The explanation for Axl's weaker voice in 2011/2012 is very simple:

[sarcastic mode on]

- youtube videos are to blame - Axl still sounds as good as always

- Axl still has all the 2010 rasp in him, he just decides to save his voice, all the time...

- Axl is much older now

[sarcastic mode off]

That being said in a particular show in 2012 - Philly 27 Feb '12 - Axl just pulled some incredible vocals with plenty of rasp. How did he do it remains a mystery to me... Just check this out - almost '10 alike - agree?

Why the fuck can't he sing like this every show!?

Ill just leave this here

from the infamous sydney show, one of the best performances of Better ever.

Axl isn't out of breath at all, he has raw power in his voice and its a flawless performance:

He CAN still sound like that which is evident in the '12 videos, where he sounds better than in '11 but not as good as in '10.

Either he is saving his voice because singing with that full on rasp he did in 2010 is NOT healthy for the vocal chords, or he is limited by something else.

Axl sounded great back then, however I think his voice now works on some of the new songs a bit better, the true test is when he performs IRS/if the world/prostitute again.

He CHOSE to sing clean in 2001-2002 and he CHOSE to make a massive effort to sing with rasp like he used to in 2006-2010. I think it's fairlyu likely he made this change because of the huge backlash online against the clean voice.

It's only been 2 years since 2010 and he can still sing hard when he wants to which means, again, he's CHOOSING to sing with clean falsetto instead of screeching.

Dizzy has just suggested the current band will be together for the next 20 years. If Axl wants a chance in hell of still singing Jungle in 5, 10, 15.....years then there's no way he can sing like 2010 at every show. If he can preserve a strong falsetto he has far more chance of carrying on than if he rasps it.

That said, I hope he brings out the rasp for live streams, tv, new album launch etc. We have all this pro shot from recent shows with weak vocals, such a shame it wasn't all from 2010.

Maybe he felt like he "owed one" to Philly after the 2002 riot.

Same with how Montreal 2010 saw him put in extra effort, jumping off of things and rasping on songs he usually wouldn't (November Rain). That was GNR's first time back there since the 1992 riot.

In some moments it really seems like he is trying to preserve his voice, but we never know.

No doubt something happened with Axl in the period of the Abu Dhabi 2010 until the Rock In Rio 2011.

He decided to kinda not give a fuck? His voice is better now than the RIR atrocity that being said.

It is a possibility.

Maybe it was a year without doing any exercise or training his voice and so currently cannot use raspy voice all the time. :shrugs:

For me, not going to work the whole day and sitting through that entire live stream - that was the lowest point in recent times. I'm glad that it's been proved since, that in terms of Axl's performance, it was a one-off. Estranged was fabulous though.

People saying that the rest period between Abu Dhabi and Rock in Rio was likely what took its toll upon his voice. What do you have to say about 2009/ then? He'd not been performing for even longer before the Asia tour, and he was a wee bit shaky in Taipei and Seoul but by the time they got to Japan, only a few shows into the tour, he was sounding incredible to the extent that he even sang Nightrain an octave higher than usual in Tokyo (although, there were weak points in those shows, like Prostitute).

Axl's had way longer to build up momentum after a far shorter gap this time around, so does that mean that there are/were other forces at play apart from being out of practice?

The saddest thing for me as a fan, is that in 2010 where Axl had the 'golden voice' there's no high-quality recorded shows. What a killer it'd have been a DVD show recorded back then - like the 02 shows in London w/Duff....

maybe it's a medical issue ???
