    Well.....it helps!

When the newest song in your setlist is 13 years old, then there's absolutely no doubt about the fact that you're trading on the past. There's not even an argument to the contrary really.

You can say you enjoy the shows, the band play well etc.....but it really is a falsehood to claim that it isn't an exercise in nostalgia now.

So if Led Zeppelin reformed for one more tour and no new music to offer, would that be a pure nostalgia tour?

Well Styx had a new album out in 2017 and have another one coming next month, so they're clearly moving forwards and not just about nostalgia.....whereas GNR? I'd say they are the very definition of trading in past glories at the moment. Even the merchandise is based on an album from the 1980s.

There's not really any getting around the fact that GNR are an entirely nostalgic act at the moment. That's the way they seem to want it to be.

Styx is pure nostalgia. Collective Soul is most def nostalgia. So making an album negates nostalgia?

Taking aside how they play live.....what are they doing that makes you not see them as a nostalgia act?

I saw a commercial for a Styx and Collective Soul concert at some casino near me. The commercial was exactly what a nostalgic act would look like and the feeling was pure nostalgia. For me a nostalgic act is something that has almost no vitality outside of reminding people of a time when the music was relevant. GNR still perform music at a level that has life.

Slash might not be bored, but he seems to care less about certain songs, and whether he's with GNR or SMKC he's in "his own world" when he's playing. I'm sure it's still exciting to hear 10,000 people or whatever cheering for them but that wasn't really my point, there's a clear decline from 2016-2020 in performance and energy.

Agreed. I attribute that decline to Axl’s performance. I think he still cares about a great performance, but what he considers great now is just way below expectations. Hopefully they only have one great tour left.

If you can watch the 2019 Selects and honestly still call them a powerful live band, then I don't know what to tell you, we simply disagree. They really should have ended the tour after 2017... Axl was already sounding tired then, but the 2018-20 recordings are just depressing to listen to, it sounds like his voice was on its last legs, and the band sounded quite bored for the most part. 2016-17 was also a cash-grab but at least it was exciting... 2018-20 is purely a bunch of professional performers going through the motions for a payday.

And now that I really think about it, maybe the Motley Crue comparison isn't fair - at least Motley released a live album/dvd of their reunion tour, plus a full album and a few other songs, not to mention The Dirt and its soundtrack. They coasted through tour after tour playing basically the same setlist for years with a deteriorating frontman, but at least they also played their most popular album in full and their traveling festival was a cool idea. I almost can't believe GNR have reached a point where they make Motley fucking Crue look this good by comparison, yet here we are...

I was at a 2019 show and it was a great show. The selects are just garbage. Embarrassing, actually. Slash loves to play live. He’s not bored up on that stage. Either is Duff. However, the band need one last album and one last proper tour. Then call it a day because Axl doesn’t have the drive anymore.

If they intend to tour with the same show until they retire, I think they'll end up back in Vegas doing residencies before it's all said and done.

On their last US tour they were down to a few arenas, and couple theaters/smaller venues (4000~ capacity) and some festivals. I know GNR fans hate to admit it, but the band is now a Motley Crue-tier nostalgia band, or maybe barely above that tier... which is just fucking sad.

I still don’t see GNR as a nostalgic band. The band is still powerful live. Motley Crue isn’t comparable to GNR.

I don't think the lack of new music or redundant sets is the problem. Most casual fans would be very happy with the crappy setlist from that last show in Mexico. I just think they overestimated the appeal of the band. Very few hard rock bands can fill stadiums. GNR in 2016 was a reunion that people had wanted for decades. Metallica did a stadium tour in 2017 but they hadn't toured the US in 8 years. GNR (with Slash) will be an arena act forever but their window to be a stadium band on their own closed after 2017.

Metallica and GNR need to tour one more time together.

Just been pointed out to me that if you look for Chicago Wrigley Field standing tickets it informs you:

    • If you do not want these seats, you must REMOVE or REPLACE the offer from the cart to release the seats.

....which means it's presumably happening, as long as you have a Covid vaccination. Has this been communicated to people with tickets?

    That’s odd.

Axl is probably still banging 23 year old supermodels 40lbs overweight and with a terrible haircut. So I guess it's all about motivation.

The man is pushing 60, he's allowed to be fat - if it doesn't affect his performance negatively. But he has to grow the hair long again, that doo is inexcusable in current form.

I agree with your assessment of his hair cut. It looks disgusting and odd. Axl is too wealthy for such a poor wig.

Definitely, but for how long? Once the people see the playlist, Axl's form etc., they'll know better. Casuals will ensure the ticket sales for 2021, but if nothing new/interesting happens, 2022 will be the start of the decline, as people will be preferring shows of bands with more... creative approach.

Nah, GNR will attract people until they retire. These are the last of the great rock bands and once they are gone it’s over.

That’s the thing. Ticket sales were poor prior to the pandemic, not because of the pandemic. The problem now is that public health, local guidelines and restrictions have been in such a state of flux that it’s not giving LiveNation the confidence or time to promote these shows.

If they put some money into advertising these shows, and gave people confidence that they will happen, I think they’d be able to fill stadiums to a profitable level. People are starved for live entertainment.

    I agree with you 100%.

  12. Well, this thread actually turned into educational debate after being dormant for awhile. I’m surprised more people haven’t contributed to this thread. No matter what side you take it’s one of the most interesting subjects that can be discussed.

    That's to assume they aren't interdimensional...if that's even a thing.

It could be possible for a species to discover secrets of the universe that would allow inter-dimensional travel or maybe to transcend this reliant entirely.

As it is right now I don't see an uptick in sales occurring naturally. It's going to take money in promotion and the band will have to become more visible. I'd suggest a few TV appearances (Kimmel, Colbert, playing Jungle or Sweet Child as a musical guest, that sort of thing). I know Axl has an aversion to interviews unless the topics are strictly controlled, so I don't see the band doing Stern, but it wouldn't be a bad way to get attention. Bottom line is more people need to know GnR is touring this summer. The Metlife show is selling very poorly and that's the #1 market in the country.

The band doesn’t have to do any promotion because they are guaranteed a payday regardless. I’m sure the shows will sale well enough to turn a profit once the general public knows for certain concerts will open this summer. Once it’s a fact, then the concert sales should be okay.

I don't take the videos as evidence by themselves. I take them into context as to what the pilot and radar eyewitnesses have said along with what Lue Elizondo (who worked for ATTIP and analyzed the radar and sensor data) have said. If the video's were all we had, I would be right with Soul in his scenario number 1. Right now, if what Lue and others have said is correct about the data (and they have said there are many, many cases like the Nimitz, that isn't a one shot deal) then I'm honestly leaning towards the ET hypothesis over the others.

The rubber is really going to hit the road when we get the Congressional Report. If we find out that Lue, the pilots and radar operators were full of it or were just all mistaken, I'll eat crow and say you guys were right to be more skeptical than I was. But I think this is getting too big to be liars or simple mistakes. We shall see though.

Even before this recent evidence, my approach was to conservatively assume we were not the highest or lowest in the intelligent species hierarchy of the Universe.

The thing is even if there is advanced life forms then they would still be part of the universe. The universe is the real mystery. Nobody knows why it exists.

Rain away man, I want to see what the more skeptical guys thoughts are on the latest developments.

Edit: Specifically, I think it'll be very key what this June report from Congress says. If they back up what Lue Elizondo said "craft going at least 13,000 mph, no wings, no obvious signs of propulsion, no sonic booms, instantaneous acceleration, trans medium, right hand turns, etc" surely you'd have to relent and say, ok, this is beyond US, Russian, or Chinese technology and the ET hypothesis has got to be at least considered now.

I’m skeptical and I’ve asked many people I know what they think of the videos and nobody knows what to make of it. I’m of the thought that if there is intelligent life in this universe the they are too far away to communicate with us. And, it’s a huge assumption that life elsewhere would be more advanced than us. There could be a planet full of dinosaurs that never experienced a catastrophic event or a planet of Neanderthals. Soul monster listed four possibilities for the videos. I agree with his first Choice.

I'm more interested in the radar/sensor data. If we get confirmation in the upcoming government report about the numbers that Lue Elizondo has been talking about (as far as g forces and speed and maneuverability of these things), that's more compelling to me than a video.

Everything soul monster said in this thread is highly accurate. His insights and rationals are spot on.

Anyone have any thoughts on the video's I posted. How about specifically the David Fravor one? It's the most credible UFO sighting that I am aware of. I listened to a longer form podcast with him and he was with a whole squadron of guys who were flying above in formation when he dove down to check this object out. I would assume when these guys retire they'll come out publicly too. The video that was captured on the same day was actually from another squadron that went out after Fravor and saw the same object. So we have two different fighter squadron's that saw this thing do things that aren't physically possible with known technology, with video evidence.

My thoughts are the videos need to be more than heat sensor videos. I wanna see a real video.

I love RHCP, but if there’s one thing I can criticize about them, it’s that their setlists aren’t really that diverse. Whenever they play festivals (which is most of their shows really), it’s mainly just the hits.

I agree. It doesn’t bother me because the RHCP are an amazing concert. But, they have so many incredible songs that should be played. I’d love to RHCP vary the set list like Pearl Jam.
