  1. I have mixed feelings on Ron doing that, but I will say that that "Better" video is SO cringey and I am very glad it was shelved. The new member opening is so corny (no doubt they wanted introduce them to the public, but it was so hokey and it included two members that you know Axl wish were still there), followed by live footage where everyone looks cool, but it's moving so fast it's distracting. Axl was trying to take the band in a new musical direction and that video felt too generic for it - the song deserved better (no pun intended).

I agree 100% except are you really shocked "they have done zero new recording as a band"? They've been on tour for the money, Axl wheezes and gasps his way through whatever material he can sort of still handle, and then they all go home to their lives.
I also agree completely r.e. the "new music": they have a handful of (in some cases) 20-plus-year-old recordings that they've been adding more and more layers to and (I guess) plan to release someday.

Yeah, honestly, as soon as I posted it I realized "someone is going to flag me for saying 'shocked,'" and honestly no I'm not. A bit surprised because Susan McKagan said they were recording, yada yada yada, but not shocked and I guess she meant this.

I also think the build up and expectation for a new album is way greater than anything they could possibly meet. There's no way they want to do an album with: Axl's voice limitations, their creative differences, not wanting to risk fighting when a reunion is going well, massive expectations from the public, Axl probably feeling a bit burned from everything that went down with CD, idk. I can't blame them for not wanting to go through with it.

  3. I'm sure this has been discussed in the other thread, but the biggest shock with Slash saying this (to me) was that it means they have done zero recording of new material as a band. And I've always thought this, but I do not see them putting their creative differences aside to do it. I think we can expect drips of new songs here and there until they're all out and then - [shrug] we'll see.

Apparently Tommy wasn't not the most likeable member. There's many emails (MSL documents) where people wanted him out. Only the titles summarizing the emails got out there, sadly the emails themselves have not surfaced. There's some about wanting to fire and/or sue DJ Ashba too. Another about dissolving the band. Interesting shit. Hope they surface one day.

I forgot about those - so wild to me that MSL never ended up getting sued (that we know of).

One big thing was the legal conundrum with Irving Azoff. Axl sued in May 2010 and settled in June 2011. Irv wielded power at Ticketmaster and LiveNation (just merged at the time). That meant Guns could only play clubs and festivals stateside while the proceedings went on. I think they had to make a deal about a certain amount of US dates, with a certain amount of those proceeds going to Azoff.

Forced Axl isn't what you call a happy one.

That's honestly a very good point that I hadn't thought of. Probably why there was a co-sponsorship with Monster.

2011 was when Axl went into nostalgia mode, for both better and worse. He lost his creative edge, yes, but we also started getting more classics back like Estranged and Civil War.

Axl losing interest is one of the saddest things to happen to GN'R in my opinion. I think it had to do with Robin leaving, but who knows. I'm so curious what happened between December 2010 & October 2011.

It really is sad that something like this, kind of a lightening in a bottle great idea that benefits both releases, is something that we can immediately point to and all agree “Well of course they’d never do that…” again, simply on the precedent that it’s a great idea. 😆

Yup - like when they played The Apollo the day before the 30th anniversary of Appetite, plastered posters of the cover all over NY, and then didn't even mention it during the show.

  8. Having watched the trilogy recently I'm actually voting for "November Rain." All three are obviously good, but "Don't Cry" has so many cool moments and while it's still abstract I think I can follow the narrative of it a bit better than the other two.

Also it's just sweet when Slash throws his hat off.
