It depends on whether we're talking about the books or the movies.

Tolken never interested me all too much. I read the first book and the second of The Lord of the Rings - let me tell you, boring as shit. It was bad. There is no way in hell I'm trying again. I gave him two chances, and it was like reading a textbook. The Hobbit was pretty good though except for the ending.

I liked the Harry Potter books but it may be just because I grew up with them. The movies didn't interest me all too much, with the exception of maybe the first. I was really young back when it came out but old enough to comprehend the book.

I haven't read them in years, but I liked the Harry Potter books more than the Tolkien books. I liked the Lord of the Ring films better than the Star Wars films though.

Star Wars

The Dark Tower...but I voted Harry Potter.

I don't understand why The Dark Tower is so underrated. I always thought this fantasy stuff was for idiots, but the DT series were just awesome.

I think it's because they're by Stephen King and he's mostly known as a horror writer.

I've read a lot of Stephen King books and I like his writing, but it's always seemed out of place to think he'd write those style of books. So I've never read the series, even though The Man With No Name is the epitome of cool and King somehow references Velco Fly in the series.

The "God Drums" in a rundown city from book three is the drumbeat from "Velcro Fly", or at least that's what it sounds like to one of the main characters.

If we are talking movies then the answer is easy. Star Wars > Lord of the Rings > Harry Potter though the last two movies were great, made the other six look like shit.

For books, Harry Potter. No contest. Tolkien may helped revolutionized the fantasy genre but Rowling is a much better writer. Her writing suffered after book five but I think she was pressured to finish the series on time because they were catching up fast with the movies.

Sure he is, but that doesn't impair the quality of the DT books.

LOTR will always have a special place in my heart, there's a kind of wistful feeling one gets whilst reading them which I don't think I've ever found matched by any other fantasy series. I think I'm going to have to tip my hat over to A Song Of Ice and Fire though for creating an incredibly rich, complicated and detailed fictional universe with an absolutely compelling narrative which manages so much more than just "These guys are good- these guys are bad." I don't think I've ever read a book where regardless of the outcome I may be both potentially pleased and devastated before...

Tell me, Graeme - what do your elf eyes see?
