You can watch online: BBC - GUNS N'ROSES Video Highlights

Welcome to the Jungle, Axl's sounds like he could use extra oxygen.

This is the 1st decent video of 'The Blues' since Rio all those years ago. I still rate the Rio performance as the best by the new line up.

Appetite for Destruction

High drama and low cunning at Reading Festival on Friday. Guns N' Roses took to the Main stage late, but delivered a bombastic run through their greatest hits and numbers from their Chinese Democracy album. The performance featured much loved favourites including Welcome to the Jungle, Mr. Brownstone, It's So Easy and November Rain and no small amount of pyrotechnics.

Having come onstage over an hour late, it was unlikely the band would complete an epic 25 track set list. At midnight, event organisers were forced to invoke a Council-imposed curfew, which prompted complaints from Axl Rose and threats of the band's non-appearance at the Leeds festival the following night. Guns 'N Roses headline performance ended in the bizarre sight of the band staging a sit-down protest while drummer Frank Ferrer repeatedly played the intro to Paradise City and Axl wielded a megaphone. A compelling spectacle from one of the world's most controversial rocks bands.

November Rain:

The guitar solo just before the main solo is terrible, and sounds like some vague attempt.

I don't think it's Dj Ash playing it either, it could well be the guy with black hair.

Credit to Bumblefoot, for the finnal solo, as that was ok (in a Buckethead sort of way).

That's 3 guitarists doing the work of 1 ex guitarist. None of them sounded as good.

Axl sounds alot better on the slow songs like November Rain.

If there is a new album. Slow songs might be the way to go.

But Axl has sounded fantastic on most of the songs this tour. Seemed to have had an off-night.

I wish there was a pro shot video of shackler's revenge, too bad theyre not going to play it live anymore it seems.

That song is best viewed as a Buckethead song with Axl on vocals.

Do they ever play 'If the World' as that's total Buckethead. It's Buckethead that makes the song what it is.

imagine how much pro shot footage uncle Axl has at home... and none of us are allowed it. i think thats kind of unfair considering we fund the band lol haha 25 years of footage and all we get is a few official and unofficial dvd's. now thats why i have every bootleg available on the net!!! maybe bbc can stop being assjockeys and show the rest of the concert so we can watch something we are usually deprived of

LMAO you are so ignorant! The "guy with black hair" is Richard Fortus and he nails the first solo alright. My only problem with him is his style, it's like he's fucking his guitar 24/7 but that's his style hehe..

Haha fucking his guitar :rofl-lol: Quality.

That post might be a bit ignorant but to be fair 4tus has never played that solo well. I'm not a hater - I have and had said a million positive things about all the current guitarists but 4tus certainly does not nail the first NR solo. Its the vibrato he puts on the first section bends - sounds fucking terrible. The best part is at the end when he reverts to his own style. Which speaks volumes.

I personally think Ron should play ALL the lead guitar parts in the current set and on all old songs and covers. He should be THE lead guitarist of this band until such time they are playing new music. And not new as in new released old Bucket and Robin stuff - but new songs that these 3 guys have written the parts to.

Just cane back from the weekend at reading. Have to say Axl did him self no favours! However I must say I have seen the band in 2001, 06 and this time this was the best I have seen from the band! Axl was on form the band was so fucking tight! Rocket queen was my fav!! Also. DJ AShba is what the band was missing I thought he was excellent all my mates said how good he was! I'm not too botherd that they didn't play the final songs as I'm seeing them again in a few months!! I thought axl was going to have a fit when someone nicked his hat during nightrain also did one the guitarist hair caught fire?? Anyway GNR were the best headliners .... Ash a close second a great weekend!'

I was at the show so I figured I would add my voice to all of this. I was also sober and only one person behind the barrier just to Ashba’s side so I had a really good view of what went down.

For starters, the set was not even ready on time for them to go on, only by about 10 minutes, but I figured it was worth mentioning.

Bumble appeared at about 10pm I think, waved to the crowd, then turned up again at the left of the stage and started chatting with the tech guys, he seemed happy but at the same time a little bit anxious because the crowd was booing by this point. He tried to say something into a mic but I didn’t hear anything, then signalled that it would only be a minute and the crowd chanted “Are you Axl in disguise?”

The lights went down about 20 minutes later, some cheered, others booed, I went fucking mental, this was my first time seeing the band and seeing DJ get in front of that screen sent me into fucking overdrive. I think me and him had a little moment during the first verse, I was the only one really moving around in the part I was in and he pointed and laughed, probably because I was midway through my orgasm face. The guy is a terrific performer, he took the crowds reaction to him, which in the beginning was basically “Fuck you,” and threw it right back at them by asking for more. His playing and crowd interaction was some of the best I have ever seen from a guitarist, it makes you wonder what he would be like as a front man.

The performance was nothing short of phenomenal in my view. The band was on fucking fire and didn’t drop the ball once and had won the crowd around me over by the end of It’s So Easy. Axl was a little bit hard to hear until Brownstone but that’s to be expected considering how many instruments are being channelled through the speakers. But when he came through he was sensational, I have never seen a lead singer with that much conviction behind everything he does on stage, fault the guy if you want but on that stage he gave everything. To name just a few, I doubt I will ever forget the anger he sang with on Sorry “To hell with the pressure, I’m not caving in,” the scream on LALD and his delivery on Rocket Queen and YCBM. My personal highlight was This I Love, I knew the guy could still hit the notes but I had no idea he could sing like that, the youtube videos do not do it justice, I was stunned at just how good he sounded, so were the people around me.

Tommy was a real surprise, from the youtube videos of other concerts he doesn’t seem to do much but the guy was incredible and really got the crowd pumped and his bass sounded amazing throughout, especially on YCBM and RQ. I didn’t get to see much of Fortus and Bumble as I was on the other side of the stage but when they wandered over it was incredibly hard to take your eyes off them, Fortus could hammer the fuck out of his guitar all day and I would gladly watch and Bumble looks so caught up in the moment you can’t help but get sucked in. Frank killed it on the drums, especially on November Rain and DJ’s solo spot. Pitman (The guy needs a solo spot) and Dizzy were fun to watch, especially Pitman, fuck knows what that guy was on but I want some.

They all seemed happy on stage together, smiles, jokes etc. I saw absolutely no evidence of Bumble being pissed with the late start, in fact him and Axl seemed tight as hell. I got the impression they may have had a chat to clear the air but that’s just speculation. It was great to see them all band together when the sound was pulled. People who say they aren’t a band, in my view, don’t know shit.

When Axl walked off at the end of Nightrain my insides went completely hollow because I went from the biggest high to the lowest low in a matter of seconds. He pointed to the side of the stage and said something like “If that’s the game you want to play then I guess we are done here, night folks,” then threw the mic over his shoulder. I don’t know if that’s on youtube of not.

Ashba came down to the crowd as the band played the song out and I could see Fernando running round the side of the stage talking to people. Bumble jokingly put a hand over his eyes and looked over the stage trying to see Axl. They ended and I saw Fernando saying something to DJ and the band left. At this point I was fucking pissed but I didn’t know who to aim it at because it wasn’t as if Axl had just up and left.

He came back out and ranted into his mic, now cut off, for a few minutes. If anyone has any idea what he said please let me know. The first proper Axl rant in years and we don’t get to hear it  The band then all came back out and started walking around the stage hoping the sound would come back, they were going to play Better because I could hear the drum track being played. Axl either got the megaphone first and said what he said, all I heard was something like “Stand our ground” or he talked to Beta first. He seemed seriously pissed, not at her, it just seemed like he had to vent.

The crowd had figured out that the music had been cut and were calling for it to be turned back on and started singing Paradise City and chanting “You fat bastard,” at the sound guy who then pointed the band as if saying “Their fault, not mine.”

The band did their acoustic moment then came down to the front to say thank you for sticking around. On my side it was Axl, then DJ then Fortus and lastly Tommy who said “We want to play but they wont let us.” It was incredibly cool of them to do that, it felt like it was us and them vs Reading Festival, united against the bullshit. The crowd stared chanting “Guns N’ Roses” which I would guess meant a lot to the band considering all the shit they get. It was a proper, old fashioned sit in, the band sat on stage and didn’t leave and neither did we, the crowd was seriously fucking pissed and was on the verge of jumping the barrier at one point.

The odd thing is, I would gladly take that ending to the show over an actual encore, it was just that special, the connection between band and fans, there wasn’t a barrier, just a bunch of people all angry at the same person/thing. What made it even better was the fact that the show was, as I said earlier, sensational.

Personally I think there is fault on both sides, Guns shouldn’t have been late, but at the same time what the hell did Reading expect? And the organisers should not have gone public with their conversations with Guns and their demand for them to do as their told, that stuff should stay between both sets of managers and not spoken in the public domain. They also shouldn’t have cut the sound, although I understand why they did, they could have said Guns can play Paradise City and end the show, that’s a an extra 7 minutes, surely that’s not a big ask? At the time it very much did feel like a power play that soured the whole show and, to an extent, the whole festival. I understand the curfew but I feel the whole thing could have been handled so much better. It felt like both sides were just poking an already angry bear, the Festival organisers by making their conversations with the band public knowledge and, I assume, by constantly dangling the cut off switch above the bands head and Guns by not hitting the stage at a decent time.

Overall though, it was one of the greatest nights of my life.

If anyone has any questions that haven’t be answered I will try and help.

From my two friends that have just got back from reading:

mate guns n roses were fucking brilliant. Couldnt really fault their performance and enthusiasm....only problem was the diabolical crowd. Id say about 1/10 of the people there were actually cheering for them, the rest were fucking dichead pricks who came just to boo them because they think theyre hot. Whats not hot is waiting over an hour just to boo someone who "isn't slash". Dj ashba was also awesome. Oh btw this bit and the paradise city singalong was a little highlight of the gig =]

the crowd hated guns so much it was ridiculous, like literally no fans there, most of the people were shouting things like 'fuck axl'. you probably would've lamped someone if you were there!

Good that they enjoyed the show. Not good how much people hated Guns.

"You want some more music or not? Because every time we come play........some fucking piece of shit.....always pulls the show. You want another song?"

Dots are for what I can't make out. The thing is I don't know whether Axl was mad at the promoter or some of the audience or the promoter so the 'fucking piece of shit' could refer to an audience member or the promoter.

Ashba was pretty much escorted out! Security were none too happy with him .

That's really not 100% accurate. There were a bunch tossers shouting "wanker" and shit like that at the stage, but by and large people were loving it.... there were even quite a few people singing along to the CD tracks.

Wasn't it GNR's own security who stopped him?
