Not really sure what giving up on this band means exactly? Either the album will come out or it won't. I'm not gonna stop listening to GNR if the album doesn't come out. Why should I? I like the music. And if a new album comes out some day I'll buy it and I'll probably enjoy it. It's as simple as that. What is there to give up on?
Agreed 100%.
What, exactly, does "following the band" entail? Posting on some online message boards during work?
Gotta tell you, that's not really putting me out.
People talk like there is all this time and dedication needed to follow this band. Like its prep for running a marathon or something.

Missy was awesome in the finale. Better than the Doctor and Jenna. I've only watched new Who, but I actually prefer Missy's Master over the other one.
The Master played by John Simmm went WAY off the rails, in my opinion.
Started out real strong, but then got pretty goofy. And I hated the way he was used in his last episode.
Missy is the most like the original Master, played by Roger Delgado back in the Third Doctor's time. Cunning, devious, bitter sense of humor...but always dignified and calculating. No over the top ranting some of the successive portrayals were.

I've heard rumors but I was going "Oh shit!" when it happened. I am just glad they gave the finale time to develop. It was a satisfying finale. And I look forward to The Christmas Special...and I wonder if it will be Jenna Coleman's last. Maybe she wanted out but she was convinced to stay? She has excellent chemistry with Capaldi.
She seems to get a lot of online hate.
Truthfully, if I had to rank the companions since the relaunch, she's probably last. But I don't find her bad, I just felt Rose, Donna, and Amy were stronger characters. Hell, Martha too.
As for Missy, I was SO hoping she's be The Rani. The Rani is a really cool character, but stuck with one average story and one flat out terrible one. Yet the character itself is a cool one, and it would have at least been different.
I thought Gomez was awesome though.

Tough to imagine now, but in those days Axl was still just a few years removed from wrapping up the biggest, rockingest tour ever, the UYI's were fairly fresh in the rear view (TSI was a brief hiccup for all we knew), and the future should've been nothing but more awesomeness.
What a difference 15 years or so can make- imagine any self-respecting (or even not self-respecting) musician signing up with this permanent holding pattern today...
Yep, yep.
At the time, it wasn't a bad bet. Both Axl and Guns N' ROses were so huge. And there was a void in the rock band genre at the time, so that only made it even more attractive.
But look how it all went. Imagine this sales pitch, circa 1999 :
"Well, the hope it to have the album out by 2008. And just so we're clear, I won't lift a finger to promote it and draw some attention to your work. Just want to make sure we are on the same page there.
We won't start touring for over a year after that, and really won't tour our own country until 2011. Then, fingers crossed, by 2012 we'll be playing smaller club type venues in Las Vegas by. That goes well, we do it again in 2014.
This is all best case scenario, obviously. We're going to have to get a little bit lucky and have all this play out just like this.
You in?"

That crap is so far removed from what Guns N Roses was originally about that words cant even express it properly.
Very true. And for that reason, I awlays hated it.
But after reading this thread a bit last week, I went ahead and ripped Evader's remix off of Youtube. And I kind of dug it, I can't lie.

I think it was the same way he got all these guys to sign on back in 1999 or whenever.
They were taking a flyer on a guy who at one time was huger than huge. Would he be able to replicate it? Who knows? But they were willing to take a shot.
And I think a common denominator in all the guys that left was their coming to the realization that not only was he not going to be able to replicate it, he wasn't even really going to try.

So what did everybody think of the big reveal?
-
I think it really started to fade when Bucket, Brain & Finck gradually left the band. But I also really want to know what, specifically, sparked his decision to flee the world when he turned in Chinese Democracy to the label. On top of that, what happened between December 2010 & October 2011 that made for such a profound change in attitude and appearance?
I am of the opinion he pulled his disappearing act to take the pressure off.
Suppose he really went out there and flogged this thing. Doing interviews, doing press. And then it still tanks. That's embarrassing.
But if you enter the Witness Protection Program for a year, hey, anything that happens is gravy. Look how much it sold without me even doing anything.
As for what happened to him physically, I think it hit him that this whole thing is never really going to work. It might not have ever worked even with Bucket, Robin, and Brain. We'll never know. But I don't think he really thinks it can work with DJ, Ron, and Frank. Whatever fucks he had left to give are pretty much used up now.

SCOM is a song that has always been ok to good live, but never as good as the studio version IMO
Agreed.

Shitty at first and then ok
Same as always
Probably, but the bar on that "ok" keeps lowering.

Really, really tough call here. I'm split.
Definitive song - WTTJ
Best song - SCOM
Favorite song - PC

I can see why Axl wouldnt be interested in what he brought in.
Then why have him in the band?
To play BH parts? Axl and Ron never wrote anything together. He's obviously a touring musician.
But if you think that little of him, or DJ for that matter, doesn't it undercut your credibility that you are a legit band?

It would not change in the least.
Of course I have never been one of these fans that feels the need to take sides on all this bullshit.
In my view, its only people that use the term "slap in the face" when talking about a rock band that need the actual slap in the face.

A reunion tour would make them quite relevant. Not in terms of a creative force in the current music biz, but it would be a hot topic and newsworthy.
With Axl's current level of performance and commitment, the only news coming out of it would be how far he's fallen. Maybe some good press for a short time and then the jokes will start coming and interest will probably die.
Its the elephant in the room, for sure. He'd be the weak link.
-
More of a brand than a band? Yes. The time for GNR to remain relevant is long gone. Ever since CD came out, they forever hold the label of "that band that could've been."
No lineup changes, reunion, box sets or releasing of old CD material will change that.
A reunion tour would make them quite relevant. Not in terms of a creative force in the current music biz, but it would be a hot topic and newsworthy.
Because they aren't even that now. They obviously aren't relevant as a creative force in today's music biz, but who even talks about them?
I can't be the only GNR fan who is asked by friends if they will ever get back together, and have no idea they are even still around in any incarnation.

if you want to call them highlights: IRS, Sorry, CD and Scraped are it for me.Better and exspecially Catcher aint the highlights for many fans, dont get it wrong.
Everyone's are going to be different. Mine would be 'There Was A Time', 'I.R.S',and 'Prostitute'.
But that's the thing. Everyone has a couple. That's all you need. How many albums are truly phenomenal top to bottom?

I'd be as happy as a clam if CD2 was just the same as CD1.
I just want it to come out, because there are bound to be a few tunes I really dig.
I don't think CD stands up to AFD or the UYI records, apples to apples. But there are a handful of CD tunes I really like.
That's all I'm hanging around for. Don't expect a brilliant opus, top to bottom. Do think I can get a few tunes I dig.
-
If Axl simply mixed in 2-3 new songs, just like he did in 2002, it would lend some credence to the premise he hasn't given up.
A sign of good faith, if you will.

But I think the only reason we even got what we did is because the label, such as it was, laid all the groundwork.
Now its all on Axl, and that doesn't inspire confidence.
-
OK, just read that entire site, beginning to end.
What a fucking lunatic. And the only one that might be more crazy than he is are any of us that think another album is coming out, ever.

Interesting read.
Yet you read all this stuff, and people insist there is some lost album somewhere. Odd.

Wish the quality was a bit better but this is definitely my favorite '88 bootleg. The Ritz gets praised as "the" old GNR show because it's the one they played on MTV all the time, but this is by far the better show.
I think the 12.7.88 Tokyo show is the best one. Great sound, good performance.
Like it or not, sound quality is big on judging a performance.

Is that as close as they'd agree to be to each other?
Your opinion: Is Axl currently "looking very seriously at what we're doing in that regard"?

My guess is no, but I think it happens now or never, literally.
If they start touring again and all they have is that same "we're still looking at stuff" routine for us, it ain't ever coming out.
