He may well be telling the truth in this case, but I'm in the Pearl Jam world and Dave has always been a bit of an emotional charity case when it comes to his version of events and retelling stories. I think its a good tell that when PJ was combusting internally and NONE of the members wanted to even be around each other, even on stage, he somehow got the shortest end of the stick and was kicked. All of the drummers have come back and collaborated with PJ, even recently due to Matt Cameron getting covid, but guess who hasn't and won't? Dave A. Drummers at the RNRHOF?? All the ones on the albums, even Dave Krusen. Dave A on the other hand? Not even asked to appear.

What has Dave A done since Pearl Jam besides this story that would define his career on his resume, other than "I was Pearl Jam's drummer when they we're the biggest band in the world..." and arguably the best drummer thats been in the band, period.

Eddie Vedder has grown immensely since 1994, as has Axl Rose. Axl squashed the beef with Slash, Duff, and Adler, while Izzy is still pending. Same situation with Eddie and Dave A.

But if a fully mature Eddie Vedder ain't calling Dave A back in the 2020's, I can only imagine what happened between Axl and Dave in the 90's.

Nothing about this is new, but it still took Axl 10 years post this moment to actually put the album out. Meaning, Axl got his way multiple times after this moment.

If Axl wanted Dave A in the band, Dave A would have been in the band regardless of what Goldstein thought.

Now did spinless Doug Goldstein tell one Dave A (who had been out of the biggest band in the world for 3 years and done NOTHING afterward at this point)  "we don't need ya cuz we're gunna reunite the original band" as an excuse to get him to stop calling Axl?

Thats up for debate in my head....

BTW Dave A only wrote 2 pearl jam songs and this is one of them:

I feel theres a reason behind Daves character as why he hasnt been recruited in ANY other band after he was booted from PJ.

I also feel this may be a reason why he wasnt asked to join gnr.

What's really amazing to me is how someone can be a fan of Axl Rose and be such a woke, politically correct, soft little bitch. Seriously. It's beyond me.

Whats funny is Axl Rose himself is quite woke, politically correct and yep soft these days.

But yeah thing is people are fans of the music not always the person.

And theres a reason the US is crime ridden and full of shootings every day. Psst the guns havent helped you.

Can anyone who was a fan around 1993-97 share some anecdotes about what the rock press, musicians, or your friends were saying about the band? What was the perception of GnR back then, especially in North America?

Spaghetti Incident was released without much fanfare and undersold by a huge margin. None of the singles charted high. The Estranged video in December '93 was DOA as was SIDHY in the summer of '94. Sympathy for the Devil tanked at the end of '94. Whatever they put out in '94 went nowhere with audiences - it's like people had moved on already.  Was it because Illusions and the band drama had exhausted people? GnR had not left audiences wanting more? Was it more of a case of an under-promoted cover album that had no bearing on the massive amount of Guns fans still dormant and waiting for an original release?

Could GnR have even put out an album that wouldn't have completely tanked back in the mid 90's? The fall from grace around '93 onward seems really sudden - how did they fall out of public favor that fast? Why didn't bands of their stature like Metallica or U2 get that kind of backlash? Those bands weathered the 90's just fine. On the other hand, it appears like the media and industry folk were expecting/hoping GnR would fall on their face with the next record.

MTV WASN'T PLAYING THEIR STUFF BY '95/'96?

There's this telling quote from Bill Gould of Faith No More in '92:

    And this from '94:

And Marilyn Manson taking a shot at Axl in 1994:

    http://Interview-Seconds_Magazine_Interviews_Marilyn_Manson_&_Madonna_Wayne_Gacy

The band releasing a punk covers album was a huge and underwelling disappointment for everyone wanting a followup of new material after UYI.

They can only ride the wave of 1991s UYI for so long before people move on to the next new music being released from other artists/bands.

The lead singer going missing from all public life and recording life from 1994 onwards was the nail in the coffin.

Most people thought the band had broke up and that was it.

seems like there’s almost universal backlash, has it harmed their reputation you think? Could it harm sales for a future single? Havent seen this backlash to a song of theirs b4

Nope I would say releasing a shit reunion single like absurd would of done more damage.

Oh and the years and years of not releasing anything at all and ignoring their fan base.

I said it before, but I really think they should just open with SCOM so all the casuals and posers can go the fuck home right after and leave a GNR concert to actual fans.

If they give me a 3-hour live concert for my money, they can play whatever the fuck they want - even though for some reason they never play my favorite song Breakdown.

I miss Axl talking on stage though, for me it's part of a real GNR concert. I like when he tells a bit about what inspired a song or lyrics or some story from the road, sometimes it's silly and hilarious, sometimes it goes a bit deeper, I like that, makes it more human and personal.

Bring back those Axl speeches so Duff can rest his back for a bit. Gimme a 20 minute drum solo so Axl can take a nap if it helps. Anything pushing 4 or even 5 hours is totally fine with me. It's not like I have any other plans for such a night.

Opening with SCOM would be interesting.

SCOM then NR. Then see how many casuals stick around haha

    Plenty obviously.

And there's plenty of people not on fan forums who complain about the long gnr set.

Some people are just fine watching 3 1/2 hour shows, with quality that dips up and down significantly... Others want the show to be strong throughout, not want to have so far in the set that are good piss breaks. Heavens door, rocket queen, the slash solo and Coma are all breaks for me.

There are definitely songs in the main set that are played every night or very regularly that could be less regular. Absolutely no reason for the sprawling solo sections in heavens door, RQ. If Axl wants a break, give Duff another song in the set or Maybe Melissa could do a lead?

If axl only did 2 hrs maybe he wouldnt need a break anyhow. Thats how most bands operate.

I really hope they increase the shows to 4 or better yet, 5 hours, I love KOHD  Live. It gets boring when you hear every show, like some of you do. I stay away from that. It sound fresh and nice in my ears. And hope the solos Will be longer, they aré great!

You can have a 5 hour performance of KOHD. Enjoy haha

  9. I prefer quality over quanity. Alot of those tracks Axl cannot sing live anymore and sounds terrible/embarrassing.

Cut the covers, the long instrumentals and the songs he cant sing anymore and have a tight 2 hr set. Rest his voice abit and maybe do just 1 performance per week and relearn how to sing the songs with a vocal coach.

Axls killing his voice if his the one insisting on 3.5 hr shows every couple nights. His already struggling vocally and wont be performing much longer the way his going.

I would actually be ok with a covers album/ep.

At least it gets everyone in the studio together, which might actually reignite the creative juices.

I love what Ghost/Halestorm do, where they release a covers EP between studio albums

The last album the big three released together was a covers album. Another album of covers for probably their final album would be a travesty

Honestly a TSI 2 would be most welcome around here...as it would be a start and would require a lot less give from Axl....other than picking some great songs for his voice. It would be a great dip of the feet starting back where they ended....we should petition hard for that as a starting block....even a covers EP....they already play plenty live, it need not be more than 2 weeks work. The only blockade, is Axl's apathy towards the studio.

No thanks for a covers album

I would agree except i would say management instead of band. It's not for example Dizzy Reeds fault the artwork looks like something out of Minecraft. It comes down to incompetent management I think, & they are only there because of one person, and that ain't Slash duff Fortus Reece Dizzy or Frank.

Agree with what you say here.

I'm going for 6 out of 10. It's a decent song, nothing special though and clearly a little experimental which is cool. It's as good as many CD songs but not a stand out. If it was on an album, it would be one of those songs you listen to occasionally like Shacklers or Scraped.

The casual GNR fan will probably horrified that it isn't a UYI style classic. Oh well. Plenty of forgettable songs on those albums!!! #shotgunblues

Its all opinion. I would personally place shotgunblues above the general, scraped, riad, absurd. And I consider CD more forgettable than UYI.

And it's not even months since it leaked (it's only 6 weeks). I'm sure that by the time Monsters is released it will be slammed as being "shit", too.

I always loved monsters from the first listen but the general has always been a my world/absurd type track to me. Never been a fan of it.

Monsters is probably the strongest track we have from the reunion.

AC/DC are going on a massive tour in 2024 (see thread), do we think there's any chance Axl could fill in again for Brian? It is hard to imagine Brian pulling off a full-blown tour with his issues. Though i find it unlikely for Axl to do AC/DC again, it would be kind of epic.

None. Axl has his own vocal issues these days. I seriously doubt he can do any of the songs any justice now.

He was open to an Axl/DC album, but again he wouldn't have to write anything.

We're getting CD era songs because the lyrics and vocals are already complete, it's really that simple. I wouldn't hold out hope for an actual new album, unless people want something that's mostly instrumental or written by Duff...

I actually wouldn't mind a short album with 3-4 CD leftovers (that they haven't already released), 1-2 Duff songs, 1-2 covers, maybe 1 actual new song, and a long instrumental closing song (like a 10-minute piano driven jam with Slash and Fortus trading solos the whole time).

He wouldnt need to write a gnr album either. They could bring in writers if needed and knock out 10 new songs for a LP.

But yeah as always Axl is the only holdup.

The problem is, the 1st album from the reunion line up couldn't be rehashed CD tracks - it just couldn't. If there were, say a couple, maybe three songs from CD era and the rest were new compositions, then yeah, cool. But not 6+ tracks. Releasing them as singles, or an EP, is the only plausible way really. HOWEVER, they should have been done much earlier in to the reunion, and at a faster pace.

Put three tracks out as singles, and then a six track EP (inc the three singles). Don't con people, tell everyone exactly what the tracks are, where they're from etc. That would have been my approach. Then roll in to new music (if Axl is capable of recording vocals/remotely interested in releasing anything).

That doesnt explain why they couldnt have just recorded new songs from the start like most bands do instead of drip feeding mediocre at times CD leftovers.
