Message from Merck and Axl

It's been a long time since I've read a statement that reeked so much of condescension and disdain for the fans. The problem with their litany of excuses is that Axl has a long record of missing shows for no reason and the fire marshals in this town don't have a history of screwing around with visiting bands, or else we'd have heard about it by now.

They didn't explain how it is possible that fans discussing the rollingstone article or the harley ad at HTGTH were spreading "chaos." That may be because their argument is utterly untenable and just a fig leaf of lies to cover their blatant censorship.

I'll buy CD when it is released, but I'm not going to waste my time driving to Iowa to see them live. The contemptuous attitude that prevails among these people is no longer overcome by the quality of the music. In short, they're really not worth my time and money anymore. This is what happens when you let you audience know that you don't give a shit. You're left with making up lies to cover up why you couldn't even sell half the tickets for a show. Good luck guys, I'll see you next year in Branson.

Agreed.

Through all the shit over the years and the constant laughter we've endured as GN'R fans by skeptical "outsiders," any other band would be incredibly grateful to still find themselves with such an adamant fanbase. The fact that there is only one original member left in the band only adds to the wonder of GN'R - can you imagine ANY other '80s/'90s band sparking so much discussion years on?

And I didn't mind their cancellations and silence before, because hey, it was GN'R. But now I'm starting, for the first time ever, to feel like I don't even WANT to support this band anymore. They have shown such disdain for the Internet fans and made huge generalizations about the type of people "sitting in front of their computers." Axl himself has dissed the Internet numerous times, which I can understand, but to collectively label the Internet users as "pests" (as per Del James' article) or for Merck to try to give us a tongue-lashing for discussing a cancellation, is simply weak.

They're taking us for granted.

If we all stopped posting tomorrow - everyone, on every GN'R forum - they'd realize quick just how vital the Internet fanbase has been for this band.

What promotion have they had so far for the album?

None.

It's the Internet fanbase that's promoting the band with Internet postings, YouTube (fanmade clips and video/song uploads), etc., etc., etc.

Nice way to alienate the fans, Merck.

My question is, How are you any less of a fan if you're not going to the shows? Before you start telling people to "reconnect to reality," perhaps you'd better realize that people have responsibilities: families, jobs, financial issues, etc. We can't, at our leisure, drop everything and travel over vast terrain to make it to a GN'R show to sit for two hours waiting for them to show up. They won't even play in my state because last time they did there was a massive riot and Axl got into legal trouble. And what about fans in other portions of the world where GN'R has NEVER played?

In my humble opinion, they need to hire a new publicist who is appreciative of the vast fanbase. Other bands are highly grateful of the Internet users and do all types of special things for them. In my opinion we're spat upon more than any other band-fans and that's a damn shame, because NO true Guns N' Roses fan deserves the type of treatment they've been dishing out for the past number of years.

I thought their new website was - FINALLY - a step in the right direction, but that died quick after they promised us "exclusive video" to help get return visitors and then completely ditched it without a "Sorry" or any type of explanation for why it was never posted.

One of the best posts I've ever read on this forum. You my friend have read my mind like Kreskin!! Applause!!!!!

I don't agree with any of this. You people are really reading WAY too much into things... and that's exactly what these statements from the GNR camp have addressed. Do you honestly think the internet fan base is all that huge? What, there might be 50,000 registered users on GNR forums around the world? What about the other 30,000,000 GNR fans who aren't on a forum?

The problem is, some of you people create a reality in your head taking in all of the shit that you read on the internet from proclaimed GNR 'know-it-alls', you create false hopes and dreams for yourselves and do nothing but set yourself up for dissapointment. When that happens, you blame the band?! You blame Merck... Axl... etc.?!

I think you all gulity of that should take a step back and reanalyze the situation. Hell, there may not even be a GNR today. But, we had a very successful European tour... 'leaks' to keep us all satisfied... the circus act and costumes from 2002 sent back to Ringling Bros. and a true rock n' roll band on stage... countless promises from band members, Merck and Axl himself saying this indeed is the year... okay... a somewhat questionable marketing strategy... and GOOD sales in the United States for the tour so far.

Remember, Portland only holds 6000. If they sold 3500, that's better than 50%. Most of the concerts I've been too lately have all been less than half capacity in large arenas... most notably NIN. So if GNR is filling half or more of their arenas, that's about on par or better than any other band out there... and that's w/o a single or album and very little promotion.

Although I have been seeing GNR commercials on ESPN this past week promoting the Baltimore show. I assume they're locally advertising as shows approach certain markets.

As for the 'grown adults/jobs in the morning/kids to see out the door' violin, I suggest you shove it up your ass. I'm in that group, and if I'm worried about being up in the morning for work or seeing the kids to school after seeing my favorite band ONE NIGHT OUT OF THE FUCKING YEAR, it's about time I follow Barbara Streisand or go to Shania Twain concerts so I'm in bed at a decent time. Give me a break people, take your skirts off.

Anyway, you all really need to take their advice and disconnect from the internet and reconnect with the real world. They're not dissing you for being an online fan, but they're telling you to LIVE YOUR LIVES and don't concern yourselves so much with a rock band. Things will happen when they happen... no need to over-analyize, twist and blow things out of proportion. There are more important things in life.

For example, if you're a US citizen, DID YOU VOTE LAST NIGHT? Or were you hitting your refresh key all day long on here?

Case closed. Everyone stop your whining, those who are sound ridiculous. If you take offense to anything Merck or Axl say, you really need help. I suggest you find the real world or find a new hobby and stop trolling a GNR fan forum.

Says the guy with 1,205 posts.....

I think you´re reading as much into this as the next guy but from another point of view. And since this is a forum you are welcome to do so but please get off that high horse.

Axl and Merck arent saying "live your lives", they´re saying "do as we say, trust us, we love you". But they are not adressing the issues so they´re not really saying anything and therefor people are upset not because they have no lives but because GN´R is a part of the lives they live. You should know what I mean since your post count is so high.

Awww... did Merck and Uncle Axl ruffle your panties too? Here's an idea, how bout you suck a dick:) As for my posts, what, two or three a day? I'm actually a big fan of Guns N' Roses. Isn't this a GNR forum? Everyone has their online poison... some fantasy football... baseball or basketball... some politics... mine's being a fan of GNR and, well, a little porn :P Merck's comments (and Del's) are targeted at about 100 or so online users and so called 'fans' who do nothing but what I described above. If you or those morons don't understand that, it's just a testament to how caught up you all are in your imaginary worlds.

Well this could be true if the real world you claim to know so much about really was as simple as black and white. I mentioned your post ammounts because you talked about internet and forums being somewhat equal to not living your life. I don´t feel the need to bash other people for their opinions like you seem to do, I just don´t like when people go and act all high and mighty and claim to know how other people live their lives because that´s just stupid and/or childish. Also, because someone does not act like a fan according to your defintion of how fan should act doesnt really mean anything since we all like music and artists in different ways and for different reasons. We all appreciate stuff differently and we will all react on different topics which is what makes a forum great - diversity you know. There really is no wrong or right here. So if you don´t like the topic in a thread just stay out of it, there is really no need for name calling or asking people to go "suck a dick", just stay out of threads you don´t like. It´s as simple as that.

I think it´s great that so many people react against what Merck (and Axl) is trying to do when it comes to cencorship on OUR forums. This is the internet and as you said it´s only music we´re talking about, we should be able to do so freely without "higher powers" coming down on us and deleting/locking threads and calling us "no show go´ers", "internet geeks", "liars" or whatever childish thing they have thrown out at us. This is a forum, you have to expect different opinions and as long as we stay in line of the rules of the site (the ones we read before signing up) everything should be all good.

So to answer your question, no Axl and Merck did not get my "panties in a bunch" (nice sexist comment by the way...) but there really isn´t more interesting issues to discuss right now, at least not when it comes to GNR.

I normally do not respond on HTGTH but a number of your posts have been brought to my attention today and I feel it is right to take the time to dispel the negative speculation through a statement of facts:

1. The show in Portland was cancelled last night because the fire marshall made it impossible for us to believe we could do our show without putting at risk the safety of the fans and the band. They made it clear that they intended to harrass our fans, crew and the band through enforcing rules and regulations that are 200 years old to an extent that has not been applied to other artists and that we believed would make the gig a potential time bomb that would explode. Our Production Manager Chris Gratton is a seasoned pro who has worked with everyone from Korn to R Kelley and has terrific relationships with Fire Marshalls and authorities all over the world. This is the first time he has ever come to us and said this is a dangerous situation and these people intend to use their authority in a negative way against our fans, our band and our crew and I need you to do something about it.

The cancellation had nothing to do with pyro or ticket sales. Putting our fans, band and crew first cost $200,000 last night so we did not make the decision without great thought and care and it was made in consultation with our agents and our promoter both of whom lost money as a result and both of whom supported our decision 100% as they too could see that the authorities were more than overzealous in their approach. For all of you to be speculating without any knowledge or credible information that the responsibility for this is Axl's or the band's is nonsense. This band has performed more than 50 shows this year without incident and had every intention of performing last night. They did not perform because we - the professionals around the band - stopped them as we did not feel it was safe for them or for the fans. We take our responsibility to the band seriously and we take our responsibility to the fans seriously. Now if you want to vent your spleens about this do it to the people responsible ie the fire marshalls. We named them for a reason. They are the reason why the Cumberland County Civic Center did not rock last night.

2. I see a number of people flaming Jarmo and the moderators for removing posts at our request. I understand that you feel that we are using our influence to censor you. We are not. If someone wants to express their opinion or critique the band and its performances, recordings, actions etc that does not bother us but when you spread lies and disinformation about everything from ticket sales to release dates to how Pollstar calculate their chart we will use our relationship with Jarmo to shut you down because you cause chaos and confusion and you try to take something good and turn it into something ugly. When GN'R gets on stage every night for two and a half hours it is a positive force. The thousands of fans who are there every night lose themselves and have a great time. That is what rock n' roll is all about but unfortunately the 300 of you that aren't even at the gigs spread a negativity that does not reflect the reality at all as evidenced by the original thread on the Meadowlands show. We were there. We saw 11,000 fans having a great time. We had a great time. For the people in the room it was a great night but it wasn't to be for those of you at home sitting around your computers.

Jarmo is your greatest ally and he has a proximity to us that is to your benefit. No one else in the online community has it. He has credible information for you directly from the source. We are not looking for any negative favours. It is not how the band has ever operated. It is not how Axl operates and it is not how I operate.

3. Ticket sales.

Guns N' Roses have sold almost 200,000 tickets already for this run and we still have 7 weeks to go. We have sold almost 50,000 tickets in the New York area alone this year between Hammerstein Ballroom, the Meadowlands and Madison Square Garden on the back of one interview with Ed Trunk and before the album has come out. Most bands do not go to Portland, Maine because it is what the music business calls a "soft market" but we had a lot of letters from fans in the area and we were determined to play there regardless of whether it was "only" 3500 people. We are doing something positive in a negative world. If you are with us fantastic. If you want to live your live in an adverse way stay at home.

4. This is from Axl:

I would like to apologise to all of the fans in Maine for the show not happening last night. It was important for us to play there and it is a shame that what should have been a great night for all of us was not possible due to the actions of two people. I agree with and ultimately take responsibility for the end decision not to jeopardise the safety of the fans, the crews, the bands and myself as a result of the methods of these particularly draconian authorities. We are not trying to get away or get out of anything or pull a fast one by combining ticket sales as has been speculated. There are reasons that I have not spoken more about Montreal and Philadelphia that have been extremely complicated and are not legally resolved behind the scenes to this day and could have possibly jeopardized the future of Guns N' Roses.

We have chosen to take the public heat for these events in order to have another shot at the future today with a new album.

The professionals around me felt that Portland was a potentially explosive situation that could have had a somewhat similar result based on the behaviour of the two aforementioned fire marshals (it's not my 1st barbeque!) had the fans been given entry to the building and the show started. In respect of these opinions , our fans, the people of Portland, and the bands scheduled to play with us that night, unfortunately the only sensible decision was not to take that chance. We hope to find another way to play for you in the future. Thanks for even trying to see us. It sincerely is much more than appreciated.

He pretty much said fuck you to Madison in that statement. Merck is a prick

Actually, I don't see it that way.

Merck basically confirmed he will continue to censor htgth - and, honestly, this news can only drive more traffic to our site.

Afterall, I would bet the large majority of GNR fans - even the most diehard ones - want to read news that's uncensored and - even more importantly - be able to discuss it with other fans, whether it's the Harley Davidson commercial or a canceled show. So, thanks Merck! Your publicity/promo check will be in the mail. :D

It's good that GN'R finally show some will to communicate. For once I actually believe that this was not Axls fault. They could off course have gone along with the show, but knowing how certain officials and security people can be, it could have been a mess. I'd rather miss a show than get a chair smashed down my neck.

But once again it seems the brilliant minds in GN'R has missed the big and important picture. They're surprised at all the negativity? We all know the real reason for the increasing dissent in all GN'R related issues. The mysterious, legendary fucking album! It's not the tour, Robins beard or Axls girlfriends that draw people to these boards, it's the never ending CD spiral. Once again they've promised us this thing. End of the year they say. Now we're at soon to be mid-november. No date, no update, no indication, no fucking nothing. Oh, I forgot, we got this:

We have chosen to take the public heat for these events in order to have another shot at the future today with a new album.

Now what on earth is this supposed to be? It certainly does not sound like a guy about to release an album. It's basically a rewrite of what we've heard in 99,00,01,02,04,05 and countless times in 06.

I must say, they're real smart about writing a 3000 word piece on why nothing is their fault, and off course diss the fanbase a little, what the fuck have we been doing for them lately? Naturally, this only happens when their ass is once again on the line and they're desperately trying to limit any negative exposure. But still they expect us to believe this as an act of "caring" for the fans, along with the increasing censorship of our opinions. They actually dare to claim that is in our interest as well. Censoring bullshit rumors and bashing posts? I'm with ya. Not allowing legitamate articles to be discussed? That's pure and utter bullshit. What are we? Children?

Now this is all good, we're becoming used to this route. You've made your point, and I as a fan naturally appreciate being informed, no matter how vague and irrelevant the information may be. But what about that album guys? The one you've promised us this year? Is it still happening, or what? If you want to create some positive vibes among the fans, adressing that issue would go a long way. I don't need a release date, just tell me something. What's the plan? Is there a plan? Has it been postponed? If so, please tell me, I can wait, but I would sure like to know how long that wait is going to be.

As of now you got the whole GN'R community expecting a release this year. Now if this does not happen, and on top of that we don't get a reason why, then I'll promise you with the negativity created by the cancellation in mind, YOU'VE AIN'T SEEN NOTHING YET!

No kidding.

Like mentioned before, let em keep fuckin with us until the SMART majority of us finally say "Fuck this and fuck you" and just walk away from it. I can see "Where are they now" coming real soon. I don't expect Axl to ever resurface again, and I expect the remaining members to get good gigs.

I agree, a simple " the cd will STILL be out this year" or, even better, a release date would chill out alot of people.

If it doesn't come out this year, you can sure bet there will be one hell of a backlash within the GnR community. I'm sure we'd get a press release with the reasons why it isn't out- and you can bet your ass it'll be "due to reasons beyond our control"-or something similar. Now, how much truth that PR would have to it is debatable.

As far as this minor setback goes, it's cool that they decided to give us their version of the truth. I believe the truth falls somewhere in the middle.

I would really like to know though, where did all these fans from Portland,Maine send their request letters for GnR to play? Merck said that's why they decided to play there in the first place. I find that one a little hard to swallow. I'm sure i could get a couple thousand sigs for GnR to play Peoria,IL- just tell me where to send it to :)

*kisses the wall of mygnrforum.com*

I am so glad to have this place. A true gnr fan has a mind of their own.

"It is our opinion that they are going out of their way to target and single out GUNS N' ROSES and the band's loyal fans"

Yeah that's right, the fire marshals have a grudge against GNR. That REALLY sounds plausible.

Re: Matt13's post.

As for the 'grown adults/jobs in the morning/kids to see out the door' violin, I suggest you shove it up your ass.

Poetic and intelligent. I'm touched by your maturity.

Wow, nice. So, we're supposed to reconnect to reality, but not enough to take into consideration the fact that if we abandon our everyday responsibilities we may be fired or disowned? Yep, real nice outlook on life. I like the "take your skirts off" comment, too. Real non-sexist and mature.

Maybe you didn't read all of my post, such as the fact that they're not playing in my state because, oh, I dunno, last time they did Axl caused a mass riot by not showing up at all and had a legal battle on his hands afterwards? So yes, until they're somewhere where it is REALISTIC for me to see them play, I WILL be at my computer, because I have no other option. If it were up to me I'd go to every single show they play, but that's not the "real world," is it? Neither is driving over twelve hours to see a show (five or six hours both ways).

Excuse me. Are you posting here? Then you're using the forum, too, and the same logic would apply for you. You can't say the only people who need to reconnect are those who have become disappointed and disillusioned with the state of things. If there are more important things in life, then why do you spend so much time attacking people with opposing viewpoints? And before you say you aren't attacking - calling people "idiots," "morons," "girls," "pansies," and all the other insults you've thrown about ARE indeed attacks. No attacks were made in this thread - at all - until your presence became known.

I don't know about anyone else, but I barely used ANY forums yesterday. What about you?

And whether or not someone voted has little to do with whether they have a "connection" to the real life or not. Some people choose not to vote for many reasons, and likewise some people choose to vote. If you don't vote it doesn't mean you're lazy or posting on the Internet too much.

Case closed.

Sorry bud, it's a discussion board. Not a dictatorship. Until you open Matt13.com: The Official Forum, everyone has a right to speak their minds.

For someone waving the patriotic banner ("Did YOU VOTE?!"), it seems you're not too keen on American values such as freedom of speech.

Awww... did Merck and Uncle Axl ruffle your panties too? Here's an idea, how bout you suck a dick:)

How about you grow up and learn the importance of intelligent DEBATE versus immature crudity and baseless attacks on those with opposing viewpoints?

Since you brought up politics, it's rather interesting, since the first thing I thought of when I read your post was: "Close-minded conservative American."

You're collectively categorizing everyone who feels hesitant right now as "haters" and other such labels. That is not the case. I love Guns N' Roses, too. But I don't blindly follow them and I don't tell people that if they don't see things MY way then there is no other option available. You're simply intolerant.

As for my posts, what, two or three a day? I'm actually a big fan of Guns N' Roses. Isn't this a GNR forum?

Yes, it is. And for you to call people who don't share your viewpoint the names you used in your previous post is a disgrace. Shame on you.

HTGTH is a disgrace ever since they banned me with the reason being "Too far."

All I did was post a interview that I didn't even make.

And it didn't say anything negative about Axl & crew, it was just another side.

I don't know...

but

Merck did make a bad choice for choosing Jarmo & the Gangbangers over the nice, kind people over here. (don't bann me)

yeah..... matt just got his ass handed to him by about 10 people, you got nothing left to insult matty.

No, don't worry, he'll come back with more lame and infantile insults. He's already done it in this thread. He'll use a condescending attitude, place himself on a pedestal and try to insinuate once again that his opinion is more valuable than anyone else's.

Discussion boards should be for intelligent debate between people who can respect each other's viewpoints. I respect Matt13's outlook on GN'R, but when he doesn't share the same respect for others, that upsets me.

Let me make it clear: I don't honestly care what he says about me, but he went off on a tangent attacking other people in this thread. I think it was totally uncalled for and he should apologize.

Maybe then we can continue CIVIL discussion rather than lame name-calling.

If I see him make another joke implying that a person with an opposing opinion is a girl I may have to regurgitate my food.
