The new music is fantastic. Everything it could be and better, but there is no way it should have taken 10 years to produce. I love GNR and Axl is a giant among musicians. I can understand why the others left too. I met Slash back in 1996. We talked a bit about the break up. I did not push him at all. I asked a question he answered. Basically, he said Axl has no idea what he wants the record to be. I could tell it bothered him alot about band but he seemed to accept it. Even the UYI albums took way to long to make. They are fantastic but way over produced. I asked Slash about that too. He said the early versions of the songs were simple rock songs till Axl started tinkering with them. In the end I will buy the albums when they come out. See the shows when they tour. GNR is more than Axl, but Axl drives it.

Hey youre a great writer man...i respect your opinion, but mostly disagree, i know most of you guys are going to torch me for this but whatever...

I'm glad axl has found something that works for him and most of you, but i just don't get anything out of listening to those songs...IRS is so damn strange, its like 5 songs mixed into 1, like someone before said, he's created a completley new style of bipolar songs, jumping from bluesy soul to hard rock to then go to tremolo picking soloes. And yes, i am looking at Guns N Roses through the Classic Guns N Roses Lens, you know why? because according to Axl its still Guns N Roses, and actually they still call themselves Guns N Roses, its like if someone sold you a marihuana plant and later on you found out it was just a damn tomatoe plant...I guess i was expecting a new Apetite, not exactly the same, but more evolved edgy rock like music, not into a complete opposite direction, the music ive heard doesnt do it for me, i guess from my point of view, Guns N Roses, the Real Guns, the ones that got high with Mr.Brownstone and Partied in Paradise City, the ones i truley came to this forum for, are long gone, and ive just found that out, with hearing all of this...

As Vintage GNR Fan, I am Sadly Dissapointed

As a Person Who Wanted to Hear Axl and Co, Im Glad theyve found they're own direction

Oh yeah almost forgot, how could you say Axl is more talented than Zeppelin!!!???...Never heard something coming from Axl that tops any live performance of SIBLY...

I will admit, listening to new GNR material is a nerve racking experience. Since I am such a fan, my expectations are sky high and over the years, I've romanticized the unknown material so much that it becomes difficult to actually accept the song in reality. So when I heard I.R.S., Better and T.W.A.T., I didn't know what to think at first. It's difficult not to look at new material through a GNR lens of old. Wanting to hear another Sweet Child, Paradise City or Estranged is not my fault, it's just what being a GNR fan waiting for new material expects. But to truly understand the genesis of Chinese Democracy, you have to let go of your expectations as a fan and look at this thing through the eyes of the creator -W.Axl Rose. For once you do that, it makes complete sense why this new band sounds so much different than the band of old. It needed to be this way.

Axl knows he can go on stage and sing all of the classics from yesterday, so why try and re-write similar versions of songs he could never top? Those songs are classics and they represent moments in Axl's life that are over. He is no longer riding the nightrain. Rather he is 44 years old and has gone through a lot of personal suffering and loss in his life. The lyrics of the new material seem to reflect and mirror his abject suffering. But Axl is the only singer that can deliver such sullen songs in such a beautiful way. His voice and lyrics seem directly linked to his tortured soul; and he sort of sings the way we all wish we could if we were to express the pain of our own lives. By combining heavy rock elements with soulful lyrics and the most unprecedented voice in music, you get something very special, something that can only be called Guns N Roses.

Axl Rose will live and die by this musical dichotomy. With Chinese Democracy we are going to get the next chapter in Axl Rose's vision for Guns N Roses. Like any good series of books or movies, it's boring if we made the same journey over and over again. While Slash and Co. were clearly keen for creating more Appetite for Destructions, Axl didn't want to go there anymore. After hearing the new creations, I am very happy he broke away. We would never be listening to songs like Better or TWAT if it was just Izzy and Slash writing. Some people say that the old guys would have made a better album. Who knows? But what we have coming our way soon is going to be something special. Hearing Axl, older and wiser, composing tracks like Better, tracks that have that timeless appeal and modern, yet classic, feel at the same time, you know it's going to take over the musical world.

And when it's all said and done, when all the material is out and you put all of W.Axl Roses material against any other performers; whether Rock, Rap, Classical, New Age, Pop...etc...there will be nobody that comes even close to his level of talent. Not the Stones, not The Doors, not Zepplin, not Bon Jovi, not Aerosmith, the only one that comes close is Enrique (just kidding). The wait is coming to an end, and it will be sad when it's over because this wait has sort of bonded us all (in misery albeit). But at least the nay sayers will eat their words when Axl returns. Sucks to be Velvet Revolver.

Where did Bon Jovi come from?

Nobody even comes close to Axl's level of talent? I sense sarcasm. And here too:

I've only listened to IRS so I can't comment on Better or TWAT. From the songs I've heard so far this isn't a drastic departure from classic GN'R. It is a departure yes, but not as large as some people make out. VR is a departure from classic GN'R as well, maybe more than Axl's stuff. VR's sound on many songs can be very computerized or metallic and it's something I don't much care for. I feel the old band could've done most of Axl's new songs quite easily...at least what we've heard. There is lots we still haven't heard yet.

you were fine until the last paragraph. I doubt one release by Axl's band will haunt VR in any way. VR will keep on rocking, and does not live or die by what some other artist releases. You can't stop the Big Machine.

As for The Stones, Zeppelin, Aerosmith, etc not touching what Axl puts out.

You're right. They are too far above it.

Too long to read... besides I was burnt out on your "Giving up" posts a long time ago ...

So, I found myself going "blah, blah, blah" while trying to get through the first paragraph but, that's just me apparently.

in the words of mj "You are not alone, I am here with you..."

I'd like to criticize the mighty one if I'm able.

Axl knows he can go on stage and sing all of the classics from yesterday, so why try and re-write similar versions of songs he could never top?

I don't think I'm the only one who thinks "There Was A Time" is disappointingly similar to "Estranged". Personally, I can't get over the fact that the verse is close to a carbon-copy of Tom Petty's "Mary Jane's Last Dance".

But Axl is the only singer that can deliver such sullen songs in such a beautiful way. His voice and lyrics seem directly linked to his tortured soul; and he sort of sings the way we all wish we could if we were to express the pain of our own lives.

Have you ever listened to Morrissey, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Marvin Gaye, Layne Staley, Jeff Buckley, Brian Wilson, Trent Reznor, Billie Holiday, Muddy Waters, Paul Butterfield, any of the blues greats really...

Axl is a tremendous vocalist, but you are giving him more credit than he deserves. Sometimes it's all too obvious that members of this forum are into Guns N' Roses more than music. There is nothing singularly spectacular about Axl's vocals on these songs, he is Axl and he is singing well. To say that no other singers can give sullen songs a beautiful portrayal is ridiculous and ignorant to the wealth of great music outside of Guns N' Roses.

And I can sing about my troubles just fine.

While Slash and Co. were clearly keen for creating more Appetite for Destructions, Axl didn't want to go there anymore.

So he is instead returning to UYI, albeit with modern production techniques.

Hearing Axl, older and wiser, composing tracks like Better, tracks that have that timeless appeal and modern, yet classic, feel at the same time, you know it's going to take over the musical world.

Simply unrealistic.

This prediction is obscene. If you told this to W. Axl Rose, he would laugh at you. It makes me sad to see the great innovators of the past be more and more forgotten. The Rolling Stones created hard rock as we know it, The Doors had an entirely original sound and Jim Morrison's lyrics defied previous conventions, Led Zeppelin created more great music in a decade than Axl could create in his lifetime at this rate, as for Bon Jovi, what the fuck are you thinking putting them in that sentence? And once again, tell Axl he is going to surpass Aerosmith and he will have a good laugh himself.

Sucks to be Velvet Revolver.

How so? I think it would suck worse to be part of a creative vision you have no belief in.

I am not a fan of the leaked songs, I don't think they are all that original and I think they are mainstream in all the wrong ways. I still look forward to Chinese Democracy, and I hope I will love it as well, but this kind of ridiculous praise makes me far less eager to advocate the new Guns N' Roses, some of you honestly seem fucking crazy.
