Queens of the Stone Age officially announced their new album this week for release in June. It’s that easy, Axl.
More importantly, when the likes of Metallica, Foo Fighters and Extreme came out with their recent singles, it was like ‘meh, it’s alright’ but QOTSA actually managed to come back with a bonafide greatest hit that can stand alongside their setlist staples. You can be a veteran act and still add something of genuine worth to your back catalogue and upcoming tour. Come on, Axl.

The parallels are stronger with GNR and The Stone Roses. We can even ignore them both having Roses in their name. The Stone Roses came onto the scene in the late 80s, released a seminal debut album, did a lot of drugs, took five years to release a follow up, started losing members and then imploded in 1996.
There was bitterness between Ian Brown and John Squire and both were adamant there’d never be a reunion. There was a reunion. They played to their biggest crowds ever but Ian Brown’s voice was well past its best and frankly awful. They ended up releasing two forgettable singles, gave up on an album and then split up again.
To top it off, there was that bizarre rumour that Slash was going to join the band in 1996. Out of the fire, into the frying pan…

I bought GNR on vinyl at the time and then upgraded to CD.

Axl is a recluse with no family. I’ve felt for the longest time that he simply doesn’t have anything in his life to inspire new GNR lyrics anymore. He’s said all he needs to.

Sleepwalk My Life Away is definitely getting played on the nights Enter Sandman doesn’t.

Shit! What warehouse have you worked at where you get to travel the world, stay at luxury hotels, and have minimal working hours?
Fair rebuttal.

Whether you’re Slash or Melissa it must pay well to be in GNR because I’d have left by now. It’s like a warehouse job at this point and every day is Monday.

No ‘next chapter’ lies for this tour, just an ad letting you know exactly what you’re gonna get.

I doubt that whatever trivial beef Axl and Bruce Dickinson had in the past carries over 2023. You could probably have Motley Crue playing with GNR today.

I want to believe this increases the chances of Bad Obsession getting played this year. Preferably replacing Better so we can go another five minutes without grimacing.

The AC/DC and Ozzy night will do best for the rarity of it. They should have split those two up.

2002 Axl was an imposter, even if he was played by Axl.

Even with it being an Izzy solo record, the need to promote it might make him more open to lowering his demands for a guest spot with GNR this year…
-
Last year I think Slash had reached his limit for going through the motions on the same songs over and over but still needed that cash. His playing was like a cry for help.

I used to agree until Hard Skool was officially released.
Or Absurd for that matter. You don’t need to be a perfectionist to know those lyrics needed updating and fleshing out.

This is what GNR would have ended up sounding like with Axl and DJ Ashba at the wheel… and I’m not totally against it.

I think I said this last time but the lighting at her shows is kinder to Axl than GNR’s.

Shadow of Your Love is the third track on Greatest Hits on streaming services (and vinyl) and part of their Essential playlists. It might have spent decades being a deep cut/b-side but it’s now officially a greatest hit that gets maximum exposure to today’s listeners.
Plus it’s one of the few remaining reliable showcases of Axl’s rasp.

What’s everyone’s favourite Slash look post 2000?

Pink is already playing a show that day. The organisers are just throwing around names like U2, Adele and The Rolling Stones without actually getting them to sign up and having it on the same day as Glastonbury is amateurish planning.
Plus the same organisers already did one of these last year. It was no Live Aid…
-
They’re gonna get shat on for something in the build up. Metallica and U2 did (fox hunting and tex evasion respectively) and cancel culture wasn’t really a thing when those two played. So they should just make the most of it and come out with Out Ta Get Me. Jay-Z starting with Wonderwall into 99 Problems silenced the naysayers fast.
-
I can 100% confirm that Lana will not be performing with them due to her set clashing with theirs.
-
Gotta have Reckless Life or Shadow Of Your Love in there as well. He still manages to get some power behind those two on his worst nights.
At least social media won’t be able to fat shame Axl without tying itself in double standard knots over Lizzo.
-
Given that Lizzo is listed as co-headliner, it wouldn’t surprise me if that is their get out clause for not showing GNR on TV and going with Lana Del Rey instead.
The "New Album" Thread. Thanks to the long ass thread, I’m going home!

Sure, I’ve even said that myself of Axl in the past, although I think it’s also fair to say that Josh Homme has had to battle some significant demons of his own in recent years and in some people’s eyes is probably even cancelled.
It’s impressive that he’s managed to come back with something so confident and vital sounding.
