...

If it's not leaked, that shit is going to the grave with Axl

I would say a lot of the material recorded in that era no longer exists. Much of what was recorded musically is more consistent with Axl’s interest in creating and adopting musical scores. In essence a great amount of music that was recorded was layers of sounds and instrumental arrangements of various degrees of complexity.

I believe the bulk of which Axl has destroyed for various reasons. I think this scorched Earth mentality falls in line with a man unwilling to release anything he deems unfit. I agree, most of these recordings will never see the light of day.

Imagine how many other completed songs exist that Axl doesn't intend on releasing.

Years ago, a hoarder (@card5777, I believe) claimed to have at least 12 songs that he was told Axl was against releasing in any form. I'm curious if we got any of those from the Village leaks.

There were many “hoarders” on here years ago who would come here to pontificate, but nothing materialized (guns4tea). I’ve spoken to MSL as well over the breadth of hoarded songs. In reality, most of this was just a ruse to get material from “real hoarders”. How much really exists? Probably a lot less than you think, certainly far less than you are hoping for.

I paid about the same for my ticket to see them next month, but I have a good seat in the lower bowl. For reference, I also paid about 300 after fees for GNR tickets in the lower bowl in 2016-17. Unfortunately that's become a normal price for a stadium show.

I'm excited for the RHCP show though, their newest album is really good. I'm hoping they play Eddie and Carry Me Home.

Carry Me Home is great. My favorite track is Bella. Great band live though I wish their sets would go a bit longer. For the money I’d rather see them over GNR or Metallica.

Slash specifically said that the epic songs he worked on don't have the same history as Hard Skool, which could simply mean that Hard Skool dates to the mid 1990s, not necessarily that the others won't come from the Village sessions.

This is exactly right. He was specifically speaking about Hard Skool and that “history” applies to it.
