Was watching a few vids from Detroit on youtube and this one popped up on shuffle.. I tried to give it a shot and it is still so bad..

The riff is so boring.. If you can call it a riff.. The dubbed it screams sound awful.. The fact that he just sings the same verse 3 times almost doesn't qualify it as a song.. The industrial slow part is abysmal.. That part should have been 100% re-written..

The only bright spot is the melody of the verse I guess and I don't hate the lyrics.. I got some enjoyment out of the hand gesture he made while saying "Pussy full of maggots" as well..

Just a perplexing attempt at a comeback song...

There’s actually 2 different verses. I wonder if they used that 2nd verse the second time through if it would break it up a bit, or does that kind of kill the vibe they were going for?

wonder if anyone knows what this means.  On Spotify below the song ABSURD is says "2021 Guns N' Roses, under exclusive license to Geffen Records"

    ChiDem says "2008 Geffen Recods"

AFD Super Deluxe says "2018 UMG Recordings, Inc." and "A Geffen Records Release: This Compilation 2018 UMG Recordings, Inc."

The Spaghetti Incident says "1993 Geffen Records"

Wonder what that means on who has control over the music and future releases.  Did GNR become its own label under Geffen?  Anyone with industry knowledge know what this means, if anything

Geffen is under the UMG umbrella. They are essentially one in the same. Nothing too strange there

Licensed is interesting. At some point Axl/GNR did start to fund their own recording sessions after UMG stopped (which those other CD songs were possibly worked on). Some type of deal had to be struck for that to happen. Then you get into whether GNR is/was given another advance for a Slash/Duff album as they are still under that contract.

Interesting to ponder, but too convoluted to guess upon without seeing the contracts

I will bet anything GNR has a say in the prices, I would really love to know for sure, as said it is messed up not only for the fans who paid a stupid amount for a pit ticket to see it as a fraction of the cost, but as I predicted they are going to try and oversell the pits to try and make up for a loss in revenue (because they know people will buy a pit ticket at a cheap price if they are unsure of going) so the pits are going to be overcrowded and it is going to be a shitty concert experience for those who shelled out hundreds of dollars on their pit when it seems the Pits in the previous tour there was alot of room to move around in it

LN sets the price. They adjust prices in real time according to demand. Of course they start high and try and cash in on early adopters. They will still make a profit on these shows cumulatively as they are the promoters for the entire tour

Yes, just an idea, based on contracts I've seen recently.

I'm in this industry (no insider).  Tours are worth more than albums these days and a LOT of guarantees come with a certain exchange of media appearances.

Rose likely said no to doing the media circuit as always, but could have very feasibly agreed to a 'new' song, knowing he had Silkworms up his sleeve.

If he agreed to release/play songs as part of the Live Nation deal, it’s very possible that it may only be these two songs that see the light of day

Especially if the label didn’t put any $ towards Slash/Duff going in to refresh the songs. That would explain a lot

Where have you got this theory that he owes the label a song? Isn't that just an idea you came up with to make your theory complete? It's circular logic.

The label certainly can’t collect since they already own everything that was recorded in those sessions.

If anything is evident, it’s that Axl controls what gets released outside of compilations

Does anyone seriously expect AFD2 or UYI3? It’s not happening. They’re out of their prime. CD fans will find this to be the potential holy grail of course, but I promise you these 3 are not going to write another AFD in their 50’s and 60’s. Few artists replicate their prime this late. The fact that Guns took an artistic risk is awesome- they still have some creative juices flowing in them.

To be fair, the risk was Chinese Democracy and that’s where these songs originated from. I will say choosing this song in itself to be their first statement is something as well.

These people aren’t living hand to mouth on the sunset strip any more. They aren’t dealing with new found fame and the perils that come with it. They’ve gone through divorces/breakups and have little to add that hasn’t been said

Axl typically writes from his experiences. What experiences has he had recently that are relatable? If we’re going hear anything that’s actually new, that will be the hurdle

  7. They absolutely should limit lithos. This isn’t anything new for other artists/tours

They should also make them available on their online tour store for a limited time and just print them to order

If anything, they should be a little peeved that people are flipping them to a point where fans are getting gouged on their merch and more for them that they aren’t seeing the profit

What’s extremely surprising about this track is:-

The regular posters on here who I’d put money on HATING this….but actually liking it?!

The regular posters on here who I’d put money on LIKING this….but actually hating it?!

Venturing out to other websites who are extremely scathing about stuff in general and finding a fairly even split of likes and dislikes of the track.

    ABSURD

It’s very Lou Reed. You’re going to feel something about it

Absurd is a very fitting title. Is there any other example of a song being officially released 20 years after it's been performed live?

Of all songs they could've picked, they choose Silkworms to start the (maybe?) next album promotion.

Almost everything is reworked, save Axl vocals that were done 20 years ago.

It's absurd indeed, but what surprises me the most is Axl may still believe in this material.

My only interest at this point is hearing The General.

I have zero faith in this line-up doing justice to the vault, they just can't cover anything from Chinese properly (even Axl apparently since he doesn't even

re-works his vocals for this studio version and I doubt Hard School will have a different treatment, I guess it's an admission he knows he lost part of his voice),

but at least we may hear something "new" that we don't already have.

I'm semi-curious of hearing the studio version of Hard School with Slash & Duff, but I already know it won't be as good as the original version.

I think part of the problem is that Slash & Duff rework stuff, but Axl doesn't, and it's a very, very weird mix of old Guns & nuGuns. Axl's CD voice fitted the sound of the CD line-up,

but with Slash & Duff, I expected Axl to rework his vocals and go for a more raspy approach (like the 2010 This I Love remix).

Anyway, I don't care about Absurd, but it's encouraging in the sense a new album could be released soon. I just hope The General will be in there, with State of Grace, Zodiac

    and Soul Monster.

And I hope we will get an alternate album with the original versions of those songs, I'd be much more interested in this than the cover version.

If he’s not redoing vocals, it’s not because he isn’t capable. Just look at Rock the Rock, Back in the Saddle, etc…He can get a take off need be. There have certainly been moments where he could have done so over the years. Singing that way for hours each night on tour is something different

There just isn’t much proof he’s done anything with these songs since the original sessions. Whether it’s because of artistic choice, recording budgets and label issues, or valuing his own personal time. Who knows the reason

  10. “I sense great vulnerability. A man-child crying out for love. An innocent orphan in the post-modern world.”

“I see a parasite. A sexually depraved miscreant who is seeking only to gratify his basest and most immediate urges.”

“His struggle is man’s struggle. He lifts my spirit.”

“He is a loathsome, offensive brute. Yet I can’t look away.”

    “He transcends time and space.”

    “He sickens me.”

    “I love it.”

    “Me too.”

You bring up an excellent point about them playing it safe.  My concern is as far as the mainstream audience goes, this is going to turn them right off. There is nothing safe about this. There is also nothing that says GnR is back.  They have left it too long between releases to justify such a change in direction. They almost needed to play it somewhat safe to entice a new/old/uninterested audience in. This feels more like a fuck you to the died hards than a genuine attempt to release new material.

I don’t think people are going to stadium shows to hear new material if it were safe or not. They are there to hear old songs

Maybe GNR doesn’t care if it resonates with them. Maybe they don’t want to play it safe

Radio is dead dude. No one cares about it anymore. Streaming/youtube is where it's at. And GNR have 20 million monthly Spotify listeners, those who want to know will know it's out.

    Yep…

At the end of the day, this all makes it hopeful that we will hear the rest of those CD era songs (especially the ones that weren’t leaked) in a reworked fashion.

Silkworms/Absurd is an extremely polarizing song. If they wanted to get any type of reaction good or bad, it’s certainly a way to go

Those sorts of decisions would have to be left to @downzy - personally I’d love to see us do another run of shirts at some point, but since that all relates to the finances that’s up to him.

Sure. Just throwing it out there. I don’t think there’s any upfront cost with those services. They just take their cost of the shirt that’s sold and whatever the profit is goes to the creator.

Most YouTube creators use them to help with revenue. I’m sure there’s enough creativity around here to get a few ideas that doesn’t infringe on licensing if that’s the direction Downzy wants to go

We actually have done shirts in the past - I was the one doing the shipping on those. It was a fun idea and we had a few options with forum inside jokes on the back. However, the number of shirts that had to be shipped internationally and the cost of international shipping, combined with the time and labor of having to fill out customs declarations, rent a PO Box (As I wasn’t comfortable shipping stuff out with my personal address due to the number of nut jobs around in GN’R land) - it was quite a lot of hassle for a very small revenue.

I’d look into just doing something with a service like tee-spring if that’s your concern. They’ll handle international shipping and all of that. Your profit margin may be less than doing a big print run and handling yourselves, but the headache won’t be there
