Back on topic... I've long wondered if the lead guitar we can hear on the 2010 cell phone recording of The General is Robin or Bucket. I initially felt it was Robin, but, if The General is a song Brain came up with, I feel like he would have been jamming with Bucket then they were having chicken, or does Bucket not eat chicken?

This isn't to say Bucket didn't have some presence on the recording, but I'd bet a bucket of chicken that the solo on the cellphone clip was Robin.

I figure you would be very curious to hear how the real deal stack up, aren't you?

Very much so, but with medium-to-low expectations for the placement accuracy of the blurry, deformed and mutilated puzzle pieces I forced together. I'm not nearly as interested in the lyrics as much as I am curious about the vocal melody.

Your version of Silkworms was awesome! Always liked Madagascar (Danube) too.

Your version of The General is ridiculously impressive, but I think people who are basing their expectations off it might be setting themselves up for disappointment or frustration.

Thanks, and I totally forgot about Danube - wonder if I still... yep. Wow, not bad.

You're absolutely right about people setting themselves up for disappointment, and I hope they don't. Strangely, if it is completely different than I expect, it won't bug me at all.

It brought a lot of joy to people, your work on Silkworms too! I’m looking forward to comparing your version to the real one. Crazy this is happening

Me too, ZoSo. Me too. Funny, f'ing Silkworms from Rio '01 is the track that got me interested in editing audio. I probably put more effort into that than any other mix over the years, starting way back in 2002-ish.

Hey Evader!  Good to see you around these parts.  I myself do want to emphasize, I have always thought your work on your version of The General, especially using the vocal stems to make a cohesive melody line in one key, was super impressive and it sounds fantastic

And any points I made here in this thread were in no way a judgement call on the quality and effort of your work on that audio - my points have always been more just that, since the cell phone clip's quality is so bad, there is only so much we can gleam from it with actual 1:1 recreations of the actual song, so that means using what little can be heard, injected with one's own imagination are probably how I figured you made it

And I wanted to make the overall point that as cool as your version is, it is hard to make a judgement call on the quality of the actual song without hearing the full audio of the real thing

Hello there, and no sweat about words of any type. All points of view about my frustrating (and now ancient) work are welcomed. I especially appreciate those that are specific with constructive critique. No lie though, the occasional pats on the back are also quite comforting.

My version required a ton of imagination and "artistic" license, so those that think it is wrong are 100% correct.

Wasn't there two different intros for "The General" back in 2006? I could've remember back in 2006 there was a different version of that intro. Can anyone confirm?

There used to be a video on YouTube about the intro I'm talking about. I remember it was from Hungary.

There were a few different ones. I think I found 3 or 4, and concluded that there was overlapping of the clips. In total, I figured we had like 4 minutes of song orchestration given to us in various snippets.

What does Axl say right before his screaming in the song you assembled?

"I've got hopes and dreams, and I must feel bolder."

Sweersa, I don't know of anyone else that can hear that in the cellphone clip other than myself, so maybe I just hallucinated it being in there. But I swear, I can hear Axl's speaking voice right there. And actually, I think there's a second voice during the "I must feel bolder" part, and that voice is either a young woman or child. It is so faint I almost didn't include any of it.

Can't remember how I made that little bit. Interviews with Axl, I'm sure - isolating vowels and filling in the "ssss" sounds. The trick for this type of thing is recording your own voice saying or singing it, pulling it up in a software program like Melodyne where you can see the exact way the notes move, and then replacing all of it with Axl clips, shaped very close to the same way.

Lol I assure you I am not trolling - I just cannot believe a take of this quality was made based on a phone recording. Granted I haven't actually heard the phone recording (if anyone has it, please feel free to send). What programme did you use to take the rock band vocals and retune them into this song? Are you actually playing any of the instruments or is it completely 'frankenstein' as you say in how it has been put together? Lastly, if this is all your own work, would you legally be able to put it on YouTube as it is an interpretation and would not be a copyright issue?

Programs used for note manipulation - Adobe Audition and Melodyne (Celemony). Super old versions.

I can't play any instruments. I just enjoy putting puzzles together. This thing was basically a one million piece puzzle.

Every snippet and sliver - even those that have been heavily modified - was created initially by professional musicians. I'm no copyright expert, but I'm pretty sure uploading it anywhere would be a "no-no".

I rock out to a version of what you put together in my car from time to time. I hope the instrumental to the eventual official release is as cool as yours.

Thanks for putting in so much hard work on it. Axl's vocals you cleaned up from the party recording gives goosebumps.

That's really, really nice of you to say. Thanks!!

What inspired you to add that to Silkworms?

Since I can't remember, my educated guess is "Canadian Whisky". Did you ever hear the version that has Bucket playing over that outro? It's super simple, but kinda magical too, I thought. Maybe not.

    PERHAPS, 2000-03-27, Rough Mixes CD #1, 3:56

The leak is 3:51, so we are probably missing 4 or 5 secs of the piano intro.

The leaker seems to have made cuts. One for sure was made during the first chorus, at about 1:34, but it is less than a second. Why? I couldn't tell ya.

A second cut could have been made at the beginning of the solo section, but I can't be sure without looking at it with a magnifying glass.

I suspect the other missing time is likely fade out at the end, or dead space at the beginning. Could be wrong, but the start and finish sounds were awfully close to 0:00 and the very end.

Fair enough. You're far more of an authority on audio than I am and of course you're entitled to your opinion. I just don't hear it myself :/

Well, I certainly didn't say it sounded good, at least. It actually sounds like somebody's instrument is out of tune, but the little bit of vocal isolation I did seems to suggest at least that part of it is real.
