That was the part that really stuck out, didn't Axl say during the Famous Last Words interview with Kurt Loder that the band found themselves referencing AFD, trying to write WTTJ2 and that's why they covered Live And Let Die? At first glance, it seems like these are from '89-90.

Honestly I find it creepy that this kind of stuff is sold at auctions. I think Erin Everly auctioned off a bunch of letters and notebooks and stuff a few years ago... was this part of what she sold?

You’d have to assume that is part of what she sold because I don’t think this is stuff that Axl would sell. I can understand why you’d find it weird that this stuff is sold, but it’s stuff that Erin had for over thirty years and she wanted to sell.

I’ve just reread the page and the part where it says his friends are tired of him and don’t understand him is like he could see the future.

yeah it would be 1989 as it mentions 27 years and Axl was born in 1962.

  2. That  page of lyrics is fascinating. I love that appetite for destruction is mentioned.

Do we know when these were written because some of the lines sound like stuff he would have talked about when he went through that counsellor stuff that he talked about in rolling stone magazine which he mentions on stage in Chicago in 1992 and how his family were less than impressed.

  3. No they aren’t. I’m a big zeppelin fan and yes I realise that modern bands take influence and style themselves after the bands they grew up on, but most do it in a subtle way, but to me GVF are a bit on the nose with it which is a bit off putting.

I'm hoping we don't have a massive amount of My World fans here.

If my world isn’t voted off in the first round of the UYI II poll then it’s proof we GNR will except any old shite that the band record. Now, fair enough some of the order of songs eliminated was a bit off and not how I would have done it, but my world is a banker to be voted off first.

He generally puts it off for a decade or two, some say when he writes his lyrics he uses the enchanted femur bone of a leprechaun as his scribe, dipping it into an ink well of mermaid tears before writing out his verse on the tempered hide of Dragon's skin as his parchment.

This is about Axl isn’t it ? Sounds like the queens speech for the state opening of parliament in the UK with the parchment and all that stuff that goes into it for a woman in her nineties to read a speech.

  6. After the last two years nothing would surprise me. I’m not exactly brimming with excitement about the tickets I have for the concert in Marley park. Just can’t get excited about it. I mean how many shows in Europe would need to happen for the tour to be worth their while ? Let’s say they cancel some shows further east(and as someone who has been to the Czech Republic many times I don’t think it’s Eastern Europe) then would the Western Europe shows make it viable ?

I felt similar for a long time but changed my mind. Well I never hated the studio version but thought it lacks a certain energy.

I still think DTJ is one of the greatest live songs by GNR but I love the studio version as well.

Well DTJ unlike most all the GNR catalogue is one that Axl will always be able to sing.

That crackling sound is a really strange idea but I'm so used to it that I think I'd miss it if they remove it from a potential remaster XD

It was but for lack of a better reason to vote for one of the remaining songs I went with a part of a song that is annoying.  I know this is UYI 1 and UYI 2 but at the business end of the UYI 2 vote there could be figurative bloodshed because there are some very heavy hitters on that album.  Anyway dead horse this go around.

And maybe this is the plan already but if not could an ultimate poll of all the winning songs from each album be voted in a final poll ? Kind of like the early survivor series events where they’d have a final match with all the surviving wrestlers in it.

Yes I would, in a heartbeat!

its a good fucking song, music is great and his voice is amazing, mean, bitter and exploding in the end!

I was 13 when I first heard it and was blown away by the power of Axl's voice!

even thought my English wasn't good, I heard most of these troubled "words" and never thought of them as people think now. Always thought it must have been something that he has gone through

so yeah, I would definitely play it for others and it is the best song on LIES, for me!

I’m not sure anyone either on the lies survivor thread or this one have disputed the musical quality of the song. It’s the lyrics that are problematic.

Depends on the context or the people. If I was with people who weren't fans but were interested in GNR discography/deep cuts I might play the whole album with an explanation that one song has since been withdrawn on later editions and why. If someone said "no, skip that song" then I'd skip it.

I wouldn't just play the song in isolation, as in "listen to this one song that features offensive language".

I don't really play music to other people though so it's a slightly moot point for me.

Isn’t context on some endangered species list ? I think it is otherwise we wouldn’t have every think any of us in our thirties or older watched on TV being viewed through a modern lens and reconned to imply there is something offensive  over the lion king which is a fictional story about lions, that Aladdin is insensitive because the actors speak with American accents despite the fact it’s about a fucking blue genie and a scorerer, and flying carpet, and while they’re at it, maybe they can call the little mermaid oppressive to mermaids despite the fact mermaids are fictional. Exhales.

Ha, I knew it would ignite these kinds of discussions the moment I realized OIAM is on Lies and Lies is next in line in the game! Didn’t expect a new thread, but good call.
The answer is quite simple: Apart from personal qualities (obviously) and their GNR fandom status, it heavily depends basically on a single factor: that person’s age. What generation they’re from. That’s the key, I’m afraid. Generalizing here, of course, but that’s the gist. No need for further explanation, I think.

Well I didn’t want to derail the other thread which is great with a side discussion on OIAM.

  12. This thread idea stems from the conversations about the song one in a million in the GNR
Lies survivor threads. The ideas of these threads for appetite and now lies was great btw.

Anyway more than one poster made the statement that while they don’t condone the lyrics used, they being GNR fans can to some degree understand the reasons why Axl used those words or what he meant by them. That’s all well and good and I posted that quote from the movie men in black and a person being rational, and people being less so.

Anyway, would you as a GNR fan play this song for a group of people who weren’t GNR fans, or just a group of people in general. I personally wouldn’t(along with a few other GNR songs) because while I may  be okay listening to it, that doesn’t mean that others would. I mean they’ve put stupid warnings in front of Disney classic movies because in the 21st century they see something that was never meant that way.

I love One in a Million, not because I approve of Axl saying what he said but because my understanding since the very first listen is that it's not malicious, it's a raw, warts and all cautionary tale about someone beginning to - but struggling - to confront and let go of their misguided bullshit that they were raised on.

And to quote Tommy lee Jones from men in black

A *person* is smart. People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals and you know it.
