Near Dark is awesome. A really good proper 80's gorefest. The Fright Night remake is actually pretty good if you can forgive some typically dodgy early 2010's CGI. I really enjoyed it otherwise but one thing that I love about 80's horror is that it all had to be done with proper practical effects. CGI just doesn't work as well which is crazy when you think about it.
Tom Savini was making effects in films like the original Friday the 13th and Maniac (another stone cold classic) back in the 70's and early 80's with a budget of less than $10k (seriously) that absolutely blows away stuff from 20 or 30 years later.
Speaking of Savini, I don't know if you know much about the guy but I'd recommend a quick google of his past work. He was a war photographer in Vietnam and then made a name for himself as the go to guy for gore and splatter effects.
He did the effects on the original Dawn of the Dead, Friday the 13th 1 and 4, The Prowler, The Burning, Maniac, Creepshow 1 and 2 and Day of the Dead amongst others.
There's a great story about when they filmed the head explosion scene in Maniac where he fired a real shotgun through the car windscreen to get the effect. Problem was that they didn't have permits to film as the budget woudn't allow it and firing any gun in New York at the time carried a five year jail term so they had to get the shot then run like fuck and dump the car in the river.
He's also this guy.
