Shuffle Posted November 12, 2009 Posted November 12, 2009 I don't have a cover to supply at the moment, mostly because they would be too numerous, but I'd like to express how much I feel covers are underrated in music today. In the 60s and 70s the line between covers and originals was more blurry, and it had interesting effects. In Soul and Country especially, you simply tried good songs regardless of how many times they had been done. The results had diverse and lasting effects. Today, this "original or die" sensibility has put out music that does its best to deny the past and as such eventually ceases to sound original, and more like anyone who is trying to be hip rather than being it.Great post. Definitely agree.Well, arguably the greatest cover of all time would be Hendrix covering All Along the Watchtower. A personal favourite of mine would be David Bowie's cover of My Death by Jacques Brel...and since I've been on a Dylan kick lately a couple of great Dylan covers: Jim James & Calexico doing Goin' to Acapulco and The White Stripes doing One More Cup of Coffee, lots of others too but I remembered those Quote

The Grateful Dead's version of "Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again" from the album Nightfall of Diamonds is excellent. There may be more versions, but I don't know them so well. Also, I have to give props to my favorite singer at the moment (its really been more than a moment by now,) here's a very young Linda Ronstadt singing "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight":http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w29BaEk0sC0 Quote
