Rap took over because...

I guess music is pretty similiar to clothes, styles and trends come and go. It has nothing to do with how successful the previous hottest things was, some things made are timeless and are not effect by the changes while some will just have their 15 min of fame. People always want renewal even if it means old stuff retouched.

Im sure we'll see a comeback of rock very soon. People want to hear good rock music again. Just look at the Eurovision Song Contest where some freaks from Finland (no offence) won with a hardrock song. Hopefully Gnr and VR will kick off 2007 with a bang! rock3

Rock was going stale in the 80's my friend. All you have to do is look at Poison, Warrant and Motley Crue to see that.

Then came Guns N' Roses! rock3

But forget all that. Rose's personal problems, legal travails and general immaturity can never

overshadow his talent. Axl Rose kicks ass. He descended on the '80s like acid, burning holes in a country

that had become culturally complacent. For anyone with angst, anyone who grew up under Reagan-Bush,

hating suspendered suits, hair-spray rock and synthesizers, Axl Rose was a savior. His angry, paranoid

lyrics, piercing screams and stomping stage presence all acted as antidotes for the made-up go-go

conservatism of the time. He was the anti-Culture Club hero, the flat-haired, bandanna-clad bad boy who

never played by the rules, never tried to look pretty -- the one guy who repeatedly made people listen, then

told them to fuck off. Few rock 'n' rollers -- Johnny Rotten in his prime, Kurt Cobain -- have given the world

a more sincere dedication to pure, authentic anger.

man I really hate rap, put a 'c' at the beginning of rap and what do you get CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HA! How original! Haven't heard that one before!

Put a C before Rock and you get Crock.

Take r, o, c and k out of rock, and put g, a, and y. What do you get ?!

I didn't live through it, and I don't have an idea, but I suppose rap must have taken over just like punk did, it was all about the attitude. You get now all this gangstas with their huge clothes and their crazy haircuts.

Just like punk and reggae left an impact on society and there are still a lot of punks and dudes with dreads, rap will lose popularity, though it will leave such an impact. Rock will eventually be back in the mainstream as it's been for the last 50 years.

Peace

PS: No offense to rap fans, there is some pretty good rap out there

I agree with New Rose, I do like some of Outkasts songs, the tunes are great and Andre 3000 is a lyrical genius, I love Ms. Jackson and Roses

You should get ATLiens, I had my doubts on it since I rarely listen to rap but now I love Outkast.

Tracks like Two Dope Boyz (In a Cadillac), Jazzy Belle, Babylon etc. are just plain wicked.

I think Indie Rock took over in the 90s, bands like Oasis, The Verve, Blur, Morrisey, Ian Brown etc.

None of them were ever popular in the US, except maybe The Verve for 5 minutes.

There is no reason at all, people get bored of things, rock had been around for a very long time so people started to look for something new. Rap is far from where it was in the early 90s now, it's mpore about the lifestyle and all that then the music. It's funny how some people on here consider the 90s to be what ruined rock, the 80s was far far worse.

a clueless comment.

Oasis have sold about 10 million albums in the US.

Be Here Now reached number 2 in the US charts

Whats the story morning glory reached number 4

the rest of their albums all entered the top 20.

hardly the mark of an Unpopular band.

The Verve hardly had any success, Bittersweet Symphony was their biggest single hit in The US which reached number 12.

as much as I like correcting you, it's hardly relevant as the US market has and always will be a total joke.

It could be a regional thing, none of them were ever popular where I live. I've never heard any of them on the radio.

I agree that rap took over because rock became shit.. with bands like oasis, the verve, blur and prodigy being the only other alternative to bands like pearl jam, nirvana, and stp, it was something I think everybody seen comming.. but without the help of bands like anthrax and aerosmith, I just dont think that rap would have been able to make it through the door. I actually stopped listening to music until I rediscovered guns n' roses in 96... but I feel the death of rap will come like disco.. it'll get ugly.. people will realise that it's all commercialised crap, that they're just lining the pocket's of people who really have no real artistic creation in any of the music they do, (except a very few)... the beats will continue to slowly sound more and more the same.. the producer's will end up in jail for god knows what and how many counts of it... most of the artists'll lose everything they have, because their manager's have been fuckin 'em and they've been too fucked up to see it.. people'll start throwing out their ying yang twins CD's and burning their lil jon shirts.. fake platinum chains and gold teeth'll line the streets of new york and california.. the smoke from everybodies white tee's and wife beater's'll fill the air as the fire's light the street's.. I think as more and more bands like slipknot, and mudvayne, even staind and other bands like them... and teh resurgent of bands like guns n' roses and black sabbath, rock and metal slowly are growing and making it's way back to the top... I have friends that listen to rap.. they're little wanna be gangsta's... but when I put in slipknot or mudvayne or even some all that remains... they're really into the beat and tempo of the songs.. one of my friends, Chris..all my slipknot CD's end up in his truck.. cause it sounds like nothing else on a 15... but they even also listen to 104.5, a little classic rock station that plays lynard skynard, and three dog night... shit like that.. they even listen to guns n' roses.. so, I think aslong as we true rock fans stay true to the music we like, and dont allow ourselves be blinded by the bullshit, rock will come back.. just remember, nothin makes a beat sound better than an actual drummer.. and the only thing to make him sound better is a real band with him... fuck rap

Rap took over because everythin had been done in rock.

Everything? I think it'll be a loong time until 'everything' is done in all forms of music. On topic, I can't think of any good rock bands at that time. Now that I think about it, I wasn't even into rock much back then. I was very much into Biggie and Tupac and whatever was being played on the radio. It doesn't matter what 'rock people' do, in my opinion. The only time rap will die is when poverty, death, love, hate and whatever other human emotion and situation dies as well. Same goes with any other form of music, yo.

Yeah well rap has changed a lot since the 90's.

Something else should take over because rap is fucking up now.

Mainstream Rap is better than Mainstream Rock atleast.

I wouldn't say so. Look at the crap people listen to these days...Chamillionaire, Lil Jon, Chingy... its some absolutely ridiculous crap. "Drop it Like Its Hot" ?? Tupac must be rolling in his grave to see how much his friend has degraded himself.

Mainsream rock like Fall Out Boy, Panic! At the Disco.... it will never be classic rock; that's true. I used to hate so-called "pop rock", but even then I had to admit that some bands are creative and even though they'll never hold a candle to bands like Gn'R and Zeppelin, they are better than a lot of other worthless bands out there.. for example, Good Charlotte.

I think "Drop It Like It's Hot" is brilliant, like all his singles from that album. Of course I type this after putting some System of a Down on, a group who are groundbreaking and awe-inspiring.

But if you look at it purely in MTV terms, I still prefer the Rap scene, mostly because of the presence of Pharrell, he's undeniable and I think he is holding Rap up in place of Eminem. And the most beautiful thing about him is how he's blurring lines, we don't even notice anymore when he's working with white or black artists. Overall I think Pharrell Williams is the most important man in music right now. If it weren't for him, Dirty South would rule and the mainstream would truly be in bad shape.

Haha then I think we have different ideas of what is good rap. I think of good rap as rap from the 90's, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Tupac., The Fugees..they actually rapped about real stuff and the music wasn't based around a catchy beat or heavily produced string instrumentals...it was based on their voices and ability to actually tell a story. Rappers today don't tell stories... they just sing about stupid stuff like girls and partying. Rap from the 90's wasn't meant to be played on the dance floor... it was meant to show you a different side of things.
