Something has to not be released to fall victim of cancel culture?

Rowlings tweet that you keep crying over was released? So I guess youll have to self-soothe about that now, having stated this definition of cancel culture.

SOLO was awesome, y'all just couldnt see it through your tears. Er, excuse me your man-tears

    Solo sucked balls.

    So tinfoil hat stuff here.

What if Hardschool was/is intended to be on this release?

As far as I've seen there's no mock-up with the track list on the back of the LP. Could point to a tracklist still in flux or one that was hastily "updated"? Don't know if there's any more room on the LP's?

Also I know that this is intended as a vinyl release but will we get a CD release with SOYL on it?

If you're right about Hardschool I'll buy it.  If not I have no interest.

I know I have news from the BBC and other countries too on my cable. I don't usually watch them. The world news usually tells us what's going on and online too.

Sometimes I don't watch anything. It's just too much.

Try watching Fox News every now and then.  It'll make you feel better.

For a little perspective, Chris Brown - the guy who beat the shit out of Rhianna - grossed over $30 million during his 2019 NA Tour.

If a guy like that isn't "canceled," is there really a cancel culture?

I get what you're saying but it isn't like cancel culture doesn't still hurt some in the wallet.  Dukes of Hazzard can be purchased on DVD but they've lost money not being aired on regular television.  I know Disney has the money but I'm sure it isn't cheap altering one of their rides to the Frog Princess.  It does however have the opposite effect in some cases.   I actually bought "Baby it's cold outside" just to see what all the fuss was about.  I think the broader result of cancel culture is what we never see or hear.  People are afraid of being targeted so we all have to be so careful to not offend.  Think about the next CEO that gets invited to the White House like Goya.  They're going to say fuck that we don't want boycotts hurting our business.  Look at the AFD remastered release.  OIAM is on Lies but they were afraid to put it out now.  They still would have made millions in ticket sales but were afraid to include it because of what might have happened if they did.  They can say whatever they want about why it was left off but it's really because of fear of drawing the cancel culture mob their way.

Glad to see so many opinions on this! I'm gonna take some time later to read through everything and respond.

This was a very good idea.  Cancel culture is here to stay unfortunately.  Plenty to discuss.  To me the worst of all cancel culture is when they find something from decades ago that's been fine all this time but now it's offensive.  Examples are "Baby it's cold outside", Dukes of Hazard, and most recently the bs surrounding Gone with the Wind.  We told my daughter they were changing Splash Mountain in Disney and she was pretty pissed.  Where does it stop?

I’d like to add that the difference between the right and left is that people on the left who get cancelled stay cancelled whereas people on the right don’t give a shit. That’s why Al Franken disappeared and Pussy Grabber didn’t miss a beat.

Al Franken disappeared because his own party made him resign.  "Pussy Grabber" aka "my guy" didn't miss a beat because he won the election.  Should have quit while you were ahead buddy.  Your first post was actually pretty good.

It can certainly be a frustrating thing that makes little sense sometimes. You have people posting on Instagram to boycott  Goya Beans for their CEO supporting Trump on iPhones made with parts from Uighur slave labor - just clownish. It’s often not about what’s right, it’s more about the performative act of showing everyone (and yourself) how much you care or whatever.

I find that these people also lack an endgame. Louis CK took two years off of doing anything, lost a movie deal, came back and started doing one off shows and you still had these people saying he should’ve stayed away longer or something. What the fuck was he supposed to do? Stand up comedy is his job. And who decides? Why is it you and not the sold out crowd he just played to?

Most cancel culture comes from the left.  It's only a matter of time before they eat their own.

Ugh, isn't Cancel Culture the worst?

I havent really thought about it in relation to businesses. But for people I have thought about it a lot, and cancel culture is a horrible and destructive thing.

There are real issues that need to be solved. And we have better tools to make that change already. Its really sad. We need to dig deep for humanity and compassion. Because we all need it ourselves whether we can admit it or not.

My thinking is only on one tiny sliver of the larger phenomenon of Cancel Culture, and that is Cancel Cultures role in splintering social movements for positive change. Or how Cancel Culture threatens to knock important movements off track, causing them to loose focous,

      Hide contents

For starters, Cancel Culture doesnt address the actual issues, so it fails as a strategy. Like say the issue is racism. Racism isnt a person, its something that is corrupting a person. Address the racism. Instead, Cancel Culture excludes people when the opportunity could be taken to connect with a wrongdoer and have them reflect on their action. They might learn and grow and stop doing that harm. That actually works to solve the issue of racism.

Cancel Culture insists on viewing the world as binary, but that is not what the world and its people actually are. Thats oversimplifying the complex issue of injustice. And Cancel Culture also contradicts itself because it claims to act in the name of humanity, but it robs the humanity of the person being cancelled by making them into a one dimensional caricature.

People are multidimensional and can evolve on issues, grow as humans and change their outlook. Cancel Culture seems to not want people to grow and evolve as indicated by its love of digging up old Tweets that in many cases do not reflect that persons views in the present day. If one actually cares about the issue itself then they should be congratulating the person for changing their opinion for the better, not punishing them for it!

Looking back, we can see the roots of the current Cancel Culture in secular fundamentalism. Their plan was to have religion canceled  And its interesting to root the analysis in that historical context. Because secular fundamentalism presents itself as liberal but in fact aligns perfectly in many cases with neo-conservative foreign policy/ war on terror stuff. Likewise, Cancel Culture promotes itself as being progressive but in fact does not align with preexisting currents or tendencies in progressive movements. They are ideologies built on flawed premises that are unrelated to reality. Cancel Culture is in fact a very neoliberal type of thought, focused on the wants of the self (identity). Ignoring the big picture (material).

Preexisting progressive movements focus on unity and solidarity. Progressive moments today are very focused on what could be said to be alternatives to Cancel Culture. Things like accountability circles, restorative justice and transformative justice.

Accountability Circles - Most commonly found in small organizational structures. If someone in the org does wrong it will be addressed by a small group of people who will engage in dialogue with the victim and perpetrator. The community is usually made aware of it all. And theres steps taken to hold the person to account while also trying to avoid small minded binaries and punitive justice measures as much as possible.

Restorative Justice - Sometimes called Community Justice in courts. This is a process that was learned from some Indigenous Peoples in NA. It takes a few forms today but they all have common characteristics. The restoration part often involves the victim and perpetrator sitting down together. The victim is able to express how they've been effected and harmed. They get to ask the perpetrator why they did it. Theres some sort of commitment made by the perpetrator to the victim - thats the Restorative part. I've seen an example where the mom of a murdered child told the murderer "You are now a part of my life" and she visits him in jail. In turn he tries to value his life as much as she does and studies and works hard at being a model inmate. No one wants to see yet another life wasted. (note: if someone you loved was murdered and you don't want to visit the murder in prison, that is totally understandable and fair. The doesnt reflect on you in any negative way. It works for this Mom, thats all.)

Transformative Justice - Instead of just returning things to like how they were before a bad event, why not use the event as a chance to transform the world for the better? Its like Judo - use the momentum to ones advantage. This process seeks to rid the world of the injustice rather then simply hold perpetrators to account. You see stories of people leaving hate groups and now they speak to school children to warn them against joining a hate group. That type of thing could also be found in the above two models, but Transformative is a framework that seeks to get maximum positive change out of really bad situations. Like, say someone shits everywhere just to make the world ugly and then you grow flowers in their manure. Then you sit in the beautiful garden and talk about their pain and healing. Then the next season they ask to be the gardener. And the sanctuary that they create gives a small child a place to sort out their thoughts and avoid going doing a bad path in life. Ripples of grace emanating from the sight of harm, all through the generations to come.

I got a lot out of a few books on this recently. Here's one (Content Caution),

Turn This World Inside Out The Emergence of Nurturance Culture by Nora Samaran

And this Emmy Award winning documentary, available on YouTube, TVO Docs channel,

White Right: Meeting the Enemy by Deeyah Khan

Anyways, like I say, these reflections only touch on one aspect of the larger thing that is Cancel Culture. But I don't fear it in general. My favourite comedians say unspeakably vile and mean shit and I love it!

I don't recall watching the international version of Fox news when I've been overseas but apparently there is...

    https://www.foxnews.com/foxaroundtheworld/

As far as "unbiased" news, I generally pay attention to Reuters and the BBC if I'm over there.  From my experience, they report the news and don't spend a predominant amount of time on news that (generally speaking) is focused on politics, opinions, etc.

What a lot of folks in the U.S. don't realize is that much of the bias in (mostly cable) U.S. news media has to do with what they choose to report, how much time they spend on it and how they report it.  It's not just about the % of time they spend on opinion pieces.

Most news outlets in the U.S. are ratings driven so they will report the news in a way that (they believe) will get them the best ratings.  A good example of this was when Hurricane Michael, a category 5 hurricane, was about to hit the U.S., just about every single news outlet spent a predominant amount of time reporting it live.

I clicked over to CNN and they were still talking about "Russian Collusion" while the ticker on the bottom was basically telling people to "shelter up".

And before anyone gets offended, I'm sure Fox News can be guilty of it too...I've just never caught them doing it so blatantly.     Typically, when you watch Fox News, (depending on the anchor, etc) you know and understand it will likely be conservative leaning.  They don't try to "subliminally" hide the fact that they are.

I know what you mean.  I mostly watch Fox News but flip to CNN often to hear what kind of hysteria they're feeding their audience.  To be honest my favorite shows are Tucker Carlson and The Five.  Hannity is my least favorite of them all and he's their biggest Trump cheerleader.  Tucker should be their flagship show instead imo.  Thanks for the info btw  👍

In fairness, the international version of CNN is nothing like the U.S. version.  (Last time I watched the international version years ago, anyway).

It seemingly had much more reporting of “just the news” vs. opinion. That probably has to do with the fact that there’s a lot more news to report on a global level vs. primarily US News.

I didn't know there were different versions.  Good to know they're only garbage here in America.  Is there a different Fox News too?

It's really amazing, but so far the school opening the some states have been a mess.

Teachers are protesting that they don't want schools to open.

I did have a virtual meeting with my school last night. Classrooms are smaller, but on Monday virtual teaching begins. Classrooms are set to open after Labor Day. Not sure how many kids can be in a classroom. There is usually about 20 or so kids. I doubt that can happen. It looked like about 5 desks to each classroom. The teachers will be teaching different subjects to the kids. There will be time during the day to teach a child individually if they need extra help.

I guess we'll find out Monday how the virtual teaching will go. Meanwhile, there are still many parents who don't have a computer. Not sure if you can do this on your phone.

I still wish they would just push the school year back to 2021 and hope by then there is a vaccine. I doubt it, but I hope I'm wrong.

Since some air particles can stay in the air for a bit everyone is wearing a mask. I hope this is enough.

I think this virus mutates every time we try to something that will slow it down.

But if the federal government doesn't do something fast about testing, by the end of August it won't matter.

I saw one doctor on CNN saying how you not wearing a mask is bullshit and he sees people dying everyday. He also said if testing is not ramped up, it'll be too late.

CNN isn't good for your mental health.

No. You need to reread my posts. That is not what I said. I said poor people with out access to fresh foods (a "food desert") eat poorly and cant afford to take the necessary supplements for a vegan diet. I never said all vegan people.

Anyways, I grow my own organic black beans and lentils in my garden to supply my protein. What about you?

Wow, I wonder if he was told as soon as the news came in, or nt until he came off stage. Would be so difficult to have to live that out infront of the news media. Heart breaking.

I remember hearing an interview where Bobby said that he was Jerrys "bag man." He held Jerrys drugs and would only give hime the previously agreed to dosage. Obviously he couldnt always be the bag man. That must be difficult to think about too.

Trumps on spot? He wanted things reopened in April. So he lost hard and is a fool. Of course he still continues to want things reopened, after that epic fail. His "By Easter" disaster should give you pause.

You're really triggered by Trump.  You ignore my entire post (which was directed towards someone else btw) but only responded to the part about Trump.  So hollow.

Kids and teachers that have gone back to school are testing positive for the virus. Whether they had it before and brought it to school who knows?

I know Texas has been cleaning the schools getting ready for students. Teachers and cafeteria workers have gone back to work. I still say this virus is in the air and everywhere else and no matter how good you clean and sanitize, it's there to stay and it will continue to infect whoever the hell it wants to.

Your country is lucky that cases have not gone up when kids went to school. Here it's not that way. Kids have gone back to school this month and already some have tested positive for the virus which means they will bring it home. I'm not sure how the schools know? Maybe the kids are being tested, not sure? No one is saying a damn thing.

I know kids have to go back to school, but honestly, I don't see why the US schools can't wait until next year. I doubt this is going to be good once the whole country has their kids in classrooms.

One nurse in a Georgia high school quit when she saw that no kids were distancing nor wearing masks. I don't blame her.

Kids need to go back to school.  They need in person learning.  What do you suggest we do with all the kids who's parents need to go to work to support them?  Do you suggest leaving a first grader home alone all day and expect them to get a proper education online?  Do you think parents can just quit working for a year?  You bash everyone who wants to get schools open but I'd love to hear a solution from you yourself.  I believe teachers need to get to work just like any other essential worker.  Have you been to the food store or your local Wal-Mart?  The people who work there make a lot less than teachers and they put their lives at risk every day to ring hundreds of people up every day.  I get you're scared of what's going on but look at the statistics.  The vast majority of kids are virtually immune to the virus and the number of kids dying from it are almost non existent.  Sorry but Trump is spot on.

Is is true that out of ~9000 deaths in California that only 1 is a child? While it sucks that old people are most at risk I'm really glad that children aren't  being affected (from a mortality rates perspective).

Yup and zero in many several states including hard hit New Jersey.  My kids are going back to school in September with mandatory masks and wristbands monitoring their temperatures both provided by the schools.  Unless your child is morbidly obese or has a pre existing medical condition you should feel fine sending them into the classroom.

We're all being tracked already.  I do question the motives of our governments though.  If a vaccine is truly on the way what's the real reason for tracking our every move?
