The Velvet Underground, The Stooges, New York Dolls, Ramones, Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, Iggy Pop have all made multiple classic albums and have collectively sold the sum total of shit.Selling 15 mil make it a success, not a classic...although in some cases of course they are classics.I disagree when it comes to sales. It is not a requirement to sell at least 10 million to be considered a classic album, no. The ones you mentioned you are absolutly correct about. But I do think selling 10 mil, does make it a classic album. Just because it is so hard to do, that means you had to appeal to a lot of people. Which as a musician, you hope people like what your doing. Even pop albums that have crossed over the 10 mil mark I would argue are pop classics. It just seems to be that line that doesn't allow bullshit to pass. I have yet to see an artists that isn't "special" to cross that threshold. No Brittany's or other talentless crap has crossed that mark to my knowledge. It is truely rarified air. I was suprised to see some of them that made the list. But my personal feelings about the artists aside, they still qualify for classic pop albums imo. Every single album on that list has a massive following, so it is classic to someone. Who am I to say it isn't just because I don't like it. To sell that amount of albums is a massive feat that should not be understated. But like I said, it isn't the only factor for deciding if an album is classic, but it is what it is. Sixes Posted January 11, 2014 Share Posted January 11, 2014 a lot of them i feel are moments in time when things become a phenomenon...like the dirty dancing soundtrack, the spice girls..or titanic......and those songs, movies and soundtracks may very well hold up and i'm sure hold a special place in millions of people's lives but sales alone aren't what should make something a classic...take something like the stooges fun house...it sold next to nothing but is a classic...has influenced generations...but again, the other side of the coin is, is a classic subjective? is it just an opinion? there's so many factors and depending on what side you're on, you'll find criteria to back your claim...btw, the second spice girls album is a goddamn pop masterpiece Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Or movies like Back to the future or Ghostbusters. They just take the viewer or listener in this case back to the moments they first listened. That is by definition classic is it not? Because they have stood the test of time, or became positive memories from that time. I own the Dirty Dancing soundtrack on vinyl (got it for my wife) and all bs aside it is a great fucking soundtrack. Ya I could live without the Swayze songs, or any other "new" songs that are on it. But the old songs on that album were given a whole second life. One in particular, "Love is strange" by Mickey and Sylvia is a really great blues/early rock song. My band actually plays it (we have a girl singer). But it is really great blues guitar playing that most of us heard from the movie Dirty Dancing. So that alone makes it pretty damn good imo.But yes I agree with you that plenty of influencial or "classic" albums are not all time great sellers. Like or dislike, it was EVERYWHERE for a couple of years. I call that success.I guess I'm suprised more of their music didn't catch on.
