Exactly. And if someone says they can't find GNR's new single, they'll say it hasn't been released yet because they can't find it either. They're not thinking it's a trick to find out if there actually is such a song. They just believe the customer asking about a new single.

And no one cares about how their algorithm works. Why would they? It's only an issue for us GNR nerds/lunatics.

This. Customer Support has no info on songs sitting in the database. Nor do they understand the inner workings of the site. Anything technical that’s an issue from the consumer end gets passed along as a work ticket. They are there to handle payment issues, how to work the app, and pass along anything that’s not working correctly

From the credits on streaming platforms and on the auto-generated videos on youtube it seems that UMG owns the recordings on the Chinese Democracy album. It also probably owns many of the recorded versions of unreleased songs, while, like you say, the more recent recorded versions of these songs were partially or fully funded by GN'R. I suppose this would be the case if, for example, the recording of the vocals and the drums was funded by the label and the recording of the other instruments was funded by GN'R. But let's say that they changed the old vocal track a bit, like adding another chorus (cut and paste from the old recording) or changed the mix of it a bit, or edited the drum track, and they funded that new mix, that would count as a different recording, right?

My guess is that they bought the masters from those sessions at some point and now just own it outright

That doesn’t however get GNR out of their record contract and UMG still has the right to release any recording. So they just license it over

UMG is not out, but it seems GN'R now have a different deal with them - likely that GN'R record music on their own label and UMG is the distributor.

No, it's because Geffen is releasing it and distributing it. But the live recording is owned by GN'R, hence by their own label.

I believe UMG stopped financing the recordings years ago. GNR finished parts of these songs on their own dime and therefore own part or even all of the masters. They also own their live recordings

UMG however probably still owns the right to release any recording as they are probably still under their record contract. That’s where this licensing/distribution deal comes in. Prob a ton of billable hours to figure this all out

Normally when a label stops funding an artist, they shelve songs/albums and hold that artist hostage under their contract

It makes no sense the AFD L&L is on “sale” for $399 but they still thought to price the UYI box set at $499. Like, how do you even justify it? The AFD cabinet itself is dope. And that set comes with a hell of a lot more than UYI. UYI doesn’t even come with a thumb drive containing digital versions of the songs, does it?

I’ll wait till the super deluxe is $200. People who got burned paying a grand for the L&L box clearly haven’t learned their lesson.

They price it high knowing that it will come down eventually. Unless this stuff is being made to order and will only be available through the merch site

Well, regarding Just Another Sunday, like I said earlier, GN'R probably don't even own it (although it's possible that rehearsals of it existed, since it had been considered for UYI for a moment there). As for Ain't Goin' Down, yeah, I don't know why they didn't include it, even though, unlike many people, I didn't expect it to be released as a promo single for many reasons.

Re: the live shows: as I said, it's different strokes for different folks. A lot of other people would want as many shows as possible, so the more the better.

I never thought they’d ever release any of those demos with that drum machine anyways. That stuff was never meant to be heard. If they even have a 1st generation copy of it

If anything, maybe some alternate takes. However with how those sessions were rushed when they brought in Sorum, maybe there just isn’t much to scrap

Is there any reason why this isn’t showing for preorder on Amazon? Just thinking about potential vouchers I can use.l to minimise the damage the 12lp set would cost?! 🤣

Not sure. It’s possible that it won’t be distributed like Hard Skool wasnt

GNR10 still works as a discount code in the store if anyone is jumping in early in this

I don't understand how this band is not managed by the top guys in the industry. You know any pro worth their salt would love to add GnR to their resumé, and make a load of cash to boot.

That’s not how management works. They had Irving Azoff. He’s the top guy. Fact is that this is how Axl wants the band to operate. No one is going to tell or manage him differently

  9. Niven thinks pretty highly of himself. He’s obviously upset that Doug crossed him, when in reality he probably would have ran things similarly if things moved forward. Everyone involved in that circle were there to squeeze every last penny out of the situation before someone died or the band imploded. There was no long term vision outside of who to tie yourself with to survive. For Doug, that was Axl. The health and well being of everyone there came last

The album artwork thing is hilarious. He’s probably looking to get one over on everyone. If he were representing me, I’d worry that he was willing to do that to his artists as well

“The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There’s also a negative side” - Hunter S Thompson

  10. The song meanders too much for my liking. It doesn’t breathe.  It’s almost as if it needs a few breaks/pauses or something different rhythmically/dynamically to help piece together some of its transitions. Maybe it would have helped accentuate some of those sections. The versions we’ve heard doesn’t seem to grab you the entire way through. There’s probably a great song in there somewhere though

I also feel like the original version of Catcher is a very similar song but better

So Gibsons aren't really used much by bands anymore? I have little/no knowledge of guitars and the more 'technical' side of music.

Are they simply too expensive now for most bands, or are they seen more as classics than functioning musical equipment?

Oh they’re still used if they can be afforded. There’s just a stigma that they’re now doctor and lawyer guitars. Especially custom shop,  59 reissues, etc…

They’re just expensive and there’s certainly been a movement with gigging musicians not to bring out expensive guitars to shows and even record. There’s tons of great quality instruments in the sub 1000 range compared to 30 yrs ago that do the job just as well. $ is always tight and people look for it to be spent elsewhere

    I think that's basically it!

I understand the 'why' I don't understand the 'how' though, in terms of how people can afford it! But it's not aimed at poor old rock fans I guess!

It’s aimed more at Gibson collectors and guitar aficionados. Gibson are high priced instruments, so someone dropping 250 or 1000 on this product is a drop in a bucket for people who frequently buy $3k-$10k guitars and collect. They aren’t even typically guitars people gig with any more. Slash just signs a bunch of copies as part of the deal. Gibson then prices it

When it comes to buying stuff that’s signed, I stay away from things that are priced significantly more than what a typical autograph is charged or worth. Normally Slash charges around a $100 premium for his signed stuff in his store. That’s also about where the market is.

Is there $150 or $900 worth of items in those packages? That’s up to the buyer

I’d be interested to buy an unsigned copy if it becomes available. Personally, I have enough Slash signed stuff and a few guitars. This would be overkill and I feel they are asking a bit much compared to what’s being offered

What, how do I have a choice on the train? You want me to bring my vinyl record player with me so I can get the mega full quality awesome audio experience everytime I listen to a song? Haha

Yes, but my point was unless I'm an unemployed loser with nothing else to do that's simply not realistic to do that all the time. Sitting in your home listening to music through hi-fi speakers is only possible if you aren't busy or don't have other things to do. While yes it IS better audio, hearing the same song through bluetooth compressed MP3 still gives me almost the same amount of enjoyment, when I do that I don't feel like "oh man this sounds so bad", I just enjoy the song. It is the way most people consume music these days because it is not a hassle and you can do it anywhere.

Technology improved a lot the last 20 years, like 15 years ago I used to listen to downloaded songs on my MP3 player with 64 kb/s quality, THAT was bad. Now it's really good if you have a streaming service that has CD quality of 320 kb/s. That quality is really good enough, whatever these elitist "oh but it's compressed" snobs say.

You realize people can listen in multiple different ways? Streaming is great for on the go. I stream fairly often as well. You do you. No one is telling you not to. People also make time to do many things. Sitting down and listening to a record can be one of them

We’re talking about the use of an original master for remasters as it pertains to the Universal fire in this thread. Typically at that level, that involves audiophile talk as that’s really where anyone will hear any discernible difference between using an original master as a source or a copy
