I'm not sure if there was a book; There was a radio show, then this TV show^ (the same cast as the radio show) and then years later and after after Douglas Adams passing, there was a film.

Nah, It was a BBC Radio show in 78, then was adapted as a book in 1979

I think he wrote the original script long ago, back in the 80s or something but it's gone through many rewrites since.

I thought the movie sucked, main reason being that it took the premise and completely hollywood-ized it.

I wouldn't think so considering that he died before the film was made.
