IMHO I thought IRobot was a better film about AI....... When I saw Ex-Machina I felt a bit depressed, and I think that was sort of the message that the director wanted to send. There's also a quote that I think Oscar Isaac said, something along the lines of "human race being set for extinction and AI robots looking back on us the same way we look at fossil skeletons now". It was the entire point of the movie, IMO.I really liked I, Robot, but in comparison with this one, it is more of a "eat your popcorn" film.
