  1. @lame ass security Ok yeah that Ace soloing was pretty good tbf.

I can't get past that fucking makeup and costume image though. Why just why. Where were they borrowing that from? They can't have invented it as a style.

It's unfortunately true that image can count against a band unfairly. When I was a kid I initially disregarded AC/DC because I thought well hey, that fella's an adult wearing a schoolboy uniform, he looks a right cunt and he's obviously trying to appeal to youngsters like me. No, I like GnR, they look grown up, dangerous and hard with all them tattoos and whisky bottles all over the place. Plus swearing and sex noises on the tape. Man, they were the real deal, lol.

Slash in Poison would have been the darkest timeline

    Word

That would have been a tragedy for humankind

I was thinking about the whole Slash/Poison thing the other day. I reckon whoever it was that countered his story about not fitting into the band because he wasn't glam enough might have been correct; I mean, everyone's seen the photos of early GnR with Slash wearing fishnets and makeup, right? So it musta been more a case of, he just wasn't glam enough, not like Bobbi or whatever he's called, that bloke who walked in as Slash left and became the Poison guitarist.

Poison ffs. To think I used to regard Brett Michaels in Unskinny Bop as looking cool, Jesus. What the hell was I thinking. Forgive me I was 10. Praise be for AFD. I'd take a thousand pairs of biker shorts, riot vests and yellow raincoats over any Poison shit, damn.

I hear ya, I actually got into Kiss when I was about 10 years old.  Their makeup and image was targeted to that age group. But I did like a lot of their songs too.  Are you familiar at all with any of their material?

Honestly I couldn't name many songs of theirs, I've heard the hits and seen the image which put me off, but admittedly that is not a fair basis to write a band off. The number of times I've met someone who's only heard November Rain and SCOM and thinks GnR are just some next hair band, sheesh. So yeah hit me with a couple of rateable tracks of theirs and I'll give em another shot.

Sidenote: after recently re-listening to Axl and Baz talk about how edgy the KISS song 'Christene Sixteen' is on the Trunk interview, it's kinda weird considering Axl was apparently shagging a 16 y/o girl when he was 24 anyway.. but let's park that contentious one for the time being..

  4. I've always regarded KISS as being absolutely shit, though tbf that's more down to the image and few songs of theirs I've heard. If anyone can post an amazing tune of theirs that might convert me then go ahead.

Also it seems to me that in the 80s a lot of bands were basically taking their cues from being another Aerosmith or Kiss, or a mixture of the two. With e.g. Motley Crue being another Kiss variant and GnR basing themselves more on Aerosmith. More substance than style. (Of course it's more complicated than that really and I know they took influence from tonnes of bands, Hanoi Rocks etc)

  5. If it had happened to me several times then I guess I might have cause for grievance. Though even legally speaking, there wouldn't be a case for requesting earnings would there? I mean, once somebody writes something here it's in the public domain, its information available to anyone viewing the site. I don't see how there could be a copyright claim or somesuch. Again, I'm happy to be told otherwise if it's the case.

Admittedly it crossed my mind to send them a message when I saw my content recycled, but the immediate afterthought was, what dafuq would I or anyone reasonably demand, a share of the revenue amounting to some spare change? On balance that would seem petty, even if technically I'd be owed $0.05 per click or whatever. They've done enough to provide the GnR community with interesting stuff so fuck it, let it be. That's my fifty cents so to speak. (I'm in the UK anyway so maybe there is less of a litigation attitude here, I dunno.)

As for citing sources, the only difference would be that instead of writing "a poster on mygnrforum.com said...." it would have to read "GunzFukker666 from mygnrforum.com said.." or whatever, which doesn't read so well journalistically. And they do cite this forum as the source, so giving it more potential clicks in return, so I guess that's fair fux really.

Either way I don't see any reason to be hating on these guys, i guess they might tone down the recycling after reading this thread anyway so people's gripes will have been heard.

  6. What would you suggest they do, contact a poster if they've provided content, and wire them fifty cents or whatever when it's earned from an article they produce? It doesn't seem feasible or worthwhile. I don't feel ripped off because it's not as if they'll be making mega bucks off recycling my story. Hence I don't see what the problem should be for others really. If I'm wrong I'm happy to be told why, no beef with anyone here.

  7. Yeah wtf with people getting so aggy about this?

Sid and Geoff are safe guys.

Yeah there's been a lot of non-stories recycled for their website but so what, don't click on it if it doesn't interest you.

They indeed produced an article from a story I wrote on here about meeting the designer of the AFD anniversary Boxset. I didn't get any credit as such. Guess what? I don't care. That's fine with me because I appreciate the work they've done to provide really interesting interviews with key people in the band's history. They are dedicated fans.

  8. Good topic title yeah?

    But seriously folks....

Ever since I first listened to the semi-acoustic version of Crazy on Lies, I've been intrigued by this little sound that appears in the mix. If you listen closely to the top end, you can hear a sort of tinging sound at 0.37, and then a few seconds after. It appears again at 1.29, then at 3.06 and a few seconds after. It's not a sound a guitar would produce so my guess is it's a triangle, since they use shakers and other percussion stuff in tracks like Brownstone.

So. Can you hear it too?

Or is it just me, and I'm fucking crazy?

Where else to ask than on this dedicated fan forum.

    Your thoughts?

  9. If you mean which of the Ritz concerts 87 or 88 is better, well..

88 will always be a favourite because the pro shot is so clear and the energy of the performance is amazing. I only wish the camera dude had focused a bit more on band members other than Axl from time to time. They are quite 'sloppy' in parts (Slash noticeably out of tune at the end part of RQ) but it doesn't detract overall.

The 87 concert is not as good to watch, but fuck, the audio is brilliant - for example, if you listen to the Michelle from it, you can hear the quality of sound is really close to the album version, you can hear Izzy clearly, and Axl effortlessly rasps his way throughout an energetic performance. Plus it's got Reckless Life and You're Crazy (fast)!

  10. I always assumed that the inclusion of the "step back" clip is a nod to the Donnington incident, since it seemed to effect them a lot, but that the actual audio is from a different show, a 90s one rather than Donnington.

The chord progression for the verse?

Yeah, the intro section is a different  riff to the chord progression during the verse when Axl comes in. I think the arrangement would be better if the progression was instrumental for a few bars before the vocal comes in.

The main riff goes for about 16 bars before Axl comes in. He doesn't join in immediately.

No that's a different riff on the intro. I'm talking about the main riff that kicks in when the drums do too. Axl comes in then as well. Would sound better if he leaves it for a few bars before beginning his verse, imo

  13. The odd thing about these final 1993 shows is that despite Slash and others saying the band situation had become untenable and that relations were bad, the shows are really amazing.. Even simple things like them being able to tolerate each other well enough to sit close together on sofas doing acoustic songs with pizzas shows that they were doing a lot better than in 1989..

  14. Normally I couldn't care less about getting remastered and remixed albums, but a new UYI would be of interest because I happen to think the mixing and mastering on the original is crap. There's something about the tone of the guitars that sucks, it's too polished yet muddy and undefined compared to AFD. Even the punk rawness of LLAS is better than the tone of the rockers on UYI. Axl sounds like he is rambling with a peg over his nose on a lot of the fast rockers on UYI.

Plus some of them could be arranged better. Like, the vocals begin soon as the main riff kicks in on Right Next Door To Hell, but they should let the riff breathe for a few bars first before the vocals join in. That's how the songs work on AFD. And don't get me started on November Rain, terrible arrangement. The end part with Slash's 'solo' is just the same 4 bars repeated over and over. Estranged is amazing though, as is Civil War, Locomotive, Coma and the Garden. The rest of the songs are just filler if I'm honest.

  15. I always presumed it was a jibe at Izzy, that it's bullshit he left the band and went off and did his own thing..

But hearing that Axl also does this ad lib 'joke' in the 2000s makes me think it could be something else?

I guess if we knew the date of which concert it was first heard, that might give an indication as to the meaning...
