Glasgow Scotland

Now I know that this is the "wrong section" or whatever but seriously, how many people are gonna look in on the gigs section just to find out how the Glasgow gig went? The point being more people need to take notice.

This gig was a landmark in the history of Guns N Roses, it was the band's first concert in front of a Scottish audience (who are constantly told that they are the best audiences in the world). I don't think any of them were expecting half the reaction they got last night.

We got into the show at just after 6:30, (thanks to the fantastic queue skipping skills of my friend CraigC) and got to a position maybe 15 feet in front of the stage for the opening act "Towers of London". Craig had said previously that they were like a modern day Sex Pistols and they did not disappoint. Incredibly loud, they packed an old fashioned kind of energy and rebellion which i had never seen in a support act before. If they were nervous at opening for Guns N Roses then they certainly didn't show it.... Leaping around the stage and nailing every note of their nihilistic performance. I would definitley consider seeing them again.

After this the 3 of us went to get a drink in the Harry Ramsden's Express. and we sat around and waited for the imminent arrival of Bullet For My Valentine.

With Bullet I did not know what to expect, having never listened to any of their records before. And all the bashing that went on about them on this board did not leave me hopeful. I was therefore pleasantly surprised that this band kicked ass live :D. They had some thoroughly haunting guitar work, as well as some really aggressive and heavy stuff. Their singing was versatile enough to keep me entertained and the audience were surprisingly warm and welcoming to them and i think this was reflected in their performance, they seemed comfortable enough. they dedicated one of their songs to Guns N Roses which got them even more kudos in my books and i have to congratulate them on winning over at least one unsuspecting fan last night, me.

During Bullet's set we were even closer than we were during Towers of London and so despite the deadly heat and thirst which was beginning to set in, we were unsure whether or not to go back to HR's and lose our place. Eventually we did and we waited for half an hour in there. I didn't eat anything basically because the food looked and smelled like shit but Craig and Ben did.

After this came the worst part of the night, the waiting game. Standing there in the ever increasing number of people in an unbearably hot hall, getting showered in pints and listening to (arguably good) music that you don't want to hear being blasted over the tannoy was not my (i'm claustrophobic) idea of fun. A huge pint war started up as the crowd got more and more agitated, and the chants of "Guns N Roses" mingled with boos and roars of disapproval got even louder. This went on until ten o clock, a full hour. But then the lights dimmed and the rumble of classical music over the tannoy silenced the crowd and we all stared expectantly at the stage, Craig turned round with a huge grin on his face, A seasoned concert goer even at 16 you could tell he was prepared.

I saw the lank hair and black bowler hat of one Robin Finck as he allowed the opening notes of WTTJ to ricochet of his guitar to a tumultous roar from all present. As the rest of the band ripped out from the backstage to surround him and Axl ran out to the very front, letting out a scream of "D'you Know where the Fuck you are?" The crowd answered with a roar of approval, we knew where we were allright. the build-up finished in an explosion of pyrotechnics and the SECC went wild. Craig pelted off to the front, fighting his way through a mass of jumping people, Axl gazed out over the crowd stunned at the reaction. even about 20 feet back and beyond people were jumping around like crazy. I was doing my claustrophobic best because i was loving every minute of it as Axl tore through the vocals with an Illusion esque rasp which more than made up for the 2002 helium whine.

I expected a bit of let up for the "when you're high" bit but none came, people jumped around same as ever so I just carried on, having now been separated from my friends and being out in the middle of the melee about 20 feet from the stage. The ending notes of WTTJ Died.

There was virtually no break before It's So Easy and the band nailed the song, the crowd going even crazier than before, thousands of fists raising their middle fingers in the air for the line " Why don't you Just Fuck off?!" I was finding it very tiring but i couldn't care less as i was thrown about like mad, the people nearest the stage were definitley way worse than me and I knew that Craig was in there somewhere.

As the final notes of ISE rang out and the last of the pornographic images on the screens above the band faded away Axl called us all to attention.

"Hey hey, whoa, hang on a second. I want to thank you all for waiting for so long. And we thoroughly appreciate this reaction. We Love you! (huge cheer) Hell I'm Scottish! (Massive roar) You're totally insane (shit eating grins of agreement all round) but some people down the front here are getting really fucking smashed, I'm seeing people having to be carried out and stuff, now the show only just started and we want people to have a good time tonight (roar of approval) Everybody try and take a half step back." We did as he said, i was wowed... it was like Donington 88 all over again!

Frank Ferrer (fantastic replacement by the way) then thundered into Mr Brownstone which in turn gave way to Live and Let Die, the amazing pyrotechnics dazzling the audience.

Better was the best performance i've ever seen of it and it's really special when other people know the words too... I was standing next to a long haired ginger guy with a bandana and a baseball cap and he was word perfect too, Rock on! It was recieved warmly and well deserved too, it's an awesome song.

After this came Finck's solo which didn't impress overly but all was forgiven as he launched into Sweet Child O Mine. It's easy to see how much of an anthem this song has become over it's many years out there and the crowd still loves it.

After this i got muddled as to what order songs were played, it just seemed like a big collage of fantastic playing, one good song after another... Richard's solo was amazing, that guy is a guitar god! and Don't cry was sung by a lot more people than in Ireland. YCBM was fantastic, full of action and liveliness, ferrer doing it much justice on the drums and Ron's solo was one of the most impressive of the night. KOHD was much longer than i'd ever heard it but it was more than worth it, we were so loud on the "I sing one, you sing one" bit. Axl was in a great mood, joking and laughing, especially when some woman threw her bra at him and he joked about having some cereal bowls with "Scottish Milk" in them now....that made me laugh. The band's little jams have developed into fantastic displays of collaboration and musicianship and i was really enjoying them too. Especially Dizzy's one before The Blues which incidentally blew the Rio 2001 vesion away :P rock1

I had to go and get water during Beautiful but i got back in there just as Out Ta Get me began, packed with attitude (One worrying thing was Acl had his hand over his crotch as he screamed You can BITE me) Which made me wince a bit. I fought my way down to where Ben was standing, (about 15 feet from the stage) just as November Rain Kicked off. Craig came back up and joined us for it and it was just so atmospheric. The crowd had calmed down a lot by this point (the heat had probably got to them) and it was very relaxing and beautiful. Richard's Solo blew Slash's original out of the water, but Finck's left a lot to be desired. We once again went crazy during the outtro where Ron Impressed so much on the closing solo. and the crowd chanted the ominous "Don't you think that you need somebody" ad lib. After this Izzy came out for an impressive rendition of Think about you which was followed by a Rolling Stones-esque Used To Love Her. Patience provided a "Lighters in the Air" moment and then Nightrain got the crowd going, with Richard and Izzy impressing, Izzy being (as craig admirably said) "One smooth motherfucker"

They went off for around 5 minutes before playing Madagascar which was probably the most recognised of the new songs due to the MTV performance, many people knowing it if not actually the words.

Paradise city closed after an impressive solo from robin encompassing "Somewhere over the Rainbow."

Izzy rejoined the group for this as the crowd went mental one last time, i caught some confetti too which was pretty cool.. During the last few songs Ron was wearing a bandana which was pretty awesome!

The band got their standing ovation and Axl said "Hope to see you again real soon, thank you so much Glasgow, Good night."

This has been too long so i'll leave it there but seriously, Concerts don't come ANY better..... THis was flawless.

Guest Apollo

great review.

maybe next time leave out lines like:

"During the last few songs Ron was wearing a bandana which was pretty awesome"

But other than a few cheesy lines like that, a very informative review- thanks.

A bit off topic but i thought i would post this, makes things clearer ;)

Rons reply to me this morning about the Fortus thing:

<< I do have one quick question, its going round mygnr that you and Richard have had some problems and dont get a long and i only mention it because i didnt see you guys interact with eachother last night.Believe it or not some people at newcastle claimed you punched richard in the stomach, now i dont buy this ( you know what the internets like, and some people from newcastle lack brains lol )

Every thing cool with you two? >>

Geez - nobody hit anybody, we all get along fine, REALLY. :)

Ya know, me and Robin were slamming into each other once on stage and people wrote that we "got in a fight" - things aren't always what they seem :P People shouldn't assume the worst.

bumblefoot came out the hall about 6pm with a plate with some cakes on it down at the bottom doors, as he came out he said "this is a gift from guns n roses" and held out his pass, i dont think many people knew who he was as not many people bothered, i never took a cake as im fat enough:D i noticed he is very small, im only 5ft8 and he seemed to be a good few inches smaller than me

my mrs got ill before gnr came on and almost passed out, i kept asking her if she wanted to move back but she said she`d be ok, she only lasted for 2 songs and had to be lifted out, we were about 3 rows from the front and none of the fuckers infront of her would help or let her out so i started screaming at them and grabing peoples heads and pulling them like fuck.

id like to thank the guy who grabed her leg and helped me lift her out, and a big fuck you to the fuckers that wouldnt let her pass :fuckyou:

my night wasnt the same after i had to leave the front and find her as we had to stay back as she was ill and our view wasnt great with the people infront

thats the 4th time iv seen gnr, 1st time in 92 at gateshead and twice at mylton keyens in 93 and id say this is the best iv heard axl sound rock3

EVERY audience is the "best audience in the world",...it's standard concert banter

(great review of the gig though!)

Nice review. Best night of my life! Simple as that! I was standing next to a cool guy (maybe 17) who new all the words to better too! We were rockin like motherfuckers!

Dude... you're implying that was me right? :P

What a show! What a fuckin' show! I started off in the 2nd row and when the Towers of London were playing the lead singer grabbed my hand! :D Bullet For My Valentine were shite. When the lights went down for the Guns to come on stage the place went insane! I was jumpin' like a motherfucker! My highlights were when Axl stood on the piano and when he had to stop the show after It's So Easy because we were too fuckin' insane! I got covered in confetti during Paradise City! Izzy Fuckin' Stradlin aswell! rock3

I am dead serious when I say Robin Finck is more than a match for Slash. That guy is simply brilliant. His solos were all very well recieved by the crowd and he got the biggest cheer during the band introductions. Also during the Beautiful solo people were shouting ''Slash who?''. The whole band were loved by the best crowd I've ever been in. The crowd loved Richard too, that guy is class.

Lucky, if it wasn't for the bastards at the front as well, I'd have a really good picture of Axl!

It annoyed me knowing that everyone at the front was blaming the people next to them which it most likely wasn't. Everyone was pushing to get to the front, the way I see it is if people waited a little while, they'd probably get to the front easily.

'I was standing next to a long haired ginger guy with a bandana and a baseball cap and he was word perfect too'

Haha I dunno but u might mean me. I was the guy who turned round to you and said something along the lines of ' It's good to see someone else who knows the words' just after Better had finished. Nice to see the show went so well. I had to leave during Ron's Don't Cry solo to catch the train back to Perth which was a pain in the arse but I saw the whole thing at Download so I guess I can't complain.

It's always funny hearing about Axl showing up late but it's bloody annoying when it happens to you.
