f**k_your_enemy
motley cruebut motley crues music was awful and they never managed to enrage parents the way gnr didI disgree with that... When Motley started out.. they'd have model heads on stage.. blood.. chainsaws and set eachother on fire... then the whole "Shout at the Devil" era hit.... they played with the satanism gimmick.. they had the pentagrams going on.... and parents would ban there kids listening to this "Devil's Music".When GN'R came along... sure there was the drink and the drugs... but Motley and other bands had been doing that for years... So it was just kind of accepted that thats how a "Rock Band" would act.. They also had a pop-rock song "Sweet Child O' Mine" y'kno... some of the parents at that time was into that song... jack99
Motley Crue - but they made incredibly shit music, so who really cares?True, but they got some good fun tunes to get wasted too. It's kinda sad for a rock band to be remembered for everything they did off stage instead of the music and their performences. Btw, Axl used to be more out of control than all of them put together. artfromtex
Motley's music was not shit. i don't see how y'all love GNR so much and can absolutely discredit Motley. on the topic of pissing off and scaring parents, Motley had that market cornered for a few years. whoever said that must be very young. in 1984 the American journalistic TV show 20/20 even did a story on satanism in rock and Motley was the focal point. my own parents threw away my album, tore my posters off the wall and all that stuff afterward. for some reason Motley was always way bigger in America than in Europe. so i assume some of y'all that hate on them are from the other side of the pond. highvoltage
Motley's music was not shit. i don't see how y'all love GNR so much and can absolutely discredit Motley. It's not even that the music is shit... sure, the songs are ok as party anthems, or whatever you want to call them... but if you read any interviews, the guys actually take the music seriously.I'll never forget an article I was reading on Crue, and it had an excerpt of an interview with Vince. He was talking about the lyrics to Primal Scream. It read something like (and i'm completely paraphrasing this here):---------------------Vince: And i'm sick of people sayin' that my lyrics don't mean anything, or that they're tired and cliched... Some of our songs are really deep lyrically. Take Primal Scream for example...Primal scream and shoutLet that mother outYou just gotta say heyDeep. Right.---------------------He just takes himself so seriously, when his music career really is a just one great, big joke.
artfromtex
that song was based on a book that Nikki Sixx read, called "Primal Scream". it was about finding ways to let your inner demons out by finding ways to let your soul have it's "primal scream". he read it during the time just after he kicked heroin and was trying to find other ways of dealing with his issues. here are the complete lyrics:Broke dick dogMy head slung lowTail knocked in the dirtTime and timeOf being toldTrash is all Im worthWhen I was just a young boyHad to take a little griefNow that Im much olderDont put your shit on me(pre-chorus)Grab it and shakeReach down scrape itYou just got to(chorus)Primal scream and shoutLet that mother outYou just gotta say heyPrimal scream & shoutOooh tear it outYou just gotta sayJanou saidMeters are redBlow a neurotic fuseShow a littleA little painUnlock a lotta truthWhen daddy was a young manHis home was livin hellMama tried to be so perfectNow her minds a padded cell, ya(pre-chorus)(solo)Hey man, get out of my faceI deal with my problems at my own paceWith your screwed-down, anti-human viewsDeal with the pressures by playing the bluesIf you wanna live life on your own termsYou gotta be willing to crash and burnScream shout come on come on come onScream shoutof course you chose just the chorus, which is intended to be anthemic.i don't think Vince or any of the guys take themselves to seriously, they know what they are. All Axl did was spit his dummy out when he didn't get his own wayMotley Crue were the real bad boys not Gn'R. All Gn'R did was get drunk, wasted, drugged up and have fights. Crue went into satan crap and all that. Vince was like the crap Huge Heffner for a while, Nikki died twice then shot up again the next day. Motley Crue were 1st so i guess they can't be compared too much to Gn'R 'cos Crue showed Gn'R how it's done. But as far as bad boy rockers go. Nikki Sixx wins hands down! Crue went glam, everyone else went glam. Crue went to a boogie metal style and a biker look on Girls, Girls, Girls, and everyone ditched their pink spandex and traded it in for leather pants. i've always said that the watered down copycats always tarnish the original. it's obviously true. artfromtex
In all likeliness there's probably a lot of fabrication in that book.exaggeration, not fabrication. they're pretty open in the book about having differing memories of what happened, mainly due to the state they were in. one of the things i love about the book is that each member sat down with Neil Strauss alone to give their version. slashs_servant
Motley Crue - but they made incredibly shit music, so who really cares?Incredibly shit ? Why'd they get a number one album than ? I think you should give them abit more creditBritney went number one - does it mean anything?Nah your right it doesnt, but they werent comercialised pop stars like britney spears, and their audience wasnt to a brainwashed 15 - 16 yr old group? So i think that says alot, if a rock band gets num.1 obviously there doing something right ?Sure you can say gnr made better tunes, but Motley crue were the package. I mean motley crue have influenced me more in terms of how i act and how i play. And whats great is, they've gone through so much things, hit rock bottom, they have degraded themselves, and women all around the world, they have abused everything and everyone; and now there still here to share with us their wisdom, which to me is priceless. I mean Axl isn't the most inspiring when it comes to leading by example, he is a great singer, a great song writer, a great frontman, but he is still a dick. And so is vince. neatd99
GNR didn't like to party? What the hell? They drank and did drugs like crazy during the '80s. I think Steven Adler talked about their wild parties in one of his interviews. The first two Motley Crue albums (Too Fast for Love and Shout at the Devil) are decent. After that, their albums became less consistent, but they still had a lot of hit songs (Home Sweet Home, Smokin' In The Boy's Room, Wild Side, Girls Girls Girls, Dr. Feelgood, Don't Go Away Mad, Without You, Kickstart My Heart, and I *guess* Primal Scream.Appetite is better than any album Motley Crue has made, but then again Appetite is better than most (if not all) '80s albums made. Still, Motley Crue were the real trend-setters. I'm not just talking about music, either.......all of their stage theatrics were copied to death. Tommy's spinning drum set and his whole spinning drumsticks thing both come to mind. As for Axl and the gang doing more shit than Motley Crue........I doubt it. The only two things I can think of are the St. Louis riot and Axl's trouble with his neighbor (he pushed a piano out the window or something). I'm also pretty sure Motley Crue lived their music......they lived "Girls Girls Girls" and they definitely experienced "Dr. Feelgood."EDIT: The Crue was definitely more influential than GNR......I know of a lot of bands back then and even today who claim Motley Crue influenced them (including Marilyn Manson and Green Day, surprisingly)......how many bands did GNR influence? Avenged Sevenfold? Dangerous Toys? C'mon. Edited August 4, 2006 by neatd99
