They know us hardcore fans knew this phone clip & evader's mix and that we thought it was The General.

We may have made Monsters turn into The General because of our confusion

Yes and no. I mean, the orchestral intro played before the concerts included bits that we now know belonged to two different songs, as some can be found in The General and others in Monsters. For all we knew then, the intro seemed to be sourced from the same song, and the band itself confirmed that the most used pre-show intro was The General, so our ""confusion"" was certainly legit. How were we supposed to know that the intro was using bits composed by Beltrami for two different songs?

But yes, if The General was released alone, without Monsters, it would have been so surprising not hearing the most famous orchestral part, the one from the phone leak/Evader's reconstruction.

That said, I don't think Axl decided to pair them because the fanbase thought Monsters was The General. It's more a case of what Bach said: this song is supposed to go lyrically with this other, etc. The songs came out of the same songwriting sessions, they share a certain common ground musically and Axl might have purposely written the lyrics of one in consequence of the other, with the intention of having them back to back as a "mini-opera" or something like that.

EDIT: I just wanted to add that it would be very interesting to know if @Mindray11 remembers anything about the "real" The General, as @Blackstar asked a few posts earlier. Perhaps they were played back to back that night as well.

So if it wasn't for this place....you would of probably been accusing the postie on Friday of thievery 🤨

Not sure, because I didn't get a shipping confirmation email either. I got one when Hardskool was shipped last year. I guess that, if I didn't know what was going on, I would have just written an email to the UK store asking for info.

I see no dates on the site for the Vinyl anymore...I've already got an order (never had a delay email STILL - did you guys all get one??) And dont wish to place another to see if the new date appears when you order fresh?

I ordered from the UK store and never got any email to announce the delay. Checked my spam folder and everything, just nothing.

Although I'm not one to easily jump to conclusions, I would think that this is not up for debate.

    Exactly. Especially because:

    1.  We know for sure Marco cited 4 songs outside of the released material on Chinese:  Leave Me Alone, The General, Thyme, and Seven

    2.  He remembers working on the track Monsters but not that it was called Monsters, which means it was called something else prior.  We already know what Thyme and The General sound like, which leaves just Leave Me Alone and Seven as candidates

    3.  Leave Me Alone is confirmed by Axl to be Soul Monster

    4.  "Monsters" has both the words "soul" and "monster" in its lyrics and fits the description of Axl's own description of Soul Monster's bridge

It would really make not much sense that Monsters is Seven and not Leave Me Alone/Soul Monster.

Marco Beltrami was kind enough to answer me a second time, can't believe he's so kind and took the time, what a great guy! Sadly he doesn't remember Monsters former name. He does remember a song being quite long but unsure if it was The General or another one. But if it was, it's not The General we have, as apparently there was a longer song he worked on (but he's unsure whether that long song was The General back then, maybe it's Seven or another one we haven't heard).

Just to be clear, he did listen to the leaks, I wanted to make sure he understood and could compare with what he remembers, and what we have has been modified from when he worked on those, so I guess it's hard for him to properly remember specific former names. But he does recognize those two songs & his work, and they weren't a single song back then (just like we have a hard time understanding how they could form a single song, as it is). The instrumental part isn't meant to form a continuity between this version of The General, and this version of Monsters, both instrumental were specific creations of his. Each 8 songs he's worked on/arranged had a specific arrangement meant for a particular song.

So it almost confirms for me that Monsters is indeed Soul Monster. And 100% confirms that those "The General" and "Monsters" we have are different songs.

I hope this clarifies things for everyone, now I can only hope Axl will someday clarify more things for us, and 100% confirm this is Soul Monster.

Can't wait for December 8th. Considering the credits things stating "The General and Monsters" as a single song, not everyone agreeing it's Slash & Duff on both songs, we might be in for more surprises! In "worst case scenario", we'll have a better mix/audio quality.

I can't add more reactions for today so I can't like your post, but thank you for contacting Beltrami and sharing the info!

I love Me & My Elvis, but assuming it's really not Soul Monster, I have my doubts it was actually finished.

Why? The song was fully fleshed out in 2000 and basically just missing a vocal track. If Axl has recorded vocals completely unheard before like The General / Monsters, it's possible that he also laid vocal tracks for other songs that were basically complete as far as the music went (Oklahoma could be another one, for example).

  7. Dummy. I really wish for a finished version of Dummy, my fave instrumental from the Village leaks. There were rumors about it being Cuban Skies, no idea based on what (perhaps the guy on the Steve Hoffman forum mentioning Cuban Skies having an acoustic intro?). Whatever, I just wish for a finished version of that. A completed Me & My Elvis would be amazing too.

  8. Wow. I'm really really loving Monsters. It has a sort of David Bowie feel and we can see Evader really nailed multiple bits of it. Amazing job  I'm a bit underwhelmed by The General, but going to listen soon again.

The songs sound like they are really supposed to come one after the other, like a ""mini-suite"" (for lack of a better word). Now the question is: is the 7" going to include just The General or will they squeeze in Monsters too?

What about this fake backside foto of CD or CD II?  Maybe someone here still has it?

That back cover started to float around in 2007 and it always intrigued me because, while it was generally thought to be fake, when the actual album came out we saw the choice of colors and fonts was quite close to the genuine artwork. Could totally be a coincidence, of course.

I talked about that cover in this thread from many years ago, but the imageshack link to that image is obviously dead:

That said, I'm 100% sure that the back cover from 2007 didn't include Perhaps. If The World was listed just as "If", that I remember for sure.

Regarding whether or not that tracklist screenshot was shared (including Perhaps) before 2019, I honestly don't remember.

  10. @D4NNY Of course I believe you, no need to post the screen. My point is that many people got results even with Soul Monster or Oklahoma or other titles, but this never happened when I tried. The only time it worked for me was when Perhaps was released, so maybe there's a common thread with The General starting to show up today on my side. We'll see in a few days I guess. Fingers crossed.
